Spatial And Temporal Model Validation: Representing Landscape Properties And Processes Across Scales, C. S. Renschler Jul 2006

Spatial And Temporal Model Validation: Representing Landscape Properties And Processes Across Scales, C. S. Renschler

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Continuous modeling of landscape processes and their validation requires representingenvironmental properties for model input and output across scales. A combination of a scaling theory, aGeospatial Project Management Tool (GeoProMT), and a GIS-based environmental modeling interface, allows interdisciplinary collaborators to efficiently handle and communicate the scaling (or transformation)of geospatial information of properties and processes across scales. This integrated approach of theory, project management tool, and modeling interface can be applied to any environmental model and softwaredevelopment. The integrated modeling is based on the Geospatial Interface for the Water Erosion PredictionProject (GeoWEPP) that enables soil and water conservationists to assess soil erosion taking into …

Landscape Design And Agricultural Land-Use Allocation Using Pareto-Based Multi-Objective Differential Evolution, Jeroen C. J. Groot, Walter A. H. Rossing, André Jellema, Martin Van Ittersum Jul 2006

Landscape Design And Agricultural Land-Use Allocation Using Pareto-Based Multi-Objective Differential Evolution, Jeroen C. J. Groot, Walter A. H. Rossing, André Jellema, Martin Van Ittersum

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Intensively managed agricultural areas in North-Western Europe are undergoing a shift from solely production oriented use to provision of multiple services and functions. Design of multifunctional agricultural landscapes can be supported by exploration of the potential to effectively combine economic performance, landscape identity, nature conservation and environmental quality. The Landscape IMAGES methodology enables spatially explicit exploration of options by multi-objective optimization, for multifunctional agriculture in landscapes at a scale of a few km². The framework has been developed to support stakeholder discussions and informed decision making. For simultaneous optimization of multiple objectives the evolutionary algorithm of Differential Evolution is employed. …

Multi-Crop Plant Growth Modeling From Field To Watershed For Water Quality And Management, G. S. Mcmaster, James C. Ascough Ii, D. A. Edmunds, L. E. Wagner, F. A. Fox Jul 2006

Multi-Crop Plant Growth Modeling From Field To Watershed For Water Quality And Management, G. S. Mcmaster, James C. Ascough Ii, D. A. Edmunds, L. E. Wagner, F. A. Fox

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Agricultural models and decision support systems (DSS) for assessing water quality and management are increasingly being applied to diverse geographic regions at different scales. This requires models that can simulate many different common and alternative crops. However, very few plant growth models are available that “easily” can simulate the growth of many crops, and these models lack the scientific detail incorporated into crop-specific models. One option available is a suite of plant growth models based on the original plant growth model used in the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model. Various versions of the original EPIC plant growth model have …

Upscaling Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics From Sites To Regions With Uncertainty Measures: The Gems Experience, Shuguang Liu, Z. Li, Jinxun Liu, Thomas R. Loveland, M. Chen, Larry L. Tieszen Jul 2006

Upscaling Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics From Sites To Regions With Uncertainty Measures: The Gems Experience, Shuguang Liu, Z. Li, Jinxun Liu, Thomas R. Loveland, M. Chen, Larry L. Tieszen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Upscaling the spatial and temporal changes of carbon stocks and fluxes from sites to regions is challenging owing to the spatial and temporal variances and covariance of driving variables and the uncertainties in both the model and the input data. Although various modeling approaches have been developed to facilitate the upscaling process, few deal with error transfer from model input to output, and error propagation in time and space. We develop the General Ensemble Biogeochemical Modeling System (GEMS) for upscaling carbon stocks and fluxes from sites to regions with measures of uncertainty. GEMS relies on site-scale biogeochemical models (e.g., the …

Modeling Soil-Water Dynamics For Diverse Environmental Needs, Pierre Martin, Rabi H. Mohtar, Pascal Clouvel, Erik Braudeau Jul 2006

Modeling Soil-Water Dynamics For Diverse Environmental Needs, Pierre Martin, Rabi H. Mohtar, Pascal Clouvel, Erik Braudeau

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Accurate representation of the top soil matrix with special attention to the scales present is important to the dynamics of water flow and fate of pollution at field, farm and watershed scales. It is also important from an agronomic stand point since agriculture still constitutes the main source of pollution at a time when many agronomic models still use empirical notions of soil hydraulic properties. The soil dynamics literature describes soil hydraulic properties independently from the soil-water medium hydro-structural dynamics. This leads to an empirical approach to represent and estimate soil hydro-structural properties such as shrinkage, water potential, field capacity, …
