Modsim: Decision Support System For Integrated River Basin Management, John W. Labadie Jul 2006

Modsim: Decision Support System For Integrated River Basin Management, John W. Labadie

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

MODSIM 8.0 is a generic river basin management decision support system for analysis of long term planning, medium term management, and short term operations on desktop computers operating under MS Windows 2000/XP. MODSIM is free from expensive licenses for proprietary software since all components are developed from native code or shareware under the MS .NET Framework. MODSIM includes a powerful, interactive graphical user interface for creating, locating and connecting river basin network components, as well as spreadsheet-style data editing in an object-oriented spatial data base management system. Flexible data import and export tools are included for interaction with external data …

Development Of An Integrated Decision Support System For Water Quality Control In The Upper Litani Basin, Lebanon, Hamed Assaf, Mark Saadeh Jul 2006

Development Of An Integrated Decision Support System For Water Quality Control In The Upper Litani Basin, Lebanon, Hamed Assaf, Mark Saadeh

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Compared to the limited water supply in the Middle East, Lebanon is perceived to be a water rich country. Yet, it faces a growing water supply problem due to many factors including increases in demand, inadequate investment in infrastructure, and deterioration of water quality. Being the foremost water resource in Lebanon, the Litani River is at the center of several major water supply and irrigation schemes. However, the river water quality is severely impacted by the current practice of releasing untreated sewage into its water body, specifically in its upper basin which is home to about half a million inhabitants. …

Free And Open Source Geospatial Tools For Environmental Modeling And Management, Ari Jolma, Daniel P. Ames, N. Horning, M. Neteler, Aaron Racicot, T. Sutton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Geospatial software tools (GIS) are used for creating, viewing, managing, analyzing, and utilizing geospatial data. Geospatial data can include socio-economic, environmental, geophysical, and technical data about the Earth and societal infrastructure and it is pivotal in environmental modeling and management (EMM). Desktop, web-based, and embedded geospatial tools and systems have become an essential part of EMM. Environmental simulation models often require pre- or post-processing of geospatial data, or they can be tightly linked to a GIS, using it as a graphical user interface (GUI). Many local, regional, national, and international efforts are underway to create geospatial data infrastructures and tools …

Water Balance Modelling In Bowen, Queensland, And The Ten Iterative Steps In Model Development And Evaluation, Wendy D. Welsh Jul 2006

Water Balance Modelling In Bowen, Queensland, And The Ten Iterative Steps In Model Development And Evaluation, Wendy D. Welsh

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The viability of irrigated horticulture in a coastal catchment near Bowen in Queensland, Australia, is dependent on groundwater. The summer-dominant rainfall is extremely variable, ranging from 255 to 2358 mm/year and there are no large surface water storages. A model was sought to improve understanding of the local hydrology and assist with management of the groundwater. The 220 km2 area is data-rich with 260 observation bores plus stream gauging, metering of irrigation bores and detailed land use mapping. A water balance model based on Darcy s Law, which describes laminar water flow through soils, and using only the historical data …
