Based on the directive from President George W. Bush to prepare the nation better for a possible smallpox attack, Florida enacted Operation Vaccinate Florida- Stage I (OVF I). Between February 10, 2003, and March 31, 2003, Florida vaccinated 4,434 individuals against smallpox. During this period a smallpox vaccine surveillance study was conducted in 18 counties in North Central Florida. The study was conducted via journal log, which participants completed daily by recording all symptoms, vaccination site stage development, and demographic information. The study included 350 vaccinees from Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Hamilton, Gilchrist, Lafayette, Levy, Flagler, Marion, …

Alcohol use is a leading risk factor in suicides, homicides and unintentional injuries (including motor vehicle crashes and drownings) among adolescents, and is associated with adolescent health risk behaviors such as cigarette smoking, illicit drug use, and risky sexual behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if family factors would predict alcohol-related problems as the study cohort transitioned into young adulthood, and to determine if early alcohol use remained a significant influence on the development of alcohol-related problems in young adulthood. Customer service is a measure of support and courtesy provided to individuals who patronize an organization, and is a factor vital to the success of any business. Programs that strive to meet critical needs of at risk populations, such as the Special Supplementation Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), may also benefit from assessment of client satisfaction. The purpose of the study was to examine factors related to customer satisfaction in Duval County Florida WIC clinics and identify potential barriers to participation through a two-year project initiated by the health department and the state university. Lack of reliable data about foreign-born groups creates gaps in demographic measurement methodology leading to a cycle of misinformed policy development. Haitian immigrants represent one of the largest foreign-born groups in Florida. Only limited information is available on the health care issues that they face. This paper describes the methodological design and strategies employed for the implementation of a study whose primary purpose was to identify and evaluate basic health care needs and barriers to health care access for the Haitian immigrant population of Miami, Florida. Be Headsmart® Seniors! -- The Effectiveness Of A Psychoeducational Fall And Consequential Injury Prevention Program

This study tested the utility of the Be HeadSmart® Seniors! fall prevention intervention, HeadSmartz, a Cranium Challenge, in the promotion of safety improvement behavior change. It employed a quasi-experimental two-group design. Of the 106 individuals included in this study, 64 received the intervention and 42 only received the safety brochure. The Cranium Challenge is an interactive, visual, and auditory program based upon the popular board game CraniumTM. This game stimulated various parts of the participant’s brain verbally, through trivia questions and word games, visually, or by humming, whistling, or playing charades. Menurut estimasi WHO, sekitar 50% dari 12 juta penduduk dunia meninggal akibat penyakit jantung dan pembuluh darah. Faktor prognosis pasien PJK dapat diubah dan dikendalikan, dan memungkinkan untuk mencegah kematian akibat PJK. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui faktor prognosis yang berhubungan dengan terjadinya kematian pasien PJK di PJN Harapan Kita Tahun 2004, menggunakan data sekunder (data rekam medik pasien). Variabel-variabel yang diteliti meliputi variabel independen (jaminan pembayaran, asal daerah/kawasan, penyakit penyerta hipertensi, diabetes melitus, dislipidemia dan riwayat PJK sebelumnya) dan variabel kovariat (umur, jenis kelamin, pendidikan dan pekerjaan). Di Indonesia, bayi berat badan rendah (BBLR) merupakan salah satu faktor utama yang berpengaruh terhadap kematian perinatal dan neonatal. Di Propinsi Jawa Barat dilaporkan 6,4% bayi lahir dengan berat badan kurang dari 2,5 Kg. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengetahui berbagai faktor kesehatan reproduksi yang berhubungan dengan kejadian. Penelitian yang menggunakan disain kasus kontrol ini dengan menggunakan formulir kohort ibu hamil di Dinas Kesehatan Kota Sukabumi. Kasus adalah bayi dengan BBLR yang lahir pada tahun 2005 sampai Juni 2006, sedangkan kontrol adalah bayi bukan BBLR yang lahir pada periode yang sama. Pengobatan diare pada balita di Puskesmas Kabupaten Sumedang dilaksanakan di Poli KIA yang sehari-harinya ditangani oleh bidan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat kepatuhan bidan dan faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan kepatuhan bidan dalam penggunaan obat secara rasional pada balita diare akut non spesifik. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah cross-sectional dengan jumlah sampel 109 bidan yang berasal dari 18 puskesmas yang dipilih secara random. Pengukuran kepatuhan dilakukan dengan pengamatan terhadap resep yang ditulis oleh bidan untuk balita penderita diare akut non spesifik. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan tingkat kepatuhan bidan adalah 69,7%. Hasil analisis regresi logistik ganda memperlihatkan bahwa faktor yang berhubungan …

Medication therapy is an important component of the comprehensive treatment plan designed to maintain or improve health. If patients do not take prescribed medications correctly or are non-adherent, less successful therapy occurs. Reasons given for noncompliance include cost, misunderstanding the therapy, side effects, forgetfulness, or a belief that the medication is not effective or necessary. This study had two goals, the first was to evaluate medication use while simultaneously assessing knowledge, compliance, tolerance, and perceived efficacy. Drug-related problems, if any, were also identified. The second goal was to develop methods to improve patient outcomes based upon identified problems. For eight …

Social Support Indicators That Influence Breastfeeding Decisions In Mothers Of North Florida

To examine whether a mother’s social support system influences decision to breastfeed, pregnant women and women who had children, from six north Florida counties, were asked to participate in this study. Women were recruited from local lactation support groups and agencies serving mothers and children. Participants were administered a 34-item questionnaire that asked about motivation, social support and intention. Mothers breastfed because they believed breast milk was healthier for the baby. These mothers identified the baby’s fathers as being most supportive, but felt they needed more support from the fathers. Interestingly, most women strongly agreed that whereas the support system …

This National Health Policy Forum meeting report reviews a technical session that took place on August 4, 2006. The invitation-only meeting was designed to discuss implementation issues related to the new Medicare drug benefit, with special consideration of state activities, problems, and concerns. This meeting followed similar ones sponsored by the Forum in 2004 and 2005 in which the state perspective was the primary focus of conversation. Participants, including current and former state Medicaid directors, other state officials and experts, federal officials, Medicare drug plan representatives, and beneficiary advocates, described their experiences during the implementation process and addressed continuing challenges. …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. In 2000, an estimated 10.5 million people had COPD, of which more than 7.2 million were from the under-age 65 employed population. The prevalence of COPD in the workforce population was substantial with 46.5% of current employment among adults having the disease. However, the cost burden in the employed population is unknown. We examined COPD prevalence and costs in a large employment-based population. Using claims data from 1999 to 2003, we estimated the cost associated with COPD-related hospitalizations, emergency department visits, outpatient services, …
