Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu Jan 2012

Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu

Francisco Soto Mas

Information on how health professionals perceive tobacco use as well as their attitudes toward tobacco control is scarce. This study assessed the attitudes and perceptions of public health students toward tobacco use and tobacco control, which constitutes a necessary first step in designing effective training strategies. Although the majority of respondents agreed that tobacco use constitutes a relevant public health problem, they did not perceive tobacco control to be a public health priority. Academic institutions may not be properly training public health students, and may therefore be missing the opportunity to advance tobacco control at the national and global levels.

Sea Grant International: Extending The Model Of Applied Research, Extension/Outreach To Foreign Countries, Matthew Wilburn King, Dosoo Jang, Jill Hepp, Janelle Bruce

Matthew Wilburn King PhD

NOAA Research’s Office of International Activities and the National Sea Grant Office are extending the Sea Grant model to other countries. The National Sea Grant College Program is a proven, effective model to engage universities and government agencies acting in partnership to promote research, education and outreach/extension related to marine issues. Through network contacts at 30 universities and research institutes and the NOAA National Sea Grant Office, individual Sea Grant programs stay connected to issues at a national level while being responsive to local level needs. Because the Sea Grant model is inherently flexible — both culturally and administratively — …

Dr. Muhammad Munir

This work elaborates the over-technical topic of stipulations in a Muslim marriage contract; explains the various types of stipulations benefiting women and men; explains how and to what extent classical Islamic law is incorporated into statutes of many Muslim states; describes case law of Indo-Pak subcontinent on stipulations based on the doctrine of stare decisis; surveys talaq al-tafwid in Pakistan to ascertain the extent of its practical application by the masses; and explore the role of nikah registrars, who are authorized by the government of Pakistan to solemnize nikah (marriage contract) throughout the country.

The Judicial System Of The East India Company: Precursor To The Present Pakistani Legal System, Muhammad Munir Dr. Dec 2005

The Judicial System Of The East India Company: Precursor To The Present Pakistani Legal System, Muhammad Munir Dr.

Dr. Muhammad Munir

The work discusses how the British East India Company came to the subcontinent for the purpose of trade in 1604 and how it slowly and gradually started interfering in the local justice system by acquiring revenue collection of 38 villages in 1717 near Calcutta. In 1765 the Company was granted revenue collection as well as customs of three provinces. The Company also acquired the administration of justice in the areas under its control and the role of Muslim qadis and judges was over. Company’s officials, who were traders rather than trained judges, were running the court system and the Privy …

Property Right And Tortious Wrong In Vincent V. Lake Erie, Gregory C. Keating Dec 2005

Property Right And Tortious Wrong In Vincent V. Lake Erie, Gregory C. Keating

Gregory C. Keating

This paper, prepared for a BePress symposium on Vincent, argues that Vincent is the incarnation of an important form of strict liability. In the dire necessity of the storm, Vincents property right to exclude yields to Lake Eries equal right to save its own ship, and justifies Lake Erie in using Vincents dock without Vincents permission. But Vincents property right yields only as far as it must for Lake Erie to save its ship. Lake Eries duty of reparation thus rests in part on the residual force …

An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp Dec 2005

An Evaluation Of Decision Tree And Survival Analysis Techniques For Business Failure Prediction, Adrian Gepp

Adrian Gepp

Accurate business failure prediction models would be extremely valuable to many industry sectors, particularly in financial investment and lending. The potential value of such models has been recently emphasised by the extremely costly failure of high profile businesses in both Australia and overseas, such as HIH (Australia) and Enron (USA). Consequently, there has been a significant increase in interest in business failure prediction, from both industry and academia. Statistical models attempt to predict the failure or success of a business based on publicly available information about that business (or its industry and the overall economy), such as accounting ratios from …

Stressed Liquid-Crystal Optical Phased Array For Fast Tip-Tilt Wavefront Correction, Bin Wang, Guoqiang Zhang, Anatoliy Glushchenko, John West, Philip Bos, Paul Mcmanamon

John L West

A liquid-crystal optical phased-array technology that uses stressed liquid crystals provides a new type of tip-tilt wavefront corrector. It demonstrates a very fast time response (10 kHz) and high beam-steering efficiency (similar to 91%). The new technology presented here will allow for a nonmechanical, high-speed correction with simple device construction.

Fabrication Of Various Curved Relief Structures Through Concave Surface Forming And Soft Replica Molding, Fang-Tzu Chuang

Fang-Tzu Chuang

In this case, our groups presented various optical structures through the presented method, involving concave surface forming and soft replica molding. The method of concave surface forming is mainly for the fabrication of concave surface. The method of soft replica molding is mainly for the fabrication of replica. Concave and convex relief structures, including circular curved relief structures, convex relief structures with platform structures on the top, refractive beam-shaping elements, these structures with dual curvatures and asymmetric structures, can be easily made through the presented method, respectively. All processes of manufacture are in several simple steps without multistep optical lithography …

La Influencia De Aristoteles En La Filosofía Novohispana, Virginia Aspe Dec 2005

La Influencia De Aristoteles En La Filosofía Novohispana, Virginia Aspe

Virginia Aspe Dra.

Multidecadal North Atlantic Climate Variability And Its Effect On North American Salmon Abundance, Alan Condron, Robert M. Deconto, Raymond S. Bradley, Frances Juanes Dec 2005

Multidecadal North Atlantic Climate Variability And Its Effect On North American Salmon Abundance, Alan Condron, Robert M. Deconto, Raymond S. Bradley, Frances Juanes

Robert M DeConto

Climate variability is now known to play a key role in the abundance of marine fisheries, and must be accounted for to implement sustainable management strategies. We show that North American Atlantic salmon abundance has fluctuated in parallel with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO); a basin-wide, low frequency climate mode producing cold-warm-cold sea surface temperatures over the last century. During the AMO warm (cool) phase salmon abundance is lower (higher). Changes in sea surface temperature associated with the AMO are most pronounced in the winter season near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, a known overwintering area for salmon and an …

Long Distance Effects And Strangeness In The Nucleon, John Donoghue, Barry R. Holstein, Tobias Huber, Andreas Ross Dec 2005

Long Distance Effects And Strangeness In The Nucleon, John Donoghue, Barry R. Holstein, Tobias Huber, Andreas Ross

John Donoghue

We discuss the calculation of the strange magnetic radius of the proton in chiral perturbation theory. In particular we investigate the low energy component of the loop integrals involving kaons. We separate the chiral calculation into a low energy part and a high energy component through use of a momentum space separation scale. This separation shows that most of the chiral calculation comes from high energies where the effective field theory treatment is not valid. The resulting low energy prediction is in better agreement with dispersive treatments. Finally, we briefly discuss magnetic moments and show how our techniques can help …

“Propuestas Universales De Redistribución Del Ingreso. Un Análisis Normativo.”, Cristian Pérez Muñoz Dec 2005

“Propuestas Universales De Redistribución Del Ingreso. Un Análisis Normativo.”, Cristian Pérez Muñoz

Cristian Pérez Muñoz

The idea of guarantying an unconditional and universal income to each member of the political community is rooted in Thomas Paine and Joseph Charlier writings, published some centuries ago. In the last decades, the debate on this topic has been renewed. Among the recent initiatives, the most spread ones have been the Universal Basic Income, mainly developed by Philippe Van Parijs, and the capital grants proposal elaborated by Bruce Ackerman and Anne Alstott. These two guaranteed income proposals present many coincidences and differences, both in the normative and factual area. This article contains a normative analysis of both proposals, mainly …

Inventions On Selecting Gui Elements, Umakant Mishra Dec 2005

Inventions On Selecting Gui Elements, Umakant Mishra

Umakant Mishra

Selecting an object or element is a fundamental operation in any graphic user interface. It is necessary to select an object before doing any operation (such as, dragging, copying, opening, deleting etc.) on that object. The GUI may provide features to select any single object or even multiple objects. The feature of selecting multiple objects can provides tremendous power to the GUI as the user can do complex operations on multiple objects in one go. However, the process of selection is not as simple as it appears to the user of a GUI. The internal logic of a selection mechanism …

Inventions On Displaying And Resizing Windows, Umakant Mishra

Umakant Mishra

Windows are used quite frequently in a GUI environment. The greatest advantage of using windows is that each window creates a virtual screen space. Hence, although the physical screen space is limited to a few inches, use of windows can create unlimited screen space to display innumerable items. The use of windows facilitates the user to open and interact with multiple programs or documents simultaneously in different windows. Sometimes a single program may also open multiple windows to display various items. The user can resize the windows and move their location time to time as desired. However, there are several …
