Maturation Requirements For Dendritic Cells In T Cell Stimulation Leading To Tolerance Versus Immunity, Helen O'Neill, Jonathan Tan Sep 2015

Maturation Requirements For Dendritic Cells In T Cell Stimulation Leading To Tolerance Versus Immunity, Helen O'Neill, Jonathan Tan

Jonathan Tan

The model that dendritic cell (DC) "maturation" describes the change from an immature, antigen-capturing cell to a mature, antigen-presenting cell is well-established. Classification of DCs in terms of function has been problematic previously. It is therefore proposed that mature and not immature DCs are responsible for antigen presentation and stimulation of T cells. Furthermore, DC antigen presentation to T cells can have two outcomes: tolerance or immunity. The particular outcomes appear to be determined by the activation state of the mature DC. DCs can be activated by a range of environmental stimuli or "danger signals". Here, the hypothesis is advanced …

The Development Of A Single Scale For Mapping Progress In Mathematical Competence, Ross Turner, Gayl O'Connor Mar 2015

The Development Of A Single Scale For Mapping Progress In Mathematical Competence, Ross Turner, Gayl O'Connor

Ross Turner

The authors’ intention is to develop a progress map that describes increasing mathematical competence. The main purpose of this chapter is to describe the means by which the research team has been able to use the data from a longitudinal testing program to build and refine a picture of growth in mathematical competence. In this chapter, conceptualisation of the underlying variable to be measured in developing a mathematical progress map is considered, and approaches to its development are discussed. The approach adopted is described and the results of the application of that methodology to the data generated through this research …

Market Power And Price Movements Over The Business Cycle, Bart Wilson, Stanley Reynolds Aug 2014

Market Power And Price Movements Over The Business Cycle, Bart Wilson, Stanley Reynolds

Bart J Wilson

This paper develops and tests implications of an oligopoly-pricing model. The model predicts that during a demand expansion, the short run competitive price is a pure strategy Nash equilibrium but in a recession, firms set prices above the competitive price. Thus, price markups over the competitive price are countercyclical. Prices set during a recession are more variable than prices set in expansions because firms employ mixed strategy pricing in recessions. The empirical analysis utilizes Hamilton's time series switching regime filter to test the predictions of the model. Fourteen out of fifteen industries have fluctuations consistent with this oligopoly-pricing model.

Verifiable Offers And The Relationship Between Auctions And Multilateral Negotiations, Bart Wilson, Charles Thomas Aug 2014

Verifiable Offers And The Relationship Between Auctions And Multilateral Negotiations, Bart Wilson, Charles Thomas

Bart J Wilson

We use the experimental method to compare second-price auctions with 'verifiable' multilateral negotiations in which the sole buyer can credibly reveal to sellers the best price offer he currently holds. Despite the two institutions' seeming equivalence, we find that prices are lower in verifiable multilateral negotiations than in second-price auctions. The difference occurs because low-cost sellers in negotiations often submit initial offers below the second-lowest cost. We also compare the two institutions to previously studied first-price auctions and multilateral negotiations with non-verifiable offers. Second-price auctions yield the highest prices, followed in order by verifiable negotiations, non-verifiable negotiations and first-price auctions.

Labour Intellectuals In Australia: Modes, Traditions, Generations, Transformations, Terry Irving, Sean Scalmer Jan 2014

Labour Intellectuals In Australia: Modes, Traditions, Generations, Transformations, Terry Irving, Sean Scalmer

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

The article begins with a discussion of labour intellectuals as knowledge producers in labour institutions, and of the labour public in which this distinctive kind of intellectual emerges. Next we construct a typology of the three modes of labour intellectual that were proclaimed and remade from the 1890s (the 'movement', the 'representational', and the 'revolutionary'), and identify the broad historical processes (certification, polarization, and contraction) of the labour public.

State Differences In Achievement Among Secondary School Students In Australia, Gary Marks, John Cresswell Sep 2012

State Differences In Achievement Among Secondary School Students In Australia, Gary Marks, John Cresswell

Dr John Cresswell

A number of recent national studies of student achievement in secondary school have reported differences between the Australian states and territories. State differences are often viewed as insubstantial or as simply reflecting sociodemographic factors, or differences between the states in the grades or ages of the students sampled. In this article, the authors show that state differences are larger than generally assumed and cannot be attributed to socioeconomic and demographic factors. Generally, student achievement in reading, mathematics and science are higher in New South Wales than the other states, once demographic and grade differences are taken into account. Of concern, …

Transition To Further Education: The First-Year Experience, Julie Mcmillan, Kylie Hillman

Kylie Hillman

Look at tertiary study in terms of academic failure and attrition, and research clearly identifies the first year of study at university or TAFE as the year of highest risk. Put otherwise, completion of the first year is 'more than half the battle' when it comes to the completion of a degree or diploma. Since that's the case, it's worth developing a fuller understanding of young people's experiences and perceptions of their first year of tertiary study, particularly to understand why people change their course of study, why they discontinue their studies and how they develop as lifelong learners, which …

Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu Jan 2012

Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu

Francisco Soto Mas

Information on how health professionals perceive tobacco use as well as their attitudes toward tobacco control is scarce. This study assessed the attitudes and perceptions of public health students toward tobacco use and tobacco control, which constitutes a necessary first step in designing effective training strategies. Although the majority of respondents agreed that tobacco use constitutes a relevant public health problem, they did not perceive tobacco control to be a public health priority. Academic institutions may not be properly training public health students, and may therefore be missing the opportunity to advance tobacco control at the national and global levels.

Creative Writing And An Overlooked Population, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Jan 2012

Creative Writing And An Overlooked Population, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

As a regional institution, our university's historic mission is to train area teachers who must operate under the auspices of the Kentucky Educational Reform Act, which mandates extensive writing portfolios i Grades 4,7, and 12. While these portfolios may include as much as 50% creative writing or work employing creative writing techniques, a recent survey of teachers responsible for guiding students revealed that not a single teacher had ever taken a course in creative writing pedagogy and only a handful had even had any formal training in creative writing. We suggested that this lack of teacher training was one reason …

Us-Based Indices Of Area-Level Deprivation: Results From Healthcare For Communities, Christine Eibner, Roland Sturm Dec 2010

Us-Based Indices Of Area-Level Deprivation: Results From Healthcare For Communities, Christine Eibner, Roland Sturm

Roland Sturm

In this analysis we create census-tract level indices of area deprivation for the US that parallel similar indices developed in Britain, and we determine whether these indices are related to physical and mental health outcomes. Data for the indices come from the 2000 Census Summary File Tapes and the 2001 Zip Code Business Patterns Files. These indices are then linked by census tract to cross-sectional data from the HealthCare for Communities (HCC) study, and equations are estimated using multi-level models with census-tract random effects. We find that area-level deprivation predicts poor mental and physical health outcomes, but different components of …

Leadership In Catholic Schools : Development Framework And Standards Of Practice, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson Apr 2010

Leadership In Catholic Schools : Development Framework And Standards Of Practice, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

This study emphasises the connections between the work of leaders and the core functions of schooling. It draws these connections in the context of the values and beliefs of the Catholic Church and the mission of Catholic schools in their communities. The Framework has been developed with two main purposes in mind. The first is to guide the professional learning and development of aspiring leaders and to encourage teachers to consider movement into leadership positions. The second is to unite Catholic schools around a vision of agreed leadership practices for leaders – 'the standards' – and to provide a foundation …

NOAA Research’s Office of International Activities and the National Sea Grant Office are extending the Sea Grant model to other countries. The National Sea Grant College Program is a proven, effective model to engage universities and government agencies acting in partnership to promote research, education and outreach/extension related to marine issues. Through network contacts at 30 universities and research institutes and the NOAA National Sea Grant Office, individual Sea Grant programs stay connected to issues at a national level while being responsive to local level needs. Because the Sea Grant model is inherently flexible — both culturally and administratively — …

The Judicial System Of The East India Company: Precursor To The Present Pakistani Legal System, Muhammad Munir Dr.

Dr. Muhammad Munir

The work discusses how the British East India Company came to the subcontinent for the purpose of trade in 1604 and how it slowly and gradually started interfering in the local justice system by acquiring revenue collection of 38 villages in 1717 near Calcutta. In 1765 the Company was granted revenue collection as well as customs of three provinces. The Company also acquired the administration of justice in the areas under its control and the role of Muslim qadis and judges was over. Company’s officials, who were traders rather than trained judges, were running the court system and the Privy …

Property Right And Tortious Wrong In Vincent V. Lake Erie, Gregory C. Keating Dec 2005

Property Right And Tortious Wrong In Vincent V. Lake Erie, Gregory C. Keating

Gregory C. Keating

This paper, prepared for a BePress symposium on Vincent, argues that Vincent is the incarnation of an important form of strict liability. In the dire necessity of the storm, Vincents property right to exclude yields to Lake Eries equal right to save its own ship, and justifies Lake Erie in using Vincents dock without Vincents permission. But Vincents property right yields only as far as it must for Lake Erie to save its ship. Lake Eries duty of reparation thus rests in part on the residual force …
