Judith E Pasek

A wide variety of exotic tree pests can readily be transported into the United States on untreated wooden pallets, crating, bracing, and other solid wood packing materials (SWPM). Recent introductions of forest pests associated with importation of SWPM demonstrate that current United States import regulations are inadequate to exclude such pests. Nearly all (97 percent) of the quarantine-significant tree pests found by port inspectors are associated with SWPM. In spite of current bark-free import requirements, about 9 percent of maritime shipments contain bark, which provides habitat for numerous organisms. A pest risk assessment was conducted for the SWPM pathway to …

Relationship Between Personality Hardiness And Critical Care Nurses' Perception Of Stress And Coping In The Critical Care Environment, Catherina Ivette Chang

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between critical care nurses' perception of stress, their ability to cope with stress, and the hardiness personality they possess while working in the critical care environment. A non-experimental, descriptive, correlational survey design was applied to a convenience sample of 50 registered nurses employed in the critical care units of a South Florida health care facility. The data collection methods included a demographic survey, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Health-Related Hardiness Scale, and the COPE inventory. The results of this study demonstrated that critical care nurses are able to cope effectively …

Lifelong Learning Goes To The Movies: Autobiographical Narratives As Media Production, Nod Miller

Adult Education Research Conference

A blockbuster of a paper (nominated for Best Foreign Contribution) in which the heroine describes a perilous path through the territory of narrative theory and text construction. She encounters the threshold guardians of writer’s block and self-doubt, wrestles with shapeshifters, tricksters and shadows, rallies after encounters with mentors and allies and returns to the ordinary world with the elixir of lifelong learning (or, at least, a completed conference paper).

The Role Of Death Qualification In Venirepersons' Evaluations Of Aggravating And Mitigating Circumstances In Capital Trials, Brooke M. Butler Jul 2000

The Role Of Death Qualification In Venirepersons' Evaluations Of Aggravating And Mitigating Circumstances In Capital Trials, Brooke M. Butler

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Death qualification is a part of voir dire that is unique to capital trials. Unlike all other litigation, capital jurors must affirm their willingness to impose both legal standards (either life in prison or the death penalty). Jurors who assert they are able to do so are deemed "death-qualified" and are eligible for capital jury service; jurors who assert that they are unable to do so are deemed "excludable" or "scrupled" and are barred from hearing a death penalty case. During the penalty phase in capital trials, death-qualified jurors weigh the aggravators (i.e., arguments for death) against the mitigators (i.e., …

Risk And Resilience Factors Linked To Problem Behavior Among Urban Culturally Diverse Adolescents, Stephanie L. Crosby Jul 2000

Risk And Resilience Factors Linked To Problem Behavior Among Urban Culturally Diverse Adolescents, Stephanie L. Crosby

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study examined several risk and resilience factors associated with sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and alcohol and drug use among 332 urban culturally diverse adolescents aged 12-16 years. In general different patterns of risk and resilience factors were found to predict the three problem behaviors. Delinquency was the only factor that was significantly linked to sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and substance use.

Discriminant analyses supported that delinquency was differentially associated with low problem vs. high problem urban adolescents. In addition when compared to the high problem urban youth the resilient youth tended to have higher academic competence and intact two …

Quality Of Life And Panic Disorder, Rebecca J. Wyatt Kinnander Jul 2000

Quality Of Life And Panic Disorder, Rebecca J. Wyatt Kinnander

Theses and Graduate Projects

Panic disorder has been associated with pervasive social and health consequences similar to or greater than those associated with major depression. Studies have been found that support findings concerning diminished quality of life for persons currently being treated, or shortly after treatment for anxiety disorders, but little is said in regards to quality of life (QOL) in years that follow treatment. This research project attempts to ascertain if there is a difference between the findings of previous studies with this more recent examination of QOL in panic disorder patients. Furthermore, implications for practice show use of quality of life assessment …

The Power Of One: The Effect Of One Athlete's Behavior On A Sport, Jennifer L. Field

Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of whether or not the effects of one athlete's behavior are broad enough to be felt throughout a sport. The researcher focused on three athletes whose behavior was thought to have left a permanent scar on the three sports involved. The athletes were: (1) Pete Rose, who was part of the Philadelphia Phillies 1980 World Series team and later became the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, who was accused of betting on baseball games, (2) Mike Tyson, former undisputed heavy weight champion of the world, who was convicted of rape and bit the ear of opponent …

This qualitative evaluation of the intergenerational moral learning related to the activist work of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) constitutes a critical re-membering of growing up in a WCTU home and community.
