Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Final Rule To List The Topeka Shiner As Endangered

Endangered Species Bulletin

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines the Topeka shiner (Notropis Topeka) to be an endangered species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). The Topeka shiner is a small fish presently known from small tributary streams in the Kansas and Cottonwood river basins in Kansas; the Missouri, Grand, Lamine, Chariton, and Des Moines river basins in Missouri; the North Raccoon and Rock river basins in Iowa; the James, Big Sioux and Vermillion river watersheds in South Dakota; and, the Rock and Big Sioux river watersheds in …

Observations Of The Eastern Maine Coastal Current And Its Offshore Extensions In 1994, Neal Pettigrew, David Townsend, Huijie Xue, J. P. Wallinga, P. J. Brickley, R. D. Hetland

Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Cold surface temperatures, reflecting Scotian Shelf origins and local tidal mixing, serve as a tracer of the Eastern Maine Coastal Current and its offshore extensions, which appear episodically as cold plumes erupting from the eastern Maine shelf. A cold water plume emanating from the Eastern Maine Coastal Current in May 1994 was investigated using advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) imagery, shipboard surveys of physical and biochemical properties, and satellite-tracked drifters. Evidence is presented that suggests that some of the plume waters were entrained within the cyclonic circulation over Jordan Basin, while the major portion participated in an anticyclonic eddy …

Molecularly Bonded Inherently Conductive Polymers On Substrates And Shaped Articles Thereof, Shalaby W. Shalaby, Richard V. Gregory, Jacqueline M. Allan

Clemson Patents

Organic inherently conductive polymers, such as those based on polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene, are formed in-situ onto polymeric surfaces that are chemically activated to bond ionically the conductive polymers to the substrates. The polymeric substrate is preferably a preshaped or preformed thermoplastic film, fabric, or tube, although other forms of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers can be used as the substrates for pretreatment using, most preferably, phosphonylation-based processes followed by exposure to an oxidatively polymerizable compound capable of forming an electrically conductive polymer. The resultant conductive surface imparts unique properties to the substrates and allows their use in antistatic clothing, surface …

Long-Wavelength Collective Excitations In A Two-Dimensional Spin-Polarized Electron Gas: A Phenomenological Theory, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn Dec 1998

Long-Wavelength Collective Excitations In A Two-Dimensional Spin-Polarized Electron Gas: A Phenomenological Theory, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn

Publications

The dispersion relations of the collective excitations induced in a 2D spin-polarized electron gas are derived within the framework of the Landau-Silin theory applied to a two-component Fermi liquid. The quasiparticle interaction is described by spin-dependent coefficients, which are parametric functions of the initial degree of polarization. The motion of the low-energy excitations satisfies a semiclassical transport equation solved consistently with the Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic field produced by spin and charge fluctuations. The long-wavelength limit of the self-sustained oscillations is analyzed as a function of the initial degree of polarization of the system, preset by a dc magnetic …

On The Basic Representation Theorem For Convex Domination Of Measures, J. Elton, Theodore P. Hill Dec 1998

On The Basic Representation Theorem For Convex Domination Of Measures, J. Elton, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

A direct, constructive proof is given for the basic representation theorem for convex domination of measures. The proof is given in the finitistic case (purely atomic measures with a finite number of atoms), and a simple argument is then given to extend this result to the general case, including both probability measures and finite Borel measures on infinite-dimensional spaces. The infinite-dimensional case follows quickly from the finite-dimensional case with the use of the approximation property.
