An Investigation Of Kindergarten, First And Second Grade Teachers' Implementation Of Portfolios, Jayne E. Nick
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to examine a kindergarten, first and second grade teachers' familiarity and use of portfolios as well as their concerns about portfolio use. This information is important because it may affect how portfolios are implemented in these classrooms and the degree of success that teachers report in portfolio use. Information about teacher concerns and teacher familiarity and use of portfolios was collected through the use of a survey developed by Johns and VanLeirsburg (1991) and adapted for this study. The survey focused on familiarity and use of portfolios, contents of portfolios, and teacher concerns about …

An Investigation Of Nebraska Art Teachers' Perceptions And Usage Of Internet Technology., Donalyn M. Heise
Student Work
In order to prepare students to be life long learners in a rapidly changing global and technological society, educators need to promote the use of appropriate technology to support quality learning. Art students, as well as all of today's students, need to be effective communicators, creative problem solvers, and be able to access and manage information in an electronic world. Although Nebraska is already a national leader in telecommunications and telecomputing, the extent to which technology is used and will be used in specific disciplines is as yet unclear. An important first step in supporting the future use of Internet …

Job Competencies, Career Paths, And Educational Backgrounds Of "Fortune" 500 Training Directors, Rachael A. Shultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the job competencies, career paths, and educational backgrounds of training directors and also compared the responses of male and female training directors in an attempt to identify possible sources of justification for reported male/female salary differences. Data for the study were gathered through the use of two questionnaires. The first was based on a part of the American Society for Training and Development's (ASTD) 1987-1989 Competency and Standards Study. Additionally, a demographic questionnaire dealing with biographical, educational, and professional characteristics was self-developed. Both were mailed to training directors in all Fortune 500 companies. Major findings include: (1) …

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker
Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the characteristic of chaos theory called sensitive dependence on initial conditions or butterfly effect in schools and school systems. The purpose of the study was to develop insight into school systems by determining if categories or factors of behaviors or decisions have been observed in school systems which are sensitive to initial conditions and are therefore likely to produce exponential effects. A modified critical incident technique was used to collect data from experienced principals in three moderate sized regions in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Participants reported incidents that were sensitive to initial conditions during interviews. The …

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of the activities, processes, and structures used to link a teacher evaluation program to professional growth and motivation. A total of 52 teachers in the Johnson City School System, who were scheduled for evaluation during the 1994-95 school year, were selected by both random and purposeful sampling techniques to participate. Data were collected through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Principals of the nine schools involved also participated in the naturalistic inquiry component of the study. Interactive Television In The Classroom: A Comparison Of Student Math Achievement Among Three Instructional Settings, Sherri L. Hodge-Hardin
Interactive Television In The Classroom: A Comparison Of Student Math Achievement Among Three Instructional Settings, Sherri L. Hodge-Hardin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A dramatic expansion of distance learning through the use of interactive television (ITV) is allowing colleges and universities to offer students potentially unlimited access to educational and training opportunities. While the expanding information age beckons us to consider mechanisms for using communication technologies for the benefit of meeting the needs of learners in a variety of locations, the question may be raised--Is ITV an effective medium of instruction? This study examined the effectiveness of using an interactive television system to broadcast developmental algebra classes at East Tennessee State University. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were …

Teachers Attitudes Toward Students Learning At Higher Levels: A Challenge To Kera?, Kimberly Rager
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
"Teachers' Attitudes Toward Students Learning at High Levels: A Challenge to KERA?" discusses the underlying premise of the Kentucky Education Reform Act that states that all children can learn at high levels. Literature research was conducted from other states as well as from the state of Kentucky. The author distributed surveys in fourteen different schools in four different counties in the state of Kentucky. To clear up some confusion in the minds of educators as well as other citizens, the simple statement should be reworded to state that all children can learn at their highest possible level.

[T]he Negro needs neither segregated schools nor mixed schools. What he needs is Education. What he must remember is that there is no magic, either in mixed schools or in segregated schools. A mixed school with poor and unsympathetic teachers, with hostile public opinion, and no teaching of truth concerning black folk, is bad. A segregated school with ignorant placeholders, inadequate equipment, poor salaries, and wretched housing, is equally bad. Other things being equal, the mixed school is the broader, more natural basis for the education of all youth. It gives wider contacts; it inspires greater self-confidence; and suppresses the …

The Core Values Of Vincentian Education, Louise Sullivan D.C.
Vincentian Heritage Journal
The educational endeavors of Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac, often overshadowed by their other works, were an integral part of their service to the poor. Vincent de Paul is sometimes seen as an anti-intellectual, but he made sure he received the best theological education possible. He was also a successful teacher. He taught school during his student days at Toulouse and while he was pastor of Clichy, and he was primarily engaged with the Gondi family as a tutor for the eldest son. He knew that the religious neglect of the poor and the clergy’s ignorance were inextricably …
