A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coulomb Collisions And Wave-Particle Interactions In Space Plasma At High Latitudes, Imad Ahmad Barghouthi May 1994

A Monte Carlo Simulation Of Coulomb Collisions And Wave-Particle Interactions In Space Plasma At High Latitudes, Imad Ahmad Barghouthi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Four studies were considered to simulate the ion behavior in the auroral region and the polar wind.

In study I, a Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the behavior of O+ ions that are E x B-drifting through a background of neutral O, with the effect of O+(Coulomb) self-collisions included. Wide ranges of the ion-to-neutral density ratio ni / nn and electrostatic field E were considered in order to investigate the change of ion behavior with respect to the solar cycle and altitude. For low altitudes and/or solar minimum (ni / …

High School And University Student Test Performance In The Study Of Human Growth And Development: A Concurrent Enrollment Study, Harold O. Monson May 1994

High School And University Student Test Performance In The Study Of Human Growth And Development: A Concurrent Enrollment Study, Harold O. Monson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Concurrent enrollment of high school students in college classes is becoming more common but it has not been clear if high school students can learn the material as well as college students. This study examined high-school and college students' learning by exposing them to the same text, a similar lesson plan, and the same test questions, while controlling for demographic, attitudinal, and experiential variables. Two questions were addressed: (a) Was there a practical difference between high school and college students in their ability to learn the material; and (b) was there a difference in the way they learned the material? …

Design And Evaluation Of Stepped Spillways For High Dams, Jeffrey Scott Rau May 1994

Design And Evaluation Of Stepped Spillways For High Dams, Jeffrey Scott Rau

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this research was to investigate the hydraulic performance of stepped spillways. A thorough investigation was made of all printed material on stepped spillways, and a summary of this material is presented in the text. Data from experiments in the laboratory were used to develop a design procedure for stepped spillways and hydraulic jump stilling basins. The experimental study was conducted at Utah State University - Utah Water Research Laboratory in Logan, Utah. Four models were built and tested in the laboratory under various flowrates.

The crest of the model spillway was constructed in the shape of a …

Heat Transfer In Vertical Concentric Cylinders In A High Level Nuclear Waste Repository, Yao Min Lei Jan 1994

Heat Transfer In Vertical Concentric Cylinders In A High Level Nuclear Waste Repository, Yao Min Lei

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Modeling free convection heat transfer in a cylindrical annular enclosure is still an active area of research and an important problem to be addressed in the high level nuclear waste repository. The waste containers are vertically emplaced in the borehole 300 meters below ground. and in a horizontal grid of 30 x 8 meters apart. The borehole will be capped after the container emplacement and the container is surrounded by an enclosed vertically concentric air-gap inside the borehole. The expected initial heat generated is 4.74 kW per container and it degenerates exponentially with time. A computer simulation model is used …

Thermal Considerations In The Drift Due To The Emplacement Of A Horizontal High Level Nuclear Waste Container, Akshay Bhargava Jan 1994

Thermal Considerations In The Drift Due To The Emplacement Of A Horizontal High Level Nuclear Waste Container, Akshay Bhargava

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project is investigating the feasibility of locating a high level radioactive nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The design of waste containers to be used for the long term storage of the high level nuclear waste has progressed from the borehole model indicated in the original site characterization plan to drift emplaced multi-placed containers. The removal of decay heat is important in the first 1000 years as Zircaloy degradation temperature of 350{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C is not to be exceeded; In this study a two dimensional finite element thermal analysis has been completed for two scenarios for …

Quantization Of Multiresolution Transform Coefficients For High Compression Of Digital Images, Blaine L Hagstrom Jan 1994

Quantization Of Multiresolution Transform Coefficients For High Compression Of Digital Images, Blaine L Hagstrom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

New developments in transformation theory have fueled interest in methods that employ transformation in the computation process. Theory from various disciplines including electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer science have benefited from these advances. The greatest impact in computer science by these methods is in the area of image compression. Digital image compression is currently of high interest in computer science. The growing demand for images in computers has grown faster than the technology and thus solutions are sought. This work deals with the problem of quantization of resultant coefficients of the transforms in compression methods that perform transformation of …
