Two-Insert Assembly For High-Throughput Vibration-Based Fatigue Testing, Emma German Apr 2020

Two-Insert Assembly For High-Throughput Vibration-Based Fatigue Testing, Emma German

Student Research Symposium

This research analyzes an improved high-throughput method for vibration-based fatigue testing. This method builds off previous research by Bruns and Zearley, where a carrier plate assembly containing a test specimen vibrates to failure. In this work, an aluminum carrier plate was designed to load multiple specimens instead of one. This revised design allows multiple specimens to be fatigued simultaneously, reducing total testing time. The assembly designs were simulated in ANSYS to perform parametric modal analysis. The initial three-insert design was chosen such that cyclic stress was concentrated on the specimens rather than the carrier plate, extending the life of the …

Sex Difference In Cardiorespiratory Stress From High-Intensity Interval Exercise, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Mauricio Martinez, Joaquin Gonzales, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

High-intensity interval exercise is time efficient and has similar cardiorespiratory health benefits as moderate-intensity continuous exercise. However, the prescription of high-intensity exercise may differ between men and women due to sex differences in cardiovascular function. PURPOSE: Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist for absolute and relative oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) when exercise was performed at a percentage of maximal cycling work rate measured in watts (Wmax). METHODS: We recruited 8 active college-aged participants (5 men, 3 women). Participants completed an incremental maximal exercise test on a …

It Is Hot In The Sun: Antarctic Mosses Have High Temperature Optima For Photosynthesis Despite Cold Climate, Alicia V. Perera-Castro, Melinda J. Waterman, Johanna Turnbull, Michael B. Ashcroft, E Mckinley, Jennifer R. Watling, Jessica E. Bramley-Alves, Angelica Casanova-Katny, Gustavo E. Zuniga, Jaume Flexas, Sharon A. Robinson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

The terrestrial flora of Antarctica’s frozen continent is restricted to sparse ice-free areas and dominated by lichens and bryophytes. These plants frequently battle sub-zero temperatures, extreme winds and reduced water availability; all influencing their ability to survive and grow. Antarctic mosses, however, can have canopy temperatures well above air temperature. At midday, canopy temperatures can exceed 15°C, depending on moss turf water content. In this study, the optimum temperature of photosynthesis was determined for six Antarctic moss species: Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Ceratodon purpureus, Chorisodontium aciphyllum, Polytrichastrum alpinum, Sanionia uncinata, and Schistidium antarctici collected from King George Island (maritime Antarctica) and/or the …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The main objective of this study was to develop a mix design adjustment method for Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) that would maintain appropriate workability while improving hardened concrete performance. A literature review was conducted to examine existing methods for adjusting mix designs to account for fiber introduction. It was found that while increasing fine aggregate and cement paste content can make up for lost workability with the addition of fibers, no rational mix design adjustment method is available. Reference mix designs from the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nebraska Department of Transportation were used, and this study focused on …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Flexible and free-standing electrode materials are prerequisite and key components for next-generation flexible energy storage and conversion devices. However, it is still a chanllenge to fabricate these materials from a continuous, straightforward, and facile method. Herein, we report a flexible composite film with silicon oxides decorated on few-walled carbon nanotubes, which can be continuously fabricated and directly drawn from the hot zone of the reactor. The composite film can be readily used for electrochemical lithium ion storage with high and reversible specific capacity, good rate capability, and excellent cycling performance. These exceptional characteristics make it very promising for flexible energy …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

High-strength square concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) slender beam-columns with a circular internal steel tube subjected to eccentric loads may undergo interaction local-global buckling. No computational studies on the interaction local-global buckling of slender square CFDST beam-columns have been reported and their behavior has not been fully understood. This paper describes a mathematical model for the simulation of the interaction local-global buckling behavior of square high-strength CFDST slender beam-columns under axial compression in combination with uniaxial bending. The mathematical model is formulated by the fiber approach, accounting for confinement provided by the internal circular steel tube, and geometric and material …

The Rapid Chemically Induced Corrosion Of Concrete Sewers At High H2s Concentration, Xuan Li, Liza O'Moore, Yarong Song, Philp Bond, Zhiguo Yuan, Simeon Wilkie, Lucija Hanzic, Guangming Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Concrete corrosion in sewers is primarily caused by H2S in sewer atmosphere. H2S concentration can vary from several ppm to hundreds of ppm in real sewers. Our understanding of sewer corrosion has increased dramatically in recent years, however, there is limited knowledge of the concrete corrosion at high H2S levels. This study examined the corrosion development in sewers with high H2S concentrations. Fresh concrete coupons, manufactured according to sewer pipe standards, were exposed to corrosive conditions in a pilot-scale gravity sewer system with gaseous H2S at 1100 ± 100 ppm. The corrosion process was continuously monitored by measuring the surface …

Numerical Analysis Of Axially Loaded Circular High Strength Concrete-Filled Double Steel Tubular Short Columns, Mizen Ahmed, Qing Quan Liang, Vipulkumar I. Patel, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Circular high-strength concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) columns are high performance members where the internal and external steel tubes offer significant confinement to the concrete infill. The confinement remarkably improves the concrete compressive strength and ductility. However, no fiber element models have been formulated for computing the responses of CFDST columns with circular steel tubes filled with high-strength concrete incorporating accurate confinement to the core and sandwiched concrete. In this paper, a new fiber-based numerical model is developed that computes the axial load-strain responses of circular high-strength CFDST short columns under axial loading. Based on existing experimental results, a new …
