The Military Meaning Of The New Soviet Doctrine, Jeffrey W. Legro Dec 1989

The Military Meaning Of The New Soviet Doctrine, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

The current ferment in Soviet military doctrine has led to uncertainty and debate over its implications. On one hand, Gorbachev's peaceful rhetoric, backed by force reductions, is competing with the Bolshoi's ballerinas for favorable Western press reviews. Public opinion-and many public officials-perceive a reduced military threat from the Soviet army. On the other hand, skeptics believe that recent doctrinal changes are compatible with a modernized, more efficient Soviet military machine. In their view, the Soviet army is definitely changing, but the threat will not. A review of the operational implications of the new Soviet security themes indicates that neither the …

The Heart Of American History (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers Oct 1989

The Heart Of American History (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

Review of the book, The Heart of American History by James McPherson. Charlottesville: University Press of Virginia, 1989.

The era of the Civil War and Reconstruction remains the crucible of American history, the trial that decisively defined this country and its self-perceived mission. The American people seem to recognize that fact, for no era in our history attracts the general reading public as does that between 1861 and 1877.

Absolute Margaret: Margaret More Roper And "Well Learned" Men, Peter Iver Kaufman Oct 1989

Absolute Margaret: Margaret More Roper And "Well Learned" Men, Peter Iver Kaufman

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This article suggests that Margaret More Roper's 1534 letter to Alice Alington is an important witness to Tudor ideas of patriarchy and the history of gender identity. In 1557 William Ras tell was the first of many to question not only Margaret's authorship of the letter, but also her acquiescence to authorities and opposition to her father. Evidence suggests, however, that Margaret was a part of Erasmus's humanist network of friendship, remained so after More's refusal to swear the oath and his imprisonment, and that her appeals to her father were genuine. By the time Margaret and More debated conformity, …

Noteworthy Collections: Virginia, W. John Hayden Sep 1989

Noteworthy Collections: Virginia, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

The above collections represent the second record for the state of Virginia, and may well establish the northernmost station for the species in the eastern United States. According to B.L. Lipscomb (Sida 8:320-327. 1980), this Old World weed is spreading throughout the warmer regions of North America. The only previous record of the species from the state is a Fernald specimen from Owl Creek in Virginia Beach. R.W. Tyndall, who found the species in northeastern North Carolina, was unable in 1978 to locate the plant at Fernald's Virginia Beach locality (Castanea 48:277-280. 1983). The Amelia County plants occur in two …

On Being Better But Not Smarter Than Others: The Muhammad Ali Effect, Scott T. Allison, George R. Goethals, David M. Messick Sep 1989

On Being Better But Not Smarter Than Others: The Muhammad Ali Effect, Scott T. Allison, George R. Goethals, David M. Messick

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Past research suggests that people believe that they perform socially desirable behaviors more frequently and socially undesirable behaviors less frequently than others (Goethals, 1986; Messick, Bloom, Boldizar, & Samuelson, 1985). The present research examined whether this perception also characterizes people's thinking about intelligent and unintelligent behaviors. In Study 1, subjects wrote lists of behaviors that they or others did. Subjects indicated that they performed more good and intelligent behaviors and fewer bad and unintelligent behaviors than others, although the magnitude of these differences was greater for good and bad acts than for intelligent and unintelligent ones. In Study 2, a …

Frequency Of Rickettsia Sps. In Dermacentor Variabilis And Amblyomma Americanum In Central Hanover County, Virginia, Peggy Ann Keefe

Master's Theses

In the eastern United States, Dermacentor variabilis is the primary vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the etiological agent for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in eastern United States increased steadily from 1959 to 1979 to a peak of one case per 200,000 people in 1979 (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 1985). In 1976, 98.9% of the reported cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever were east of the 100th meridian with 1.1% occurring west of the 100th meridian (Burgdorfer, 1977). Hanover County, Virginia is an endemic area for this disease (Sonenshine, 1971); the last reported case was …

Facial And Pictorial Recognition As A Function Of Massed Versus Distributed Presentation And Imaging Instructions, John Allyn Cayard Aug 1989

Facial And Pictorial Recognition As A Function Of Massed Versus Distributed Presentation And Imaging Instructions, John Allyn Cayard

Master's Theses

Beneficial effects of distributed practice and rehearsal on recognition has been demonstrated in numerous memory studies for verbal stimuli and manual skills. However, no research has been reported using non-verbal, pictorial stimuli. In addition, few studies have examined the effects of pictorial rehearsal. The present research examines the effects of massed versus distributed practice and post-exposure imaging on pictorial memory. The first and third experiments used faces while the second used plant stimuli. In general, the results showed beneficial effects for post-presentation imaging. Presentation mode produced complex effects, but generally supported the superiority of distributed presentation. The results of Experiment …

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator : Consistency As A Result Of Genuine And Discrepant Personality Type Feedback, Stephanie Ann Falk Aug 1989

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator : Consistency As A Result Of Genuine And Discrepant Personality Type Feedback, Stephanie Ann Falk

Master's Theses

Because of the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI; Myers & McCaulley, 1988), psychological practitioners, consultants and researchers need to address implications of personality type feedbeck for clients, employees, and research subjects. This study investigated consistency of the MBTI as a result of genuine and discrepant personality type feedback. True and false feedback was expected to influence subjects in the directton of feedback given. Subjects were selected based on their Sensing-Intuitive (S-N) preference scores. Each of the forty subjects was given either true personality type feedback (TFG) or false personality type feedback (FFG), and then retested. Results showed that …

Half A Memory : The Vietnam War In The American Mind, 1975-1985, Mark W. Jackley Aug 1989

Half A Memory : The Vietnam War In The American Mind, 1975-1985, Mark W. Jackley

Master's Theses

This study attempts to show how Americans in general remembered the Vietnam War from 1975 to 1985, the decade after it ended. A kind of social history, the study concentrates on the war as remembered in the popular realm, examining novels as well as nonfiction, poetry, plays, movies, articles in political journals, songs, memorials, public opinion polls and more. Most everything but academic history is discussed. The study notes how the war's political history was not much remembered; the warrior, not the war, became the focus of national memory. The study argues that personal memory predominated over political memory for …

[Introduction To] The Medical Offset Effect And Public Health Policy: Mental Health Industry In Transition, Jonathan B. Wight, John L. Fiedler Jun 1989

[Introduction To] The Medical Offset Effect And Public Health Policy: Mental Health Industry In Transition, Jonathan B. Wight, John L. Fiedler

Bookshelf

Does the timely treatment of mental illness result in a drop in the cost of health care, and if so, what is the cost effectiveness? This study provides an overview, synthesis, and analysis of the medical offset effect. It demonstrates that a medical offset effect does exist and the size of the effect is significant. A behavioral model provides a precise method for ascertaining the dimensions of medical offset and an explanation of the underlying causal relationships. The offset effect for an important population group is analyzed through the use of Medicaid patient data from Georgia and Michigan. This clear, …

Flora Of Richmond National Battlefield Park, Virginia, W. John Hayden, Melanie Lynn Haskins, Miles F. Johnson, James M. Gardner

Biology Faculty Publications

An inventory of the vascular flora of nine of eleven units of Richmond National Battlefield Park was compiled from 1985 to 1987. Each site was visited during the growing season in two to four week intervals; plant species were identified and recorded in the field and/or collected for later study. A total of 761 different species were identified in the surveyed units, and 2487 individual records of species per particular park unit were noted. Twenty-three percent of the flora consists of exotic species, largely from Eurasia. Voucher specimens are housed in the herbaria of the University of Richmond and Virginia …

Psychosocial Effects Of Juvenile Rheumatic Disease : The Family And Peer Systems As A Context For Coping, Jennifer Ann Harris May 1989

Psychosocial Effects Of Juvenile Rheumatic Disease : The Family And Peer Systems As A Context For Coping, Jennifer Ann Harris

Master's Theses

The psychosocial effects of juvenile rheumatic diseases and disease activity were examined among 24 families (12 with a rheumatic disease child, 12 with no chronic illness). Rheumatic disease children were paired with a healthy control child nominated by their classroom teacher. Family and child functioning was assessed through measures of stress, competence, coping, and adjustment while observations in the classroom were made to assess peer relations. MANOVA's and ANOVA's were performed to determine significant differences. Families with a child with inactive rheumatic disease tended to be less likely to seek out and accept help, more likely to put activities into …

Pebble Nest Microhabitats Of Semotilus Species (Pisces: Cyprinidae), James Timothy Magee May 1989

Pebble Nest Microhabitats Of Semotilus Species (Pisces: Cyprinidae), James Timothy Magee

Master's Theses

The pebble nest microhabitats of four species of Semotilus were compared. Pit/mound nests of Semotilus corporalis were significantly larger than the pit/ridge nests of Semotilus atromaculatus, Semotilus lumbee, and Semotilus thoreauianus. Nests of S. corporalis were in wider and deeper streams. Pits of S. lumbee nests were longest of the four species; those of S. corporalis were widest and deepest. Semotilus corporalis used a greater proportion of larger stones (23 mm or greater) in nest construction than the other three species. There was no significant difference in the electivity index (percentage of nest pebble sizes versus those of the substrate) …

Training Potential Witnesses To Produce Higher Quality Face Composites, David Bradley Marwitz May 1989

Training Potential Witnesses To Produce Higher Quality Face Composites, David Bradley Marwitz

Master's Theses

This study attempted to determine if training and familiarization with a composite construction system would improve the quality of subjects' composite production. Subjects were trained in the use of the Mac-a-Mug Pro system over two sessions. During the course of the two meetings, subjects constructed eleven composites (six from memory and five with the face in-view) and were allowed time to practice with the system. Results suggests that the quality of subjects' composites improved with practice. However, training with the composite system prior to exposure to the first face did not lead to higher quality composites. These results have implications …
