Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman Dec 1966

Indian Slavery In Spanish Guatemala, 1524-1550, William L. Sherman

History ETDs

Some understanding of the state of native labor in the Indies is fundamental to an appreciation of post-Conquest society in the New World. The social and economic implications of Indian servitude are of such magnitude that they transcend other more dramatic aspects of Spanish domination in the sixteenth century. For Indian labor--certainly in the first decades--was the base upon which Spanish society reated; without it there waa a very real possibility of the abandonment of many American kingdoms. The degrees to which the conqueror depended upon the vanquished at once reflects the weak edifice of colonial society and defines the …

The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib Dec 1966

The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib

Dissertations and Theses

The word mysticism in the English language has been corrupted and abused by its difference usages in the various disciplines such as religion, poetry, and philosophy. In Islam the only word which refers to a mystic is a Sufi. Sufism, according to its adherents, is the highest form of human experience, the ultimate reality of God. The Sufi theme is "Know thyself and thou wilt know God."

Sufism has been considered by Sufis and by Orientalists as the ancient school of wisdom, of quietism, of attaining the highest union and of purification of the soul. It embodies the strains of …

Electronic Technique For Resolving Ambiguities Of Sinusoidal Function Transducers., James W. Campbell Dec 1966

Electronic Technique For Resolving Ambiguities Of Sinusoidal Function Transducers., James W. Campbell

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A circular function transducer is a device whose output is a circular trigonometric (sinusoidal) function of the input to the device. The sinusoidal nature of this class of transducer's output results in identical responses for many admissible inputs. Consequently, an ambiguity exists as to which of the many possible input values produce any particular output value. Even a history of the output from an initial reference input becomes ambiguous once the output completes one cycle of the sinusoid. To be a generally useful instrumentation component, the ambiguity of circular function transducers must be resolved.

Circular function transducers are currently used …

Predicting Scholastic Success In A School Of Law, Louida Dare Murray Dec 1966

Predicting Scholastic Success In A School Of Law, Louida Dare Murray

Psychology ETDs

Professional training is a costly undertaking both for the individual being trained and the institution that trains him. Each year, all over the United States, many young men and women embark upon their professional training as potential lawyers; each year many of these same young men and women withdraw from the law program. Some of the students admittedly withdraw because they ascertain that they will not be able to complete their law training due to inability to cope with the material which they are expected to master. Others, fully capable of dealing with the material in the intellectual sense, find …

The Use Of Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Richard Clapp Dec 1966

The Use Of Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Richard Clapp

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Handsheets were made with a bleached sulfite pulp, titanium dioxide and cationic agents. The optical properties of these sheets were studied in order to determine and compare the efficiency of the titanium dioxide retained. The cationic agents used in this study were a quaternary ammonium salt, a polyamide, cationic starches made with these two chemicals, and a commercial cationic starch.

When the optical properties of handsheets made from these substances were compared, it was found that the quaternary ammonium salt gave the highest opacity but the lowest retention. The polyamide gave lower opacities but higher retentions. The cationic starches made …

Responce Of Sweet Potato Vine Cuttings To Physical And Chemical Root Inducing Treatments, Farouk Khairi Abdulla

Masters Theses

Impomoea batatas, the sweet potato, is the only representative of the Convolvulaceae considered to be an important vegetable crop in tropical and sub-tropical countries. They are a good source of carbohydrates and vitamin A. They are used in alcohol and starch preparation.

Sweet potatoes are grown from plants produced from roots of the previous crop or from vine cuttings. In regions with short growing seasons, and for early production, the crop is grown from plants produced from roots bedded in a hot bed or cold frame,

Meyer (21) found that planting Porto Rico sweet potatoes slips deeper in the soil …

The Effects Of Glycerol Levels, Equilibration Times, And Their Interrelationship With Bulls On The Ability Of Bovine Semen To Survive The Freezing Process, Thomas William Lamb Dec 1966

The Effects Of Glycerol Levels, Equilibration Times, And Their Interrelationship With Bulls On The Ability Of Bovine Semen To Survive The Freezing Process, Thomas William Lamb

Masters Theses

In the past few years, artificial insemination has become one of the most important tools that the cattle breeder has at his disposal to improve the quality of his animals. The artificial insemination organizations invest a considerable amount of time and money in locating sires. A portion of these bulls are rejected after semen test because of low fertility or a low rate of survival of spermatozoa during the semen freezing process. The loss of many valuable bulls and much time and money might be avoided if the causes of freezing failures in some bulls could be determined. With this …

The Effect Of Neurosecretions From The Cerebral Ganglia On Blood Glucose Levels In Lumbricus Terrestris, Joan Vanderpol Craig Dec 1966

The Effect Of Neurosecretions From The Cerebral Ganglia On Blood Glucose Levels In Lumbricus Terrestris, Joan Vanderpol Craig

Masters Theses

Introduction

The presence of neurosecretory cells in the suprapharyngeal ganglia of Lumbricus terrestris has been well established (B. and E. Scharrer, 1937). Since these cells may well be the only source of hormones in this organism (B. Scharrer, 1959), the question arises as to their role in the animal's regulation of metabolism The particular aspect of this problem investigated here concerns the effect of these neurosecretory substances on the blood glucose levels in L. terrestris.

Preliminary studies by this investigator on glucose levels in earthworms revealed that blood samples of approximately 15 microliters could be obtained from each animal and …

This portion of the study is specifically concerned with elementary grades one through six and was arbitrarily …

An Extension Of The Reinforcement Contiguity Issue – The Effect Of Retention In The Goal Box After Reinforcement, Marilyn L. Grey Dec 1966

An Extension Of The Reinforcement Contiguity Issue – The Effect Of Retention In The Goal Box After Reinforcement, Marilyn L. Grey

All Master's Theses

This study investigated one prediction of Guthrie's theory of learning (1936, 1952)--that retention in the goal box after reinforcement increases the likelihood of incompatible responses to the goal stimuli and, thus, decreases learning. Three measures of learning were used: number of trials to criterion, total number of correct trials in the first twenty trials, and number of subjects who met criterion of five successive correct responses within forty trials.

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appleman Dec 1966

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appleman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

Pain Elicited Aggression As A Function Of Withdrawal From Morphine Addiction, Brian G. Teel Dec 1966

Pain Elicited Aggression As A Function Of Withdrawal From Morphine Addiction, Brian G. Teel

Masters Theses

One branch of aggression research has concentrated on the elicitation of aggressive behavior by means of exteroceptive stimulation. Electric shock or similar painful stimuli (Ulrich & Azrin, 1962) are well known to produce fighting in the laboratory rat. This basic method has allowed experimental analysis of a wide scope of associated variables.

Ulrich and Azrin (1962) investigated several different parameters. They found that laboratory rats increased their fighting behavior as the frequency of shocks increased from 0.1 to 38 shocks per minute. With frequency fixed, the fighting response rate resembled an inverted U-shaped curve when shock intensity was increased from …

Six Dimensions Of Religiosity And Riesman's Inner/Other-Direction, Edward E. Mckenna Dec 1966

Six Dimensions Of Religiosity And Riesman's Inner/Other-Direction, Edward E. Mckenna

Masters Theses

First three paragraphs:

To what extent do different types of religious behavior vary with different levels of inner- and other-direction?

Religious behavior is multi-dimensional in nature, with several qualitatively distinct dimensions. Hypothesized relations between different dimensions of religious behavior and inner/other-direction, together with the assumed shift from inner-direction to other-direction, have been formulated to explain the now familiar, but nevertheless controversial, religious revival in American society. This revival is controversial in the sense that it extends only to certain types, or dimensions, of religious behavior. There have been increases in church membership, identification, and ritual observance, but not in other …

Productivity In Hampshire, Dorset And Southdown Flocks Of Sheep And Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Performance Of Lambs, Ben Thomas Powell Dec 1966

Productivity In Hampshire, Dorset And Southdown Flocks Of Sheep And Evaluation Of Factors Affecting Performance Of Lambs, Ben Thomas Powell

Masters Theses

Agriculture is entering an age where, to survive, the Tennessee farmer must either purchase more land or improve production on the land he has. Most of the time it is more economical to improve one's production per acre or per animal. One method of accomplishing greater production is through selection of superior producing animals. Selection has been done for centuries through visual observation. To justify their existence as a group, breeders of registered sheep must produce a type of sheep superior to those in the hands of the commercial producers they serve. This superiority must be expressed in demonstrated ability …

The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton Dec 1966

The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton

Masters Theses

(Introduction) Previous work in this laboratory has shown that there is a decrease in sulfate production when 35S-cysteine is incubated with liver homogenates prepared from vitamin E-deficient rats as compared with the sulfate produced by homogenates from vitamin E-sufficient rats. In avitaminosis E the lowered incorporation of a test dose of 35SO4= into cellular lipoprotein and the mucopolysaccharides isolated from rib cartilage and lung has been shown. A decrease in the breaking strength of rats' aorta, presumably the result of impaired collagen production, was obtained when the aortas from vitamin E-deficient rats were compared …

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Nitrogen And Several Climatic Factors On Yield And Evapotranspiration Of Corn, Bobby Ray Hathcock Dec 1966

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Nitrogen And Several Climatic Factors On Yield And Evapotranspiration Of Corn, Bobby Ray Hathcock

Masters Theses

A knowledge of the moisture content of the soil is important in irrigation experiments, in field experiments in general, and in irrigation practice on the farm (45). Measurement of soil moisture content has received much attention in the past several years with the increased concern and investigation into the area of consumptive use (evapotranspiration). In recent years, the emphasis on water use by various crops has led to the development of several methods for estimating evapotranspiration (ET.) In order to estimate ET, it is necessary to have a record of the soil moisture content throughout the growing season. The neutron …

Morphological Response Of Chrysanthemum Morifolium Varieties To A Growth Retardant As Modified By Light, James G. Staley Dec 1966

Morphological Response Of Chrysanthemum Morifolium Varieties To A Growth Retardant As Modified By Light, James G. Staley

Masters Theses

More than fifty years ago scientist discovered that the growth and behavior of many plants could be changed and often controlled by applying small amounts of organic chemicals to leaves, stems, or roots. These chemicals have become known as "growth regulators" and some have proved to be extremely useful. Today growth regulating chemicals are being used as standard practices in the production of farm crops and ornamental plants. The responses obtained from these confounds have been adapted to many commercial uses. New chemicals with new uses continually increase the list. How plants respond when sprayed. dusted, or soaked with growth …
