Background: San Diego’s Tuberculosis (TB) incidence is more than double the national rate. The majority of cases of active TB are due to the progression of latent TB infection (LTBI).

Objectives: This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to increase knowledge, awareness, and improve attitudes and practices regarding TB among college students.

Participants: Twenty Community College Students in San Diego participated in the project.

Methods: Students attended an in-person educational session. A pre-post knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) questionnaire measured the impact.

Background: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder worldwide. In the United States, DS occurs in one out of every 700 births. Children with DS have an increased risk of developing serious health conditions. In the military health system, children with DS face many barriers such as frequent relocations and poor access to specialty care. Primary care providers (PCPs) do not consistently follow published guidelines for health supervision.

Undocumented students face myriad obstacles while attending higher education institutions that would deter them from completing their academic journeys. Furthermore, they are placed with a dual narrative that labels them as either dangerous or exceptional. This study explored the lived experiences of undocumented students in college in the San Diego-Tijuana border region to consider what factors have led to resilience and resistance in their academic journey. Research has found that teaching about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can raise U.S. high school students’ awareness about DEI-related topics and develop their critical thinking skills to analyze DEI-related issues. But the achievements of DEI-focused education are limited. Thus, DEI-focused education needs complementary efforts to enhance student outcomes. Research has also found that learning an additional language (LX) may heighten students’ interest in learning about other cultural communities, nurture students’ cross-cultural empathy, and elicit culturally responsive behaviors. Context: A microsystem assessment was completed by Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) students in the medical-surgical/telemetry unit at Hospital X located in the San Francisco Bay Area. This microsystem cares for patients diagnosed with sepsis, congestive heart failure (CHF), electrolyte imbalance, and alcohol withdrawal.

This project aims to educate labor and delivery nurses on evidence-based maternal labor positions that promote fetal descent in the first and second stages of labor. In a labor and delivery unit in the San Francisco Bay Area Silicon Valley region, there is a gap in nurse knowledge relating to labor positions. Problem: According to a pre-survey collected, approximately six percent of medical-surgical nurses report expert knowledge with the “Inpatient Handoff Sepsis Bundle Checklist,” a checklist that details interventions to be taken when a patient is diagnosed with sepsis. About thirty-five percent of these nurses also report expert confidence levels in caring for sepsis patients. Problem: This quality improvement project aims to increase SEP-1 sepsis bundle compliance among nursing staff at a 16-bed emergency department through targeted continual staff education on sepsis screening and best practices. Currently, the unit is experiencing cases of sepsis fallout and is not meeting the 90% threshold on three treatment metrics as defined by the institutional sepsis bundle time goals. Problem: Results from a voluntarily anonymous pre-survey about sepsis revealed that a majority of the seventeen nurses assessed themselves below an "expert knowledge '' level. The survey results present an opportunity to improve the nurses’ knowledge and confidence in nursing response and improve patient outcomes with sepsis.
