The Role Of Attributional Style, Dysfunctional Attitudes, And Negative Life Events On Depression In College Students, Linda V Frantom Jan 1993

The Role Of Attributional Style, Dysfunctional Attitudes, And Negative Life Events On Depression In College Students, Linda V Frantom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Two major cognitive theories, Beck's cognitive theory (1967) and Seligman's reformulated learned helplessness theory (1978), have dominated depression research over the last fifteen years. Both of these theories propose a diathesis-stress model in which significant life events are imparted by specific cognitive styles; This study incorporated the major tenets of both theories to examine the role of dysfunctional attitudes, attributional style, and negative life events on Beck Depression Inventory scores in college students. It was hypothesized that the latter two components would interact with negative life events to predict initial and future depression scores; Ninety-eight introductory psychology students completed a …

The Relationship Of Depression, Gender, And Sex Roles, Scott V. Cutler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between gender and depression as a function of sex roles. Four hundred twenty subjects were recruited from two introductory psychology courses at Utah State University. Subjects completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

A difference was found in the rate of depression between females and males that exceeds the generally accepted 2:1 ratio. There was a female to male ratio of approximately 4:1 in the group of subjects who indicated a high level of depression on the Beck Depression Inventory.

Multiple Regression Analysis was computed …

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Of Adolescent Depression: Effects On Multiple Parameters, Steven E. Curtis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Clinical depression is the most frequently reported mental health problem for adolescents. Previously studied psychological treatment approaches for adolescent depression have recently been combined and packaged into a comprehensive psychoeducational intervention titled the Adolescent Coping With Depression Course (ACWDC). This study investigated whether treatment of clinically depressed adolescents using the ACWDC resulted in significant emotional, behavioral, and/or academic performance changes as reported by the adolescent, and observed by the parents and teachers.

Nineteen clinically depressed adolescents were identified by screening 876 students in a local high school, using a multistage screening procedure. All selected subjects met the DSM III-R criteria …

Effects Of Bse On Depression/Anxiety In Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Cynthia Ann Schnetter O'Neal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study employed three questionnaires to determine if depression, anxiety and mood levels in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer differed when the breast lump was discovered via breast self-exam versus discovery by physician examination, mammogram or accidental discovery by self or spouse. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory, anxiety was measured by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Scale and mood was measured by the General Health Questionnaire. The Neuman Systems Model was the conceptual framework for this study. Sixty-two women between the ages of 26-80 years completed the three questionnaires while awaiting the physician during an office visit. …

Gender Effects On Recall, Clinical Judgement And Treatment Recommendations For A Combination Of Major Depression And Alcohol Dependence Symptoms, Jodi L. French

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the effect of client gender on several aspects of clinical decision-making processes and clinical judgement when a client presented with a combination of depressive and alcohol-dependent symptoms. Forty-four male and 44 female clinicians, who came from various mental health disciplines (i.e., psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, and psychiatry), volunteered to participate as subjects.

The subjects were assigned to hear one of four audiotapes (two male tapes and two female tapes) in which mock clients gave the same initial presentation of symptoms and problems. After listening to the tapes, the clinicians were asked to engage in a number …

Mormon Women And Depression, Jeanmarie Maxwell Jan 1991

Mormon Women And Depression, Jeanmarie Maxwell

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the prevalence and level of depression among Mormon women compared to non-Mormon women. The hypothesis states that the incidence of depression will be higher among LDS women than non-LDS women. A significant negative relationship is predicted to exist between religious practice and depression where the less they practice, the more depressed they would tend to be; A random sample of 45 LDS and 49 non-LDS women were given a survey instrument to measure their level and rate of depression and their degree of religious belief and practice. LDS women appear to be more depressed than the rest …

Effects Of Antihypertensive And Cardiac Drugs And Level Of Depression In Community-Based Elders, Angela Hays

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this ex post facto study was to determine the effects of antihypertensive and cardiac drugs on the level of depression in community-based elders. Roy's Adaptation Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected using the Brink Geriatric Depression Scale and the Drug Information Sheet. These questionnaires were administered to 40 subjects ages 55 and older who were taking antihypertensive and/or cardiac drugs or neither antihypertensive nor cardiac drugs. One null hypothesis and five directional hypotheses guided this study. The null hypothesis stated that there would be no difference in mean depression scores among the …

Cognitive And Attributional Correlates Of Depression: An Analysis Of The Redundancy Between Beck's Cognitive Triad And Seligman's Attributional Styles, Kent W. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the degree vi of redundancy between two prominent cognitive theories of depression: Beck's cognitive triad and Seligrnan's attributional triad. Three hundred and eighteen subjects were recruited from nine different psychology courses at Utah State University and affiliated locations across the state. Subjects completed the Cognitive Triad Inventory (CTI), the Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

Results indicate that the three CTI subscales (self, world, and future) and the three ASQ subscales (internal, global, and stable) did not correlate sufficiently to merit integration across measures. However, factor analyses reduced …

Theses

Adults between the ages of 65 and 90 were the subjects of a study to explore the relationship between depression and the variables of personal loss , support system, and perceived physical health . Thirty- four subjects completed a self- administered depression scale (the Geriatric Depression Scale) and a personal information sheet . The relationships between depression and perceived personal health was significant , as was the relationship between depression and the support system. The relationship between depression and loss was not significant . As one's perceived health became better , depression decreased . Likewise, as one's support system increased, …

The Effects Of Diary Writing Support Groups On Women's Depression, Self-Acceptance And Well-Being, Linda Elaine Barnes May 1989

The Effects Of Diary Writing Support Groups On Women's Depression, Self-Acceptance And Well-Being, Linda Elaine Barnes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was conducted to determine whether learning specific writing techniques and discussing them in a small group is more beneficial to women than writing a journal using self-taught techniques, or not writing at all.

Instruments used included the Beck Depression Inventory and the California Personality Inventory (Self-Acceptance and Well-Being scales).

The literature review covers four general areas: a brief discussion of the impact of contemporary feminism on traditional therapy; an examination of feminist therapy, specifically its advocacy of consciousness-raising groups as a therapy alternative; women's self-reports on diary or journal writing; and information on modern non-literary journal uses including …

The Relationship Between Suicidal Phenomena And Depression, Dysfunctional Attitudes, Irrational Beliefs, And Hopelessness, Shonna L Erickson Jan 1989

The Relationship Between Suicidal Phenomena And Depression, Dysfunctional Attitudes, Irrational Beliefs, And Hopelessness, Shonna L Erickson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study of depression and suicidal phenomena among adolescents has lagged behind that of adults. Very few studies have examined attitudes and beliefs of relevance to cognitive therapy among suicidal adolescents. In this study 40 incarcerated juvenile females were administered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS), the Irrational Beliefs Test (IBT), and the Hopelessness Scale (HS). A stepwise discriminant analysis identified seven variables which significantly differentiated the suicidal from the nonsuicidal group. These variables were number of previous attempts, the HS, DAS, subscales 4, 5, and 8 of the IBT (Frustration reactive, emotional irresponsibility, and dependency, …

An Investigation Of Factors Associated With Depression In Older Adults, Katherine Mary Mayhew Jan 1989

An Investigation Of Factors Associated With Depression In Older Adults, Katherine Mary Mayhew

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As the population ages, there is a need for continued research into the etiology of geriatric depression and improved ways to detect individuals at risk for developing this disorder. The current study explores relationships between depression, health perception, life satisfaction, and loneliness for 44 older (51-79) subjects. Relationships between the four variables and marital status, bereavement, monthly income, satisfaction with income, residence, occupation, education, size of household, and the number of living children and siblings are also examined; Descriptive statistics for the depression measures and their correlates are presented, followed by a breakdown of the measures by demographic characteristics. Furthermore, …

The Effects Of Touch On Depression In Elderly Nursing Home Residents, Charlotte R. Taylor

MSN Research Projects

This was a quasi-experimental study designed to determine the effects of touch on depression in elderly nursing home residents. The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference at the .05 level of significance between depressed elders who participated in touch therapy and elders who did not participate in touch therapy. Data were collected from 10 elders, age 65 or older, who were residents of two nursing homes in Northeast Mississippi. All subjects were administered the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) as a pretest/posttest. These scores were then compared using the ^ test at the .05 level of significance. The …

The Relationship Of Stress, Coping, And Social Support To Depression, Katherine B. Wissman Jan 1986

The Relationship Of Stress, Coping, And Social Support To Depression, Katherine B. Wissman

Honors Theses

The relationship of the sources, mediators, and manifestations of stress were examined in a review of the literature. Stress is comprised of microstressors and daily hassles in addition to negative life events and changes. Direct, problem-focused coping mechanisms were found to be more effective in reducing stress than emotion-focused strategies. Social support reduces stress through strong main effects, but the interaction of stress and support depends on the specific types of stress and support under study.

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Neither Glasser's (1976) survey data nor popular magazine articles (which seldom cite references) have provided conclusive evidence regarding the existence of running addiction or established causality between this addiction and Beta-endorphin. An integration and summarization of research on the effects of opiates, Beta-endorphin and running will answer the following question, or indicate where evidence is insufficient and explore avenues that require further research.

  • Question 1: Is distance running addictive and if so, what is the role of Beta-endorphin in this addiction?

Secondly, prior reviews of research of the effects of opiates and Beta-endorphin on psychopathological illnesses will be combined with …
