In this dissertation, the discrete-time extended Kalman filter is analyzed for its ability to attenuate finite-energy disturbances, known as the H-infinity property. Though the extended Kalman filter is designed to be a locally optimal minimum variance estimator, this dissertation proves that it has additional properties, such as H-infinity. This analysis is performed with the extended Kalman filter in direct form. Since this form reduces assumptions placed on the system in previous works on convergence and H-2 properties of the extended Kalman filter, the extended Kalman filter used as a nonlinear observer for noise-free models is revisited using the direct form …

The pointwise Ergodic Theorem states that the time averages converge to the space averages almost everywhere, for any integrable function $f$. When we consider in continuous time, because of instrumental limitations, time measurements cannot be taken exactly at any instant of time. The medial geniculate body (MGB) is the target of excitatory and inhibitory inputs from several neural sources. Among these, the inferior colliculus (IC) is an important nucleus in the midbrain that acts as a nexus for many auditory pathways and projections, ascending and descending, throughout the rest of the central auditory system and provides both excitatory and inhibitory projections to the MGB. Morphological Response In Sister Taxa Of Woodrats (Genus: Neotoma) Across A Zone Of Secondary Contact, Michaela M. Koenig

This study focuses on a secondary contact zone between two sister species of woodrat, Neotoma fuscipes (dusky-footed woodrat) and N. macrotis (big-eared woodrat). Along the Nacimiento River, on the border of southern Monterey and northern San Luis Obispo counties, the ranges of these sister species of woodrats meet and overlap forming a secondary contact zone. The zone of secondary contact is estimated to include a 500-meter (~1,650 linear feet) portion of the Nacimiento River riparian corridor.

This research examines quantifiable morphological change that is likely associated with heightened inter-specific competition within the contact zone. When in sympatry the sister species …

This thesis adopts an industrial approach to auteur study, engaging in a detailed analysis of the extratextual crafting of metal-musician-turned-horror-filmmaker Rob Zombie’s auteur image from the year 2000 to the present day. It proposes the existence of a new authorial archetype in the twenty-first century American horror market, the convergence-era horror auteur, whose manufacturing and mobilization is tied explicitly to the niche-oriented marketing efforts of media industries. This dissertation explores the hypothesis that structural priming is an internal mechanism motivating processes of convergence in bilinguals. The focus of the investigation is linguistic innovations in Spanish produced by Spanish-English bilinguals. Innovations involve both changes in the frequency of alternative constructions and existing patterns produced in new contexts modeled on English equivalents. From structural priming techniques that model convergence, the data assess the extent of English influence on Spanish, in a contact setting (New York, United States) and a non-contact setting (Córdoba, Argentina).

In this dissertation, I make three important contributions to the literature on regional economics. In Chapter 2, I construct a measure of early development, urban population density (urban population relative to total land area), that is novel to the growth literature, and apply GIS techniques to define and locate regions/cities and obtain geographic and historical measures across regions and cities. Chapter 3 investigates the persistence in sub-national development over the past 150 years. I find that regions that had a relatively higher urban population density in 1850 tend to be relatively more developed today. Geographic and climatic characteristics are significantly …

This problem provides a foundation for algorithms for decision-theoretic planning and probabilistic model checking, among other applications. However, evolutionary losses of bilateral symmetry have occurred sporadically in different lineages. CYC2-like and RAD-like are genes needed for the normal development of bilateral symmetry in snapdragon corollas. However, exactly how changes in the floral symmetry patterning genes correlate with the origin and loss of floral bilateral remains poorly known. Convergence refers to a phenomenon where multiple communication technologies are integrated into a single device. Technosexuality proposes a convergence between sexuality as a social phenomenon and technologically mediated modes of interpersonal communication and sexual information consumption. The findings of this study indicate that though there is not a complete convergence between technology and sexuality, there nonetheless exists a relationship between the two constructs. Observations in the vicinity of a wildland fire showed the development of a convergence zone downwind of the convection column. These observations were obtained during a prescribed burn in complex terrain east of San Jose, California. A ground-based Halo Photonics, Ltd. Stream Line 75 Lidar acquired Doppler wind velocities and backscatter intensity in and around the fire plume from multiple vertically pointing, PPI, and RHI scans while a ASC miniSodar obtained vertical wind and turbulence profiles downwind. GMRES is a popular iterative method for solving linear systems and is one of the many Krylov methods. Despite its popularity, the convergence of GMRES is not completely understood. This thesis examined the role of agenda setting effects in creating conditions that could predict vote choice within the context of the 2010 general election in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. This survey utilized a mail survey sent to independent voters to measure the public agenda and thorough content analyses of local television news, the major local newspaper, candidate television advertisements and candidate websites to measure the media and candidate agendas. These agendas were compared using an innovative convergence score which reported the percent similarity between any two given agendas. Daubechies et al. introduced a particularly stable version of an IRLS algorithm and rigorously proved its convergence in 2010. They did not, however, consider the case in which prior information on the support of the sparse domain of the solution is available.
