Educational Leadership Supporting Faculty-Motivated Professional Development In Teaching And Experiential Learning, S. Richelle Mader Monaghan Jul 2021

Educational Leadership Supporting Faculty-Motivated Professional Development In Teaching And Experiential Learning, S. Richelle Mader Monaghan

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University

Teaching is one of the primary responsibilities of most university faculty members. Yet, pedagogical training and professional development in teaching and experiential learning are not employment requirements for most Ontario university faculty. This incongruence impacts faculty’s sense of self-efficacy, ability to protect their academic freedom, and their ability to design pedagogically informed curriculum. Additionally, it can negatively impact student outcomes while influencing institutional reputations and funding. In response, recommendations to address this problem of practice (PoP) must acknowledge the faculty prerogatives of autonomy, self-governance, and academic freedom. For that reason, this Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) evaluates and proposes educational leadership …

Cancel Culture And Cancel Discourse: Cultural Attacks On Academic Ideals, Mary Gondringer May 2021

Cancel Culture And Cancel Discourse: Cultural Attacks On Academic Ideals, Mary Gondringer

Culminating Projects in English

Calls for social justice have been around since the Civil Rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s, but it wasn’t until recently that America has seen a resurgence of these calls. Social media has made it easier for average people who wouldn’t normally consider themselves social justice warriors to fight for the social justice of others. With the help of social media, speaking up about social injustices has become easy and convenient. Out of this recent resurgence, we have seen a new culture form: cancel culture. Cancel discourse – the language that perpetuates cancel culture – is threatening the very …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Professoriate And The Embodiment Of Epistemic Coloniality/Whiteness: A Call For A Contemplative Approach To Academic Freedom, Faith Yacubian Jan 2020

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Professoriate And The Embodiment Of Epistemic Coloniality/Whiteness: A Call For A Contemplative Approach To Academic Freedom, Faith Yacubian

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Higher education in the United States has largely been influenced by colonial discourse. Archetypes of the academy, namely the professoriate, reflect and inhabit traces of Western or European schools of thought and colonial genealogy. Inspired by Black, Indigenous Students of Color (BISOC) at a small, private college in the Northeast, this writing aims to unveil the colonial lineage embodied by the professoriate through habits of whiteness. With the use of Critical Discourse Analysis and reflective anecdotes, observations are made about the professoriate’s epistemology and academic freedom’s role in reinforcing colonial epistemic principles, such as objectivity, mastery and autonomy. In so …

Faith, Spirituality, And Social Work Education: An Exploration Into The Quest For Integration, Shannon Cassidy Cousineau May 2018

Faith, Spirituality, And Social Work Education: An Exploration Into The Quest For Integration, Shannon Cassidy Cousineau

Doctor of Social Work Banded Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the integration of faith and spirituality in higher education, more specifically for social work students. Faith and spirituality are important aspects of many people’s lives, and it is important for social work students to understand and comfortably discuss issues and strengths around religion and spirituality. Due to its proposition that people are spiritual beings, who believe in something beyond themselves, Transpersonal Theory is used as a guide for this banded dissertation. At its core, Transpersonal Theory provides a foundation for the journey many people take to find a belief in something outside themselves, either physical, emotional, …

Social Media Policies And Academic Freedom: Higher Education Faculty And Administrator Perceptions, Andrew C. Diamond

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions higher education faculty members and administrators have on the use of social media, whether academic freedom applies to social media, and the legal protections of academic freedom on social media. A quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews were employed to gather descriptive data about perceptions from a mixed group of higher education faculty and administrators. Chi square analysis was used to determine significance of constructs. Results from this survey indicate that administrators are more likely to use social media personally and professionally, while faculty members are more likely to believe the …

'Pyrates' Of The Lyceum: Big Pharma, Patents, And Academic Freedom In Neoliberal Times, James Mcgillivray Jan 2017

'Pyrates' Of The Lyceum: Big Pharma, Patents, And Academic Freedom In Neoliberal Times, James Mcgillivray

PhD Dissertations

Academic freedom and freedom of expression are threatened by the corporatised university. As neoliberal policies embed themselves in all aspects of public (if not private) life, freedom of expression and academic freedom are being degraded and denigrated in the university, in the popular press, in the law, and in public life. The influence of intellectual property rights and proprietary claims surrounding patents are muzzling freedom of thought by corporate interests. Universities and the freedom of academic researchers to explore their fields have become casualties on this neoliberal battlefield. This political economy seeks to expose the free market contagion involved with …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Venture Philanthropy On The Mission Of Higher Education, Shon Baker Jan 2017

An Examination Of The Impact Of Venture Philanthropy On The Mission Of Higher Education, Shon Baker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Across the United States, state legislative funding declines are forcing colleges and universities to rapidly adjust to a variety of shortfalls in revenue. Even the most prosperous universities, normally immune to decreases in funding, find themselves experiencing financial difficulty. To offset fiscal gaps caused by budget shortfalls and legislative decisions, university presidents are increasingly turning to fundraising as a means of filling the financial void and no donors are more poised to give transformational gifts than venture philanthropists. While the donations of venture philanthropists are highly sought, little research has been given to the potential for threats to academic freedom …

Return To Holy Hill: Louisiana College, Academic Freedom, And The Southern Baptist Convention's Conservative Resurgence, 1995-2006, Joseph Learned Odenwald

Dissertations

This study examines a period in the history of Louisiana College in which the college’s sponsoring organization, the Louisiana Baptist Convention, a Southern Baptist affiliate, began to insist that professors at the college teach only in accordance with the official views of the Southern Baptist Convention. The literature is replete with studies on the movement affecting the Southern Baptist seminaries, but little has been written about the impact of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Conservative Resurgence on the colleges.

As such, this study explores the changes that were made to the academic freedom and governance policies as the trustees sought to …

Academic Freedom, Contingent Faculty, And Social Rectitude, David Austin Bingler May 2012

Academic Freedom, Contingent Faculty, And Social Rectitude, David Austin Bingler

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

“If education is the cornerstone of the structure of society and if progress in scientific knowledge is essential to civilization, few things can be more important than to enhance the dignity of the scholar’s profession, with a view to attracting into it’s ranks [professionals] of the highest ability, sound learning, and of strong and independent character.” (American Association of University Professors, 2010, p.294) The American Association of University Professors’ 1915 Declaration of Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure hold true for nearly all faculty members in higher education, with the exception of contingent faculty. Today, contingent faculty members make …

Freedom And Comfort In Academically-Related Political Discussions Among Economics And Political Science Faculty In A State Unive, John Hilston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation explored whether there was a relationship between comfort in discussing political views and faculty members' political party preferences. The questions of whether political comfort differed based on gender, religious affiliation, academic discipline, and/or institutional affiliation were also explored. Both economics and political science faculty did not report comfort in discussing political views in the context of departmental committee service. Economics faculty either did not report on their colleagues' political views or they disagreed with their colleagues' political views. Political science faculty either did not report on their colleagues' political views or they agreed with their colleagues' political views. …

Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder Jan 2008

Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores Islamism's interplay with higher education as the movement advances an agenda for worldwide reformation. Over an eighty-year period, Islamism has appropriated higher education institutions, professional associations, on- and off-campus organizations, and publications as a primary means to achieve its utopian objective of the Nizam Islami, or "Islamic Order." Findings show how the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt developed a Weberian bureaucratic organizational and administrative structure to exert influence not only in Egypt but also the world. A Qutb-inspired "hijra" of Muslim Brothers in universities proved itself adroit at filling macro-and micro-level policy vacuums in Soviet-aligned post-colonial societies, marginalizing …

A Comparison Of Administrator And Faculty Self-Report And Knowledge Of Distance Education, Related Intellectual Property Laws And Policy, And Tenets Of Academic Freedom, Mary Irene Pogue Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Administrator And Faculty Self-Report And Knowledge Of Distance Education, Related Intellectual Property Laws And Policy, And Tenets Of Academic Freedom, Mary Irene Pogue

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Distance education is an emerging force in higher education that is creating new opportunities and added challenges. The purpose of this study was to identify and compare what university administrators and faculty know about issues that surround a debate about ownership of intellectual products created for distance education including technologies used in distance education and the law, university policies, and tenets of academic freedom that are supposed to stimulate intellectual creativity. An Internet-based survey was used to gather data from university faculty and administrators at four southeastern research universities in the United States. Results indicated that respondents were almost universally …
