Cultural Competency Training For U.S. Army Security Force Assistance Brigade (Sfab) Brigade Medical Teams, Jacob Blount
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The United States Army began standing up Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFAB) in February 2018. The Brigade Medical Team (BMT) is an 11-person, interdisciplinary Army National Guard team. National Guard Soldiers only have one weekend per month and two weeks of annual training per year to develop/maintain cultural competence. The researcher investigated the efficacy of the Cross-Cultural Competence Trainer (3CT) V2 course to develop and maintain cultural competency in BMT personnel. Pre-test results were obtained from three military medical personnel and a post-test immediately after the course. Participants completed a longitudinal test 28-31 days after the post-test. There was a …
Posttraumatic Growth During Covid-19: A Quantitative Analysis Of Individualist And Collectivist Values, Stephanie Chalk
Posttraumatic Growth During Covid-19: A Quantitative Analysis Of Individualist And Collectivist Values, Stephanie Chalk
Dissertations, 2020-current
The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic has spurred a major global crisis. Collective trauma is inevitable. Compared to posttraumatic stress, relatively little research has been conducted on posttraumatic growth. This study examined the associations between individualism-collectivism, coping behaviors, and posttraumatic growth in the context of COVID-19. A total of 314 adult participants were recruited to complete a questionnaire on COVID-19 experiences, individualism-collectivism, coping, and posttraumatic growth. Posttraumatic growth was measured globally and across five factors: relating to others, personal strength, new possibilities, appreciation of life, and spirituality. A t-test found no difference in global posttraumatic growth in participants who were …

The Lived Experiences Of Graduate Student Veterans Enrolled In Cacrep-Accredited Counseling Programs: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Gerald Spangler
Doctoral Dissertations
Student veterans (SVs)are a population of students studied extensively at the undergraduate level. These students possess military traits and characteristics that influence their academic experiences. Existing research focuses on these experiences to better understand and assist in fostering academic persistence. However, there is gap in literature that explores the lived experiences of graduate SVs. This literature is even more pronounced when narrowed to graduate SVs enrolled in Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Therefore, this study sought to address this gap and gain a better understanding of graduate SVs and their academic experiences that lead to …

Cultural Competence Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Student Nurse Anesthetists, Ashley Nicole Minor, Loryn Elise Jamison
Cultural Competence Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Student Nurse Anesthetists, Ashley Nicole Minor, Loryn Elise Jamison
Doctoral Projects
The landscape of ethnicity is growing increasingly diverse. In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that by the time the 2020 Census is conducted, over half of the nation’s children will be of a minority group (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). With this evolution in cultural variety comes a necessity to incorporate exposure and training of cultural competency into professional health programs. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are a key demographic to professional growth within the realms of cultural competence as related to the field of nurse anesthesia. Along with clinical skills and advanced knowledge, cultural competence should be equally developed. …

DISSERTATION: TRUST IN LEADERSHIP TO DEVELOP COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL CULTURE AND EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Kara N. Mieszanek National Louis University
ABSTRACT
In education, we are constantly working toward increasing student achievement. Often, we pursue technical elements such as implementing programs, data analysis, utilizing assessment tools, embedding evaluation systems, etc. However, there is another critical element that may all too often get overlooked—the culture. The purpose of this study was to strip away all the layers required to achieve systemic change by observing what is at the core of it all: trust. Through qualitative and quantitative research, I took …
Putting Cajuns On The Map: Music's Role In Popularizing Louisiana's Bayou Culture, Christine Broussard
Putting Cajuns On The Map: Music's Role In Popularizing Louisiana's Bayou Culture, Christine Broussard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Southern Louisiana witnessed a grassroots Cajun cultural revival whose most active years stretched across three decades in the latter half of the twentieth century. While important local and world events created conditions favorable to its development, actors and events within the Cajun musical sphere specifically, and the establishment and use of iconography within that sphere, played integral roles in sustaining the Cajun renaissance into the 1980s. Activist efforts that recast long-held negative tropes about Cajun culture ensured modern-day Cajuns had access not only to cultural traditions but to the same spaces created to help keep those traditions alive. While those …
The Culture Gap: The Role Of Culture In Successful Refugee Settlement, Chelsea Lorraine Riley
The Culture Gap: The Role Of Culture In Successful Refugee Settlement, Chelsea Lorraine Riley
Honors College Theses
Globally, the displacement of persons is reaching record numbers, including millions of refugees seeking safety outside of their native countries. The existing literature on factors of successful refugee settlement lacks specific quantitative analysis, and most of the available information on the role of culture is limited to psychological and social research. I expect that large perceived differences in the culture of the refugee and the culture of the country in which they settle will cause a combination of xenophobic public responses and restrictive government policies, and therefore will be negatively related to successful social integration of those refugees. I assess …
Reading Knowledge Transfer From The Pre-Service Teaching Phase To The Novice Teaching Phase: A Phenomenological Study, Natalie Sajko
Reading Knowledge Transfer From The Pre-Service Teaching Phase To The Novice Teaching Phase: A Phenomenological Study, Natalie Sajko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This qualitative study explored the experiences of eight novice teachers as they transferred knowledge of reading instruction from their teacher education programs (TEPs) into their first classrooms in a rural district. Specific mechanisms for learning transfer (prior knowledge, motivation, context, and culture) and their perceived influences were also explored. Phenomenology was utilized to help explore these experiences and perceptions. Social constructivism, Situated Learning Theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and critical pedagogies (hooks, 2014; Love, 2019) were used to interpret findings in this study. This study centered on the following questions: (1) how do elementary novice teachers perceive reading knowledge transfer …
Identifying The Universals Of Death: An Interpretive Analysis Of Mortuary Ritual In Ancient Egypt And Modern America, Sarah Snare
Identifying The Universals Of Death: An Interpretive Analysis Of Mortuary Ritual In Ancient Egypt And Modern America, Sarah Snare
Senior Theses
This project compares mortuary practices in ancient Egypt and modern America in an effort to identify cross-cultural consistencies in the treatment of the dead. An analysis of the meaning and motivations behind these rituals reveals that they serve similar functions in both societies. Death provokes intense emotions of grief and long periods of mourning, which can debilitate the people who knew the deceased and even the society itself. Therefore, to promote survival of individuals and the community, mortuary rituals must address these disturbances. Focusing on ancient Egypt and modern America, this study finds that mortuary practices function to restabilize society …
The Political Aesthetic Of Hannah Arendt: Modernity, Judgment, And Culture, Quixote R. Vassilakis
The Political Aesthetic Of Hannah Arendt: Modernity, Judgment, And Culture, Quixote R. Vassilakis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The plan of this thesis is, first, to interpret Arendt’s critique of the modern age. Next, this paper outlines Arendt’s reconceptualization of Kant’s theory of judgment as the basis for a novel model of the public sphere in light of the conditions of modernity. Finally, this paper explores Arendt’s poetics as a means of activating the faculty of judgment in order to reconcile with the modern world. In order to address the political crises of modernity, Arendt develops a political aesthetic alive to the role of narrative and culture in reconstituting political communities. I argue that Hannah Arendt develops a …
Coping With Intergenerational Conflict Among Chinese Canadian Emerging Adults: Testing A Cultural And Contextual Model With A Mixed-Methods Approach, Siqi Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined coping with intergenerational conflict in Chinese Canadian emerging adults who were permanent residents or citizens of Canada. A mixed-methods design was used; 218 participants completed online questionnaires and 10 participants completed 50-minute individual interviews. In line with previous research, intergenerational conflict was negatively associated with psychological, physical, and relational well-being in Chinese Canadian emerging adults. Engagement coping and private emotional outlets mediated the relation between intergenerational conflict and well-being. Lower intergenerational conflict severity was related to more engagement coping, which was associated with greater well-being. Conversely, higher intergenerational conflict was associated with more usage of private emotional …
Improved Regional Education Delivery: Reach For The North Program, Elizabeth Anne Sommerfeld
Improved Regional Education Delivery: Reach For The North Program, Elizabeth Anne Sommerfeld
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) has outlined the change plan for a problem of practice for consideration of the education mandate at MY-U’s multiple regional campuses. The overall goal of this plan is to have increased the availability of academically rigorous courses for our regional students. An assessment of the readiness of several stakeholders allowed for a student-centred focus within the political, collegial and organized anarchy paradigms in which the university organization exists. A strategy is discussed to address issues in the administration and university culture while breaking down silos for the multiple campuses. A new organizational framework is offered …
Addressing Early Attrition In The Navy, Liza A. Sprang
Addressing Early Attrition In The Navy, Liza A. Sprang
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
The Naval Training System (NTS) is the authority for training across the Navy, responsible for trainees until the completion of their on-the-job training (OJT) or ‘apprenticeship’ at sea. An emerging challenge are the rising rates of trainee attrition during OJT. Surveys indicate that trainees are motivated to go to sea, ready to apply their knowledge and skills (NTS, 2016, 2018); however, an increasing number of trainees are opting not to complete their OJT (MP, 2017). With new ships in production and the fleet returned from refit, the modern Navy is facing an unprecedented period of growth and with it, the …
A Case Study In Revolutionary Change: From High School To Missionary Training Center, Shawn R. Cates
A Case Study In Revolutionary Change: From High School To Missionary Training Center, Shawn R. Cates
Theses and Dissertations
This article focuses on a case study in revolutionary change. A private school in Mexico City that had functioned for 49 years under the educational arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints underwent a change in mission, purpose, structure, function, and administration in eight months. Research about organizational change contains many conceptual models and principles intended to guide an organization through large-scale change. However, this change occurred without any strict reliance on a specific change model. This qualitative study is directed at empirically discovering what main factors led to success rather than relying on anecdotal assumptions. The …
Closing The Culture Gap: Student Language Competencies For The Assessment Of Patients In A Bilingual Health Care Setting, Midori Derome-Pinto
Closing The Culture Gap: Student Language Competencies For The Assessment Of Patients In A Bilingual Health Care Setting, Midori Derome-Pinto
The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
In a bilingual health care institution, how can specialized practitioners improve students’ administration of standardized assessments in neuropsychology to French-speaking patients in the absence of language competencies, in alignment with the cultures of both patient-centered care and efficiency? This OIP was developed for a Canadian bilingual health care institution, operating in alignment with political and legal language service and patient care obligations. However, increasing demand for services and professional language competency coupled with reduced funding has led to efficiency-focused departmental practices. Challenges in balancing a culture of efficacy and efficiency with the culture of patient-centered care and bilingualism have led …

Theses
Living in very dynamic and uncertain times, we can witness the power and the necessity of utilizing creativity and innovation as they can provide solutions to complex problems. However, how we see and define creativity is influenced by many factors, and culture is one of them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of culture on creativity conceptualization. Specifically, the objective was to find out whether the working professionals of Croatia and the working professionals of the United Arab Emirates view creativity differently. In order to investigate this, a cross-sectional study involving 109 participants from Croatia and …
Picasso Baby: Hearing Jay-Z Through The Ears Of Gramsci Or How Language Has The Power To Effect Change, Jon Cotner
Picasso Baby: Hearing Jay-Z Through The Ears Of Gramsci Or How Language Has The Power To Effect Change, Jon Cotner
Culminating Projects in English
Language was a pivotal element in the life of Italian Antonio Gramsci and his ability to harness its power made him one of the foremost cultural theorists and Marxist thinkers; likewise, American rapper JAY-Z also employed language to transcend childhood boundaries and become one of the most influential and wealthy entertainers of the twenty-first century. This study examines the lyrics of several albums that span the artistic career of JAY-Z and teases out the hegemonic clues that they contain. American hegemony is populated by one-percenters, an exclusive club that now counts JAY-Z as a member, but his membership was not …
What Germany Taught The U.S. Army: Occupational Lessons In Postwar Germany, 1945-1946, Jessica Lynn Buisman
What Germany Taught The U.S. Army: Occupational Lessons In Postwar Germany, 1945-1946, Jessica Lynn Buisman
History Theses
The study of the U.S.-occupation of Germany after the Second World War is not complete without understanding its role in changing the culture of the U.S. Army. Statesmen at the wartime conferences determined what policies the Army should implement in Germany, but these proved to be too impossible for the U.S. Army to carry out. The military directive, JCS 1067, emphasized denazification, democratization, and reeducation. U.S. policymakers in Washington envisioned U.S. troops executing these policies without hesitation. This expectation proved faulty as the occupation entered its first year. Denazification, democratization, and reeducation each failed due to a lack of communication, …
Try The Wine: Food As An Expression Of Cultural Identity In Roman Britain, Molly Reininger
Try The Wine: Food As An Expression Of Cultural Identity In Roman Britain, Molly Reininger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research surrounding cultural identity and food customs throughout history are published often, but any research that attempts to combine the two are often based in more recent history. Few combinations of the two are available, and fewer explore the implications within ancient colonization and expansion.
The research for this thesis was conducted with three viewpoints in mind: the colonization of Britannia from Romans within the new colony, the colonization from the native Briton's perspective, and the Roman citizens within Britannia at the end of Rome's military involvement with the colony. This method was chosen because in the early years of …

Medical Model Vs. Eco-Behavioral Model: School Psychologists’ Conceptualization Of Consultation, Patricia Y. Hanson
Medical Model Vs. Eco-Behavioral Model: School Psychologists’ Conceptualization Of Consultation, Patricia Y. Hanson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which school psychologists conceptualize culturally responsive consultation based on their description of using an ecological approach or an intrapsychic approach to consultation. Additionally, this study aimed to address barriers school psychologists may face when providing culturally responsive consultation based on the consultation method they describe using. I conducted a secondary analysis of 1 to 2-hour, semi-structured interviews of 15 school psychologists throughout the United States. I used a constructivist paradigm to understand participants’ approaches to consultation and how these approaches related to their descriptions of culturally responsive consultation. I …
Cultural Heritage And User Interface Design, Narges Tavakoli
Cultural Heritage And User Interface Design, Narges Tavakoli
LSU Master's Theses
This study centers around localizing the user interface and experience design of digital products considering the culture of the audience and their visual heritage. Even though it seems the internet has made the distance between developing and advanced countries less than before, there are still fundamental differences between people’s beliefs and expectations. As a graphic designer who is based in The United States and is from Iran, I noticed the digital products (web, mobile applications) produced in Iran disregard the Iranian’s specific needs and emulate western patterns. So, I researched the dissimilarities between the two countries by using Greet Hofstede’s …

Clothes Make The (Wo)Man: Gender Performed Through Fashion As An Agent Of Socialization, Madison Altman
Clothes Make The (Wo)Man: Gender Performed Through Fashion As An Agent Of Socialization, Madison Altman
Honors Theses
Clothing is a social product, carries social meanings, and modifies social interaction, thus making it into the system of symbols known as fashion. This thesis focuses on fashion as a social agent, with its artistic expression and continual reorganization of styles. I question if fashion has the power to exact social change, or whether it simply reinforces and reproduces social inequality. The thesis looks at how race, class, sexual orientation, and ethnicity are both articulated and challenged through gendered fashion. We will examine the relationship between fashion, clothing, the body and body image, how fashion is a system that can …

Into The West And Back Out Again: An Examination Of Cultural And Social Exchange In The Gilded Age United States, Samantha Mcdonald
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to provide a historical analysis of American culture and society at the turn of the twentieth-century, challenging the conceptualization of social isolation, cultural subjectivity, and urban conflict of the rural Midwest. Detailed research utilizes a synthesized mixture of primary sources, contemporary to the Gilded Age, and a volume of scholastic analysis of Midwestern and American history to establish the significance of rural, Midwest communities in the development of social and cultural standards in the United States. A flipped historical focus shifts the rural Midwest from an urban periphery to the center and nexus of …
The Cycle Continues: The Effects Of Intergenerational Trauma On The Sense Of Self And The Healing Opportunities Of Dance/Movement Therapy: A Literature Review, Nora Buonagurio
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis illuminates the far-reaching impact of intergenerational trauma on the sense of self, and the implications for dance/movement therapy in healing from intergenerational trauma. Intergenerational trauma (otherwise known as transgenerational trauma, historical trauma, and cultural trauma) is trauma that is passed down from generation to generation. Future generations experience their ancestors’ traumatic experiences as if it were their own, hijacking their sense of self and identity. Sense of self will be defined as feeling secure in who you are—sense of identity, personality, family background, aspirations, and semblance of having control in your life. Intergenerational trauma presents unique challenges …
The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva
The Embodiment Of Culture: How Anthropology Informs The Practice Of Dance/Movement Therapy, Carlie Silva
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The field of anthropology – the study of human culture – has much to contribute to understanding the practice of dance/movement therapy (DMT) from a culturally-informed vantage point. We exist in an epoch of expressive arts therapy where multicultural competency is becoming increasingly emphasized. Yet, culture’s grasp goes beyond its influence on the way people understand their world – it also shapes how people come to understand and make meaning with their bodies. This thesis reviews five categories of literature: 1) the influence of culture on the construction of the embodied “self”; 2) the influence of culture on movement tendencies …
Building Meaningful Relationships With Students, Amanda Brown
Building Meaningful Relationships With Students, Amanda Brown
Education | Master's Theses
Elementary school classrooms are becoming more diverse and there is a growing need for educators to be culturally responsive to students and to understand what that means. The challenge we face is to support educators in implementing strategies to acknowledge student names, welcome students into the classroom and create an environment in which students want to be a part. Studies have shown that naming practices are an important topic in diverse classrooms, as some students with Non-Eurocentric names are being “renamed”, and as a result, lose a part of their identity. To best support these students, researchers recommend student-centered teaching …
