Correlation-Based Analytics In Big Data, Nooshin Hamidian Hamidian Dec 2019

Correlation-Based Analytics In Big Data, Nooshin Hamidian Hamidian

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we aim to investigate the application of correlation-based analytics in three main areas including marketing, healthcare, and manufacturing through three separate, but inherently related studies, and utilize data analytics and optimization methods to develop novel solutions or improve the currently available methods.First, we demonstrate the significance of items correlation in a product bundling problem. We address a product bundling problem from a data-driven perspective and model bundling utility from a retailer with a wide range of items perspective (such as Walmart, Kroger, Amazon, and so on so forth.) Utilizing the utility model, we mathematically show under which …

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy Dec 2019

Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy

Senior Theses

The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.

The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.

This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications …

Estimation Of Correlation Confidence Intervals Via The Bootstrap: Non-Normal Distributions, John Mart V. Delosreyes Oct 2019

Estimation Of Correlation Confidence Intervals Via The Bootstrap: Non-Normal Distributions, John Mart V. Delosreyes

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Estimating confidence intervals (CIs) for the correlation has been a challenge. The challenge stems from the metamorphic nature of the sampling distribution of the correlation being bound by-1≤ρ≤1. The nonparametric nature of the bootstrap makes it a good option for estimating correlation CIs. However, there have been mixed results about the robustness of bootstrap CIs for the correlation with non normal data. This had led the literature to suggesting the use of transformation methods to estimate correlation CIs. However, transformation methods carry a risk of the original data being misrepresented. Thus, further investigation of bootstrap CIs for the correlation is …

Conditional Roc Curves For A Paired Case-Control Design, Yalda Zarnegarnia Jul 2019

Conditional Roc Curves For A Paired Case-Control Design, Yalda Zarnegarnia

Open Access Dissertations

Many areas of research involve the analysis of correlated biomarker data. Correlated biomarker data arise from study designs including subjects that contain shared genetic or environmental factors. In a familial-matched design, the information about correlation might help to identify family members at increased risk of disease development and may lead to initiating treatment to slow or stop disease progression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves have been widely used in medical research to illustrate the performance of a biomarker in correctly distinguishing between diseased and non-diseased groups. Approaches appropriate to a familial-matched case-control design should accommodate inherent correlation in correctly estimating …

Assess Material Properties Of Concrete Using Combined Ndt Methods, Abhishek Chitti May 2019

Assess Material Properties Of Concrete Using Combined Ndt Methods, Abhishek Chitti

Theses

The aim of this research is to assess the material properties of concrete like modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and Poisson’s ratio using various nondestructive Testing (NDT) methods like Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and Rebound Hammer (RH). Assessment of material properties of concrete is very important as they are used for structural design process. Various NDT methods are applied to ensure the quality of concrete specimens but they can also be used to find material properties. UPV is a NDT method which is used to test the internal condition of the concrete specimen. RH is a surface hardness testing method …

Design Of Random And Stationary Sources And Media For Structuring Light On Propagation And Scattering, Jia Li Apr 2019

Design Of Random And Stationary Sources And Media For Structuring Light On Propagation And Scattering, Jia Li

Open Access Dissertations

The dissertation incorporates a series of investigations relating to the design of coherence states for stationary, random sources, and correlation functions of spatially random, stationary media, for modulation of far fields radiated or scattered from them to the far zone, and, hence, for structuring of any observable statistical properties. In particular, we reveal how the coherence states of sources affect their far-zone radiated properties, including the spectral density, the scintillation index, and the intensity correlation function. Furthermore, we also present results that address how the spatial structuring of the refractive index correlation function of a three-dimensional (3D) medium influences the …

Measuring Regulatory And Noncompliance Prevalence Among Maryland Commercial Blue Crab Fishers, Jacquelyn Lee Rachor Hornsby Jan 2019

Measuring Regulatory And Noncompliance Prevalence Among Maryland Commercial Blue Crab Fishers, Jacquelyn Lee Rachor Hornsby

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Few empirical studies exist that compare regulation (R) and fishing crime (VL). The lack of information about R and VL effects stakeholder decision-making. Crime weakens conservation efforts and creates false baseline data. This furthers R and the cycle repeats. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the statistical association between the number and type of annual commercial blue crab R and VL of the same. The Pearson's R correlation was used to analyze the data because it demonstrated the strength of each relationship. This quantitative study was grounded in enforcement theory. The data was public record and consisted …

Removing Vehicle Speed From Apparent Wind Velocity, Austin M. Weiss Jan 2019

Removing Vehicle Speed From Apparent Wind Velocity, Austin M. Weiss

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Variable-rate technologies for sprayer applications stand to increase efficacy by ensuring the right amount of chemical is applied at the right location. However, external environmental factors such as droplet drift caused by variable ambient condition, are not yet integrated into modern sprayer systems. Real-time wind velocity measurements can be used to control droplet spectra for reducing spray drift by actuating a variable-orifice nozzle. This work aimed to develop data processing methods needed to filter noise and remove vehicle speed from wind velocity measurements collected with an ultrasonic anemometer aboard a moving platform. Using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), vehicle …

Lack Of Vaccination Risks, Abigail Sebunia Jan 2019

Lack Of Vaccination Risks, Abigail Sebunia

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper is a study regarding how vaccination rates are related to the number of measles cases that occur in a particular state. First, I will review the history of vaccines and the motivations for the refusals of this medical procedure. In addition, I will examine the various regulations regarding vaccinations and which states allow non-medical exemptions for religious or personal reasons. Within my analysis, I will provide examples of recent outbreaks to represent the extent of this current dilemma. Furthermore, I will offer potential solutions to mitigate measles outbreaks and the science regarding Herd Immunity Thresholds (HIT) to limit …
