One of the main tasks of modern schools is the development of children's creative potential and the formation of socially significant personal qualities. At school, they should not receive ready-made knowledge, but a model of adaptation to rapidly changing conditions. According to a number of psychological and pedagogical indicators, the chess game is an ideal explanatory model that allows students to form skills for successfully solving practice-oriented problems. Our research is devoted to revealing the didactic possibilities of this explanatory model, where the authors define approaches to the content interpretation and content of the concept of "didactic potential of chess", …

In this study, we aim to investigate the application of correlation-based analytics in three main areas including marketing, healthcare, and manufacturing through three separate, but inherently related studies, and utilize data analytics and optimization methods to develop novel solutions or improve the currently available methods.First, we demonstrate the significance of items correlation in a product bundling problem. We address a product bundling problem from a data-driven perspective and model bundling utility from a retailer with a wide range of items perspective (such as Walmart, Kroger, Amazon, and so on so forth.) Utilizing the utility model, we mathematically show under which …
Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy
Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy
Senior Theses
The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.
The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.
This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications …
Genome-Wide Computational Identification Of Biologically Significant Cis-Regulatory Elements And Associated Transcription Factors From Rice, Chai-Ling Ho, Matt Geisler
Genome-Wide Computational Identification Of Biologically Significant Cis-Regulatory Elements And Associated Transcription Factors From Rice, Chai-Ling Ho, Matt Geisler
Publications
The interactions between transcription factors (TFs) and cis-acting regulatory elements (CREs) provide crucial information on the regulation of gene expression. The determination of TF-binding sites and CREs experimentally is costly and time intensive. An in silico identification and annotation of TFs, and the prediction of CREs from rice are made possible by the availability of whole genome sequence and transcriptome data. In this study, we tested the applicability of two algorithms developed for other model systems for the identification of biologically significant CREs of co-expressed genes from rice. CREs were identified from the DNA sequences located upstream from the transcription …
Estimation Of Correlation Confidence Intervals Via The Bootstrap: Non-Normal Distributions, John Mart V. Delosreyes
Estimation Of Correlation Confidence Intervals Via The Bootstrap: Non-Normal Distributions, John Mart V. Delosreyes
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Estimating confidence intervals (CIs) for the correlation has been a challenge. The challenge stems from the metamorphic nature of the sampling distribution of the correlation being bound by-1≤ρ≤1. The nonparametric nature of the bootstrap makes it a good option for estimating correlation CIs. However, there have been mixed results about the robustness of bootstrap CIs for the correlation with non normal data. This had led the literature to suggesting the use of transformation methods to estimate correlation CIs. However, transformation methods carry a risk of the original data being misrepresented. Thus, further investigation of bootstrap CIs for the correlation is …

High-Temperature Performance Of Polymer-Modified Asphalt Mixes: Preliminary Evaluation Of The Usefulness Of Standard Technical Index In Polymer-Modified Asphalt., Kezhen Yan, Lingyun You, Daocheng Wang
Michigan Tech Publications
The objectives of this study are to evaluate the high-temperature performance of polymer-modified asphalt and asphalt mixtures, and to investigate if the standard technical indexes are useful in the performance evaluation of the polymer-modified asphalt. There are four typically used polymer-modified asphalt types employed in the study. The standard high-temperature rheological test, such as the temperature sweep test, was used to express the high-temperature performance of the polymer-modified asphalt. Also, considering the non-Newtonian fluid properties of the polymer-modified asphalt, the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) and zero-shear viscosity (ZSV) tests were employed for the characterizations. Besides, based on the mixture …

Diagnostic Analysis Of Random Vibration Results In The Aviation Gas Turbine Enginespulse-Width Automatic Control Systems Based On Dynamic Graphs, G. Sh. Tuganov, C. M. Rakhimov, E. Norkulov
Technical science and innovation
Studies are often conducted to minimize the effect of vibration on equipment and its mechanisms. Since the engine is the main driving force of all technical objects, vibration is one of the factors hindering its operation. With this in mind, this article investigated the random probability distribution of vibration parameters using the laws of mathematical statistical distribution and was found to be compatible with the normal distribution law. At the same time, this study demonstrates that the proposed method of technical diagnostics can be used to assess helicopter engine failures.

High-Precision Radioisotopic Ages For The Lower Midian (Upper Wordian) Stage Of The Tethyan Time Scale, Shigeyasu Quarry, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, V. I. Davydov, M. D. Schmitz
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Global correlation of strata to the Guadalupian Series (Permian Period) of the International Geologic Time Scale remains provisional due to a lack of the sufficient biostratigraphically constrained radioisotopic ages. Five new high-precision U–Pb radioisotopic ages were obtained from tuffs in the lower Midian (upper Wordian) volcano-siliciclastic succession of the Akiyoshi Plateau, southwestern Japan. Two undisturbed and continuous tuffs occur within fusulinid-bearing laminated limestone turbidites, with precise biostratigraphic control. The Colania douvillei and Lepidolina shiraiwensis fusulinid Zones in the Akiyoshi succession provide an early Midian age in the Tethyan provincial time scale. The range of ages (267.46 ± 0.04 Ma to …

The current two-step clustering methods separately learn the similarity matrix and conduct k means clustering. Moreover, the similarity matrix is learnt from the original data, which usually contain noise. As a consequence, these clustering methods cannot achieve good clustering results. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new graph clustering methods (namely Low-rank Sparse Subspace clustering (LSS)) to simultaneously learn the similarity matrix and conduct the clustering from the low-dimensional feature space of the original data. Specifically, the proposed LSS integrates the learning of similarity matrix of the original feature space, the learning of similarity matrix of the low-dimensional …
Conditional Roc Curves For A Paired Case-Control Design, Yalda Zarnegarnia
Conditional Roc Curves For A Paired Case-Control Design, Yalda Zarnegarnia
Open Access Dissertations
Many areas of research involve the analysis of correlated biomarker data. Correlated biomarker data arise from study designs including subjects that contain shared genetic or environmental factors. In a familial-matched design, the information about correlation might help to identify family members at increased risk of disease development and may lead to initiating treatment to slow or stop disease progression. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves have been widely used in medical research to illustrate the performance of a biomarker in correctly distinguishing between diseased and non-diseased groups. Approaches appropriate to a familial-matched case-control design should accommodate inherent correlation in correctly estimating …

Analysis Of Sprint Start Transition Phases And Their Associations With Performance, Steffi L. Colyer, Philip Graham-Smith, Aki I.T. Salo
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The sprint start consists of three transitions defined by the instants the hands, rear leg and front leg leave the ground, which delimit three phases. Ground reaction forces produced by 57 sprinters during the block phase were analysed to investigate the performance (average horizontal external power) implications of transition timing and the force production and centre of mass (CM) displacements between them. Better sprint starters exhibited higher horizontal (r = 0.47 for phase two), but lower vertical (r = -0.40), CM displacement across shorter time periods. Additionally, more horizontally-orientated force vectors to reduce CM projection angle at each …

Richard Nisbett. 2015. Mindware: Tools for Smart Thinking.(New York, NY: Farrar, Strauss, and Giroux). 336 pp. ISBN: 9780374536244
Nisbett, a psychologist, may not achieve his stated goal of teaching readers to “effortlessly” extend their common sense when it comes to quantitative analysis applied to everyday issues, but his critique of multiple regression analysis (MRA) in the middle chapters of Mindware is worth attention from, and contemplation by, the QL/QR and Numeracy community. While in at least one other source, Nisbett’s critique has been called a “crusade” against MRA, what he really advocates is that it not be used as …

The Relationship Of Christian Education To Adolescent Students' Biblical Worldview, Jason G. Nave
The Relationship Of Christian Education To Adolescent Students' Biblical Worldview, Jason G. Nave
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Our worldview affects all things in our lives – even our education. Every education has a founding premise or bias which either espouses a biblical worldview or does not. In addition to the factual content, it is typically delivered or taught by someone with a particular premise or bias. Perspectives vary from person to person, and therefore, so can what they believe to be true. The need for true knowledge to be imparted in an absolutely true context is necessary. Thus, there is the need for a biblical worldview to be established. This study is aimed at assessing the relationship, …

Accelerating 3-D Gpu-Based Motion Tracking For Ultrasound Strain Elastography Using Sum-Tables: Analysis And Initial Results., Bo Peng, Shasha Luo, Zhengqiu Xu, Jingfeng Jiang
Michigan Tech Publications
Now, with the availability of 3-D ultrasound data, a lot of research efforts are being devoted to developing 3-D ultrasound strain elastography (USE) systems. Because 3-D motion tracking, a core component in any 3-D USE system, is computationally intensive, a lot of efforts are under way to accelerate 3-D motion tracking. In the literature, the concept of Sum-Table has been used in a serial computing environment to reduce the burden of computing signal correlation, which is the single most computationally intensive component in 3-D motion tracking. In this study, parallel programming using graphics processing units (GPU) is used in conjunction …

The aim of this research is to assess the material properties of concrete like modulus of elasticity, compressive strength, and Poisson’s ratio using various nondestructive Testing (NDT) methods like Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and Rebound Hammer (RH). Assessment of material properties of concrete is very important as they are used for structural design process. Various NDT methods are applied to ensure the quality of concrete specimens but they can also be used to find material properties. UPV is a NDT method which is used to test the internal condition of the concrete specimen. RH is a surface hardness testing method …
Understanding Volatility: An Analysis Of The Stock Market Return-Variance Correlation, Richard Traub
Understanding Volatility: An Analysis Of The Stock Market Return-Variance Correlation, Richard Traub
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper attempts to explain the negative correlation between stock market returns in the United States (measured by the risk premium of the S&P 500 Index) and the respective volatility of these returns. The academic research regarding two primary schools of thought on this issue, the volatility feedback effect and the leverage effect, is furthered as potential explanations for this phenomenon. A tertiary explanation relating to investor behavior is also explored as a viable cause. In order to empirically study this relationship, I examine the risk premium quintiles and the corresponding CBOE Volatility Index levels for the time-series dating from …
Design Of Random And Stationary Sources And Media For Structuring Light On Propagation And Scattering, Jia Li
Open Access Dissertations
The dissertation incorporates a series of investigations relating to the design of coherence states for stationary, random sources, and correlation functions of spatially random, stationary media, for modulation of far fields radiated or scattered from them to the far zone, and, hence, for structuring of any observable statistical properties. In particular, we reveal how the coherence states of sources affect their far-zone radiated properties, including the spectral density, the scintillation index, and the intensity correlation function. Furthermore, we also present results that address how the spatial structuring of the refractive index correlation function of a three-dimensional (3D) medium influences the …

Examining Parental Stress in Incarcerated Setting
Henson, C., Williamson, A., Holland, T., & Tiano, J.
The majority of literature on incarcerated parenting styles and parental stress has focused primarily on mothers, with very little research conducted with fathers. Research has found that mothers report more parenting stress on the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) than fathers. In response to limited research in this area, the current study used preliminary data from a larger study to examine the correlation between parenting stress and various demographic variables (i.e. age, number of children, number of contact hours with children while incarcerated, number of contact …

Methods:Charts for all patients assigned to receive TAVR procedure at St Mary’s medical center, Huntington, West Virginia between April, 2013 till November, 2016 were identified and reviewed. A total of seventy-two (72) cases were included.
Results: All cause mortality rate at index hospitalization, 30 days, and 12 months was 5.6%(N=4), 6.9%(N=5), 19.4%(N=14) respectively. Stroke …
Robustly Optimal Reserve Price, Wei He, Jiangtao Li
Robustly Optimal Reserve Price, Wei He, Jiangtao Li
Research Collection School Of Economics
We study a robust version of the single-unit auction problem. The auctioneer has confidence in her estimate of the marginal distribution of a generic bidder's valuation, but does not have reliable information about the joint distribution. In this setting, we analyze the performance of second-price auctions with reserve prices in terms of revenue guarantee, that is, the greatest lower bound of revenue across all joint distributions that are consistent with the marginals. For any finite number of bidders, we solve for the robustly optimal reserve price that generates the highest revenue guarantee. Our analysis has interesting implications in large markets. …
Agreement Among Six Methods Of Predicting The Anaerobic Lactate Threshold In Elite Cross-Country Skiers, Sean L. Carter, Ian Newhouse
Agreement Among Six Methods Of Predicting The Anaerobic Lactate Threshold In Elite Cross-Country Skiers, Sean L. Carter, Ian Newhouse
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 155-172, 2019. The anaerobic lactate threshold (LTan) is used to prescribe training intensity and measure endurance capacity. The LTan identifies a critical point where small increases in workload result in large increases in blood lactate concentration. LTan is usually predicted through visual inspection of a blood lactate (bLa) vs workload plot. Numerous other methods for predicting LTan exist, and the literature lacks a consensus regarding validity of prediction methods. The purpose of this study was to assess the agreement among visual inspection (VI), maximum distance (Dmax) and modified maximum distance (Dmod) from the lactate …

Measuring Regulatory And Noncompliance Prevalence Among Maryland Commercial Blue Crab Fishers, Jacquelyn Lee Rachor Hornsby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Few empirical studies exist that compare regulation (R) and fishing crime (VL). The lack of information about R and VL effects stakeholder decision-making. Crime weakens conservation efforts and creates false baseline data. This furthers R and the cycle repeats. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the statistical association between the number and type of annual commercial blue crab R and VL of the same. The Pearson's R correlation was used to analyze the data because it demonstrated the strength of each relationship. This quantitative study was grounded in enforcement theory. The data was public record and consisted …

Accurate And Compact Stochastic Computations By Exploiting Correlation, Hamdan Abdellatef, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Nasir Shaikh-Husin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Recent studies have shown, contrary to what was previously believed, that by exploiting correlation in stochastic computing (SC) designs, more accurate SC circuits with low area cost can be realized. However, if these basic SC circuits or blocks are cascaded in series to form a large complex system, correlation between stochastic numbers (SNs) from one block to the next would be lost; thus, inaccuracies are introduced. In this study, we propose correlating circuits to be used in building complex correlated SC systems. One of the circuits is the correlator that restores lost correlations between two SNs due to previous processing. …
Removing Vehicle Speed From Apparent Wind Velocity, Austin M. Weiss
Removing Vehicle Speed From Apparent Wind Velocity, Austin M. Weiss
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Variable-rate technologies for sprayer applications stand to increase efficacy by ensuring the right amount of chemical is applied at the right location. However, external environmental factors such as droplet drift caused by variable ambient condition, are not yet integrated into modern sprayer systems. Real-time wind velocity measurements can be used to control droplet spectra for reducing spray drift by actuating a variable-orifice nozzle. This work aimed to develop data processing methods needed to filter noise and remove vehicle speed from wind velocity measurements collected with an ultrasonic anemometer aboard a moving platform. Using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS), vehicle …
