The Impact Of Experimentally-Induced Perceived Discrimination On Substance Use, Kimberlye Elise Dean Nov 2019

The Impact Of Experimentally-Induced Perceived Discrimination On Substance Use, Kimberlye Elise Dean

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are among the most debilitating psychiatric disorders. Although prevalence rates of SUDs are similar between White and Black adults, these groups experience differential treatment outcomes (e.g., Black adults with SUDs are more likely to report greater pre- and post-treatment substance use). Examining culture-specific correlates of racial differences in substance use is vital to improve understanding of the etiological and maintaining mechanisms of SUDs among Black adults. Perceived racial discrimination (PRD) is prospectively related to various substance use-related outcomes. Thus, some may use substances to alleviate psychological distress (e.g., anxiety) associated with PRD, which may over time …

Rich In Needs: The Forgotten Radical Politics Of The Welfare Rights Movement, Wilson Sherwin Sep 2019

Rich In Needs: The Forgotten Radical Politics Of The Welfare Rights Movement, Wilson Sherwin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Situated temporally between the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Movement, the Welfare Rights Movement of the 1960s and 70s distinguished itself by its militant critique of waged labor. Returning to the movement’s archives I examine how the mostly poor, Black, female participants developed their “antiwork politics”, how they asserted their right to live not only meager but occasionally luxurious lives—demanding not only bread but also roses. In the courts, streets, welfare offices, department stores, policy proposals, and numerous internal debates, these women waged national battles to assert full autonomy over their families, consumption, sexuality, and their own time.

Increasing The Effectiveness Of A Social Emotional Learning Program Through Cultural Adaptation For African American Students’ Internalizing Symptoms, Courteney Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

Cultural adaptation is a mechanism used to increase the congruency of evidence-based interventions when delivered to a specific ethnic-cultural group. While initially conceptualized in response to the lack of support of evidence-based treatments with ethnic minorities, research identifying unique risk and protective factors for minority groups, as well as poor participant engagement and a lower utilization of mental health services as compared to Caucasian youth, provide additional support for the cultural adaptation of interventions. This study compared the results of a school-based social emotional curriculum culturally adapted for African American youth to a non-adapted intervention. The study analyzed participants’ overall …

Campus Racial Climate And Academic Outcomes: Examining The Moderating Role Of Racial Identity For African American College Students, Allana Zuckerman May 2019

Campus Racial Climate And Academic Outcomes: Examining The Moderating Role Of Racial Identity For African American College Students, Allana Zuckerman

Psychology Dissertations

Campus racial climate, including individual perceptions of interracial interactions between students and with faculty (Hurtado, Griffin, Arellano & Cuellar, 2008). African American students often report more discriminatory perceptions of campus racial climate than White, Latino and Asian American students (e.g., Reid & Radhakrishnan, 2003). Campus racial climate has implications for a range of academic outcomes during college (e.g., Fischer, 2010; Torregosa, Ynalvez, & Morin, 2015). Specifically, Black students report experiencing hostile racial climates on their college campuses from both peers and professors and this can influence academic outcomes such as student motivation (e.g., Byrd, 2015), GPA (Torregosa et al., 2015) …

Modulation Of Estrogen Metabolism And Prevention Of Pathologies, Bodhisattwa Mondal May 2019

Modulation Of Estrogen Metabolism And Prevention Of Pathologies, Bodhisattwa Mondal

Theses & Dissertations

Estrogens have been implicated in non-cancerous pathologies such as Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD), and accumulating evidence suggests estrogen genotoxicity leads to initiation of multiple types of cancer among Caucasian populations. These studies were mono-racial, and restoration of estrogen metabolism imbalance using naturally occurring compounds were not definitive. Therefore, the role of estrogen metabolism in FECD, in cancer initiation among African American (AA) populations, its modulation by environmental toxicant arsenic trioxide (As2O3), and by antioxidants polydatin (PD) and resveratrol were explored.

In human breast epithelial non-transformed MCF10A cells, As2O3 – induced cytotoxicity was …

There have been numerous works on segregation and desegregation in Mississippi schools. However, much of that research focuses on schools that are in cities, not rural areas. A Mixed Methods Approach To Study The Effects Of A Naturalist Summer Program On The Perceptions Of African American Children About Nature, Kendrick Buford

Dissertations

African Americans have been reported to have a more negative outlook on nature than people of other races. Much work has been done to explain this phenomenon through the lenses of social and environmental justice. However, most of this information pertains to adults, and little to no exploration has been done to understand how children could be affected. This lack of information creates a novel research topic. This study addressed the problem using a mixed method analysis to better understand both the narrative of the children and any generalizable conclusions to better understand their attitudes in a summer program titled …
