This paper examines the themes of human perception and participation within the contemporary paradigm and relates the hallmarks of the major paradigm shift which occurred in the mid-20th century from a structural view of the world to a systems view. In this context, the author’s creative practice is described, outlining a methodology for working with the communication networks and interpersonal feedback loops that help to define our relationships to each other and to media since that paradigm shift. Motion-Contacto is an exhibition of fourteen interactive ceramic sculptures and one video. The title references movement with the word Motion and the act of touching with the Spanish word Contacto. Viewers can play with the pieces and create sounds. The colors and organic shapes of the objects invite the public to approach and touch them. The sounds produced by interacting with the work will entice the viewers to explore the possibilities of physical interaction.

Nam June Paik As A Pioneer Of Interactive Art, Byeongwon Ha

Nam June Paik (1932-2006) is well known as the father of video art. However, this study demonstrates the importance of his earlier interactive art (1961-63), which historically has been overshadowed by his video art. At the climax of his career in interactive art, Paik introduced his two-way art to the public at his first solo exhibition in Wuppertal, West Germany, in 1963. Interactive art itself has been a peripheral area in the history of art, and it has plural pioneers across disciplinary boundaries.
