Eying Italians: Race, Romance, And Reality In American Perception, 1880--1910, Joseph Peter Cosco

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation explores how American representations of Italians and Italian Americans engaged, reflected and helped shape the United States' developing concepts of immigration, ethnicity, race, and national identity from 1880 to 1910, when masses of Italian and other "new immigrants" rigorously tested the country's attitudes and powers of assimilation. In a larger sense, the research examines how the process of constructing the modern Italian/Italian American was part of the process of America constructing for itself a modern national identity for a new century.;The dissertation looks at a variety of "texts," including journalism, travel literature, autobiography, fiction, and photographs and illustrations …

Alien Land Laws : The Curtailing Of Japanese Agricultural Pursuits In Oregon, Amy K. Buck Jan 1999

Alien Land Laws : The Curtailing Of Japanese Agricultural Pursuits In Oregon, Amy K. Buck

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes the evolution and demise of Oregon's alien land laws of 1923 and 1945 and their impact on the Nikkei community and the state's culture.

After a brief discussion of Japanese immigration to Oregon and their lifestyle, the work discusses the emergence of discrimination against Japanese residents. At the same time, it outlines how the Nikkei adopted creative responses to the law. This thesis then explores the manner by which anti-Japanese internment policies during World War II shattered the Issei community, revoking many of the gains made in the previous half-century. The effects of the second alien land …

Marketing The Civil War Centennial: Atlanta, Charleston, And Richmond, Eric Wendell Leiden

Legacy ETDs

One of the most traumatic events in American history was the American Civil War. In 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and within six months, ten southern states, including Georgia and Virginia followed suit.1 These southern states fought against the northern states of the Union from April 12, 1861 until April 9, 1865. Finally, when the hostilities were concluded, the southern states rejoined the union. Unfortunately, in some ways, the hostilities never really subsided and remained in the minds of many Southerners.

In 1961, under the supervision of the National Civil War Centennial Commission, the United States began …

Astride Two Worlds: The Chinese Response To Changing Citizenship In Western Australia (1901-1973), Tian M. Cai

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Citizenship is central to understanding the nature of Chinese migrants and their relationships within the social and political environment in Australia. Utilising the concept of citizenship can be a new way to interpret the human experience of the Chinese survival in Australia and to show that a historical balance can be found between the Australian social environment on the one side and the Chinese experience in Australia on the other. How the Chinese community reacted to the changing issues in citizenship and attitudes towards Asian immigration become the focus of the thesis. This research is designed to ask how Chinese …

From Turnpikes To Railroads: Antebellum Transportation Improvements And Community Development In Taylor County, Virginia, Scott W. Daley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In the 1820s, a revolution in transportation technology changed forever the shipment of goods, travel, and the process of communication as overland transportation shifted from turnpikes to railroads. This study examines the affect on community formation and development in two turnpike villages and one town along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, America’s first inter-regional commercial railroad line. Between the mid-1830s and 1860, as railroads replaced turnpikes, the villages of Fetterman and Pruntytown, Virginia, came into existence, flourished, and began to decline as railroads passed along the lower Tygart River in 1850, directly competing with turnpikes. The town of Grafton in …
