Bow Use In The Great Basin, Andrew Ugan Dec 1992

Bow Use In The Great Basin, Andrew Ugan

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The bow and arrow is a tool with a very long history. In the Old World its use dates back to paleolithic times, with firm evidence in the form of arrow shafts dated to the early ninth millennium b.c. (McEwen, Miller, & Bergman, 1991). More tenuous evidence from projectile points in Africa may push that back as far as 11000 b.c. (Blitz, 1988). The focus of this paper, however, will be the adoption and subsequent use of the bow in the Great Basin region of the West.

Good To The Last Drop And Crumb: Better Living Through Yeast Byproducts, Brad Willis May 1992

Good To The Last Drop And Crumb: Better Living Through Yeast Byproducts, Brad Willis

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

A crisp pilsner beer, still dripping from its icy spot in the cooler, complements any sunny summer barbecue, while in the winter a rich burgundy warms the throat and soul, a perfect fireside companion. The mothers who frequent the Wonder bread discount outlet demonstrate to what extent our hectic society takes the staff of life for granted. It is difficult to imagine them actually baking every loaf, roll, bun, and donut that they toss into their carts while herding rambunctious broods down the narrow aisles. Rarely does anyone give a second thought to these ancient components of civilized life beyond …

The Glory Of Cambresis, Mark Anderson May 1992

The Glory Of Cambresis, Mark Anderson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the Sixteenth century, Paris dominated France as the economic, social, and political center of all that happened in the Western world. For a brief moment, at the close of the Habsburg-Valois War, a small and virtually insignificant town snatched away the center stage; the final negotiations for peace would take place in Cambresis. Each power involved in the treaty wanted to see a quick end to the war, but not at their own expense. France and Spain, the "superpowers" of the negotiations, struggled to come out on top, but while their differences appeared to take precedence over all else, …

Parental Attitudes Toward Using Inventive Spelling With Kindergarten Age Children, Sue Dearden May 1992

Parental Attitudes Toward Using Inventive Spelling With Kindergarten Age Children, Sue Dearden

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Across the United States millions of children are reciting spelling lists, participating in Spelling Bees, and taking spelling tests. In fact, a significant portion of an elementary child's school day is devoted to learning to spell words traditionally or correctly. With such an emphasis being placed on spelling, it is logical to assume spelling traditionally is valued in our society. However, a different philosophy, Whole Language, takes an opposite approach on how writing and spelling should be incorporated in the classroom. Whole Language focuses on children learning to write and read at the same time. The focus is not on …

The Proposed Use Of An Anatomically Marked Presurgically Fitted Prostheses With Infants Who Have Unrepaired Cleft Palates, Amy Moser May 1992

The Proposed Use Of An Anatomically Marked Presurgically Fitted Prostheses With Infants Who Have Unrepaired Cleft Palates, Amy Moser

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Approximately one out of every 750 children are born with some type of an oral cleft (McWilliams, Morris, & Shelton, 1984) Children with clefts of the palate in general have a higher incidence of articulation disorders than do children without clefts. Typical speech problems which tend to occur are hypernasality and multiple articulation errors, often consisting of atypical tongue placement in the mouth or nontypical articulation at sites in the larynx or pharynx. These speech problems can be severe and may require years of expensive, long-term professional treatment to remediate.

Augmentation Of Natural Populations Of Entomophagous Insects Through The Use Of Secondary Food Sources, John Swallow May 1992

Augmentation Of Natural Populations Of Entomophagous Insects Through The Use Of Secondary Food Sources, John Swallow

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Local densities of predators, including ladybeetles, parasitoids, big-eyed bugs, and minute pirate bugs, increased with the application of artificial honeydew, consisted of sugar and wheast dissolved in water. Sugar, rather than wheast, was the active ingredient causing predators to aggregate, although wheast prolonged the effect of the sugar treatment for the ladybeetles. Furthermore, the artificial honeydew treatments had a marked effect for a period of one week. These results suggest a potentially important role of the use of synthetic honeydew as a means of pest control in an Integrated Pest Management system.

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey May 1992

Facilitating Acceptance Of Alternative Communication Devices In Classrooms By Teachers, Tracie Empey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

There exists a number of persons who lack adequate speech for communicative purposes. Many of the non-vocal children and adults from these populations have benefitted from the development of various alternative communication devices. The non-vocal individual is one whose speech does not provide a functional means of meeting communication needs. However, this does not necessarily mean that the non-vocal individual has no speech or vocalization at all, nor does it mean that the individual may not develop fully functional speech in the future. (Vanderheiden, 1975). The devices used with these people allow an increase in the abilities to meet various …

A Comparison Of The Energy Metabolism And Cooling Rate Methods Of Determining Thermal Conductance In Mongolian Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus Mongolicus), Robert Pendleton May 1992

A Comparison Of The Energy Metabolism And Cooling Rate Methods Of Determining Thermal Conductance In Mongolian Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus Mongolicus), Robert Pendleton

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Thermal conductance is defined as the net rate of heat transfer from an organism to its environment. Previous studies have employed two methods of measuring thermal conductance: the oxygen consumption method and the cooling rate method. This study was designed to determine if the two methods give similar conductance values for the same animal. Mongolian Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus mongolicus) were used. The results from this study suggest that the two methods don't give similar conductance values. I found that conductance values measured by the oxygen consumption method on a live animal were lower than those conductance values measured by the …

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson May 1992

A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The nature of deity through out the history of philosophy has always been a subject of debate, from some of the earliest writings, philosophers and theologians have given arguments for and against the existence and nature of God. Beckwith and Parrish, in "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis," add another page to this on-going debate with their attack of the "Mormon concept of God." In the introduction Beckwith and Parrish explain that it is their aim to show

(1) that the Mormon concept of God differs radically from the classical concept of God,

(2) that the Mormon concept …

Affirmative Action And Utility Theory, Jennifer J. Clark

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Blacks have been discriminated against for many decades in the United States. In 1964, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was created to eliminate discrimination in hiring practices. Affirmative action plans were later implemented to create equity in places of employment. Both affirmative action and the EEOC were designed to create equality of the races and eliminate racial tension in the United States.

Bilingual Interpreter Paraprofessional Training Program In The Field Of Communicative Disorders, Susie Yoakum, Tyler Sorenson May 1992

Bilingual Interpreter Paraprofessional Training Program In The Field Of Communicative Disorders, Susie Yoakum, Tyler Sorenson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Because of the ever increasing number of non- (NEP) and Limited- (LEP) English Proficient persons in the United States, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) working in the public school setting is currently faced with the challenge of developing effective strategies for the assessment and identification of bilingual children with communicative disorders. One of the responsibilities of the SLP is to administer tests to children with suspected communicative disorders. However, it is difficult for a monolingual, English speaking SLP to effectively assess the speech and language of a non- or limited-English speaking child because of the language barrier that is present. In …

Assessing The Pre-School Classroom Environment For Facilitative Emergent Literacy Activities And Strategies, Maggie Harris Apr 1992

Assessing The Pre-School Classroom Environment For Facilitative Emergent Literacy Activities And Strategies, Maggie Harris

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In one of his educational goals for the nineties, President Bush declared that "By the year 2000, all children in America will start school ready to learn [i.e., in good health, having been read to and otherwise prepared by parents.]" (Elam, 1990, p. 41). By providing this particular goal, the President clearly emphasized the importance of the pre-school years for preparing children for school. Further, Elam interpreted this goal to mean that children must be prepared for school by their parents and that reading to children is one important factor in the child's readiness for learning.

The Use Of Animal Behavior As A Tool For Biological Control, Melissa Biscornet Apr 1992

The Use Of Animal Behavior As A Tool For Biological Control, Melissa Biscornet

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Animal behavior, the way that an animal acts, is a combination of instinctive traits and learned responses to particular situations (Robinson and Bolen 1984). Behavior in young animals involves several different learning mechanisms, including the following: generalization, social facilitation, neophobia, cue-consequence specificity, and harvesting skills. Preferences instilled in young animals through learning can influence diet selection, grazing patterns, and habitat selection later in life (Squibb et al. 1990)

On Descartes' Presuppositionless Philosophy, W. Tyler Johnson Mar 1992

On Descartes' Presuppositionless Philosophy, W. Tyler Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The history of human thought seems to be a quest for truth. Each looking for some evidence of a higher law, the biologist looks at living tissue, the chemist looks in the molecule, and the physicist looks inside the atom while the mathematician looks beyond matter and the theist looks toward God. Uncertainty and ignorance have traditionally been despised and rejected in favor of Knowledge and Rigor by all such scientists. Rene Descartes is commonly understood to be the father of this modernism as he was the first to replace the Church and its authoritarianism with a belief in the …
