A Comparison Of The Magnitude Of The Mental Health Benefits Of Exercising Outdoors Vs Exercising Indoors: A Review, Greta M. Rueschmann
A Comparison Of The Magnitude Of The Mental Health Benefits Of Exercising Outdoors Vs Exercising Indoors: A Review, Greta M. Rueschmann
MSU Graduate Theses
Many people in the United States suffer from poor mental health which can lead to suicide, self-harm, or negative effects on job performance and relationships. Not everyone can afford traditional therapy nor feels comfortable with it. With a greater emphasis placed on taking care of one’s mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, there should also be a greater emphasis placed on finding alternative types of therapy that can be matched to individuals based on their personalities and preferences. One such alternative is outdoor exercise. This review was conducted to examine whether exercising or performing physical activity outdoors results in greater …
Stress And Its Interventions In Undergraduate College Students During Covid-19, Katie A. Jones
Stress And Its Interventions In Undergraduate College Students During Covid-19, Katie A. Jones
MSU Graduate Theses
Though stress in postsecondary education is a highly researched topic, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has created many new questions that require answers. It is important to connect total perceived stress in undergraduate students with academic, COVID-19, and distance-learning factors and examine the effectiveness of interventions on stress and anxiety during the pandemic. This research determines the efficacy of mindfulness stress interventions (cognitive-behavioral, guided meditation, and music) for individual differences in stress, self- efficacy, and anxiety and links these variables to performance. This study measures levels of different types of stress (total perceived, distance-learning, academic, and COVID-19) for undergraduate …
Crutches, James Preston Heil
Crutches, James Preston Heil
MSU Graduate Theses
The following thesis is a collection of creative nonfiction essays, poems, and short stories. The overarching theme of this body of work is Millennial-aged adults grappling with a variety of traumas both personal and global; this dovetailing of personal grief alongside international grief is meant as an artistic expression of anxiety. In other words, the question posed here is: what does a young adult make of a world that is incessantly brutal? The answer is explored in both fictional and nonfictional ways, and no definitive conclusion is given. Rather, the events of the stories contained herein are representative of the …
Working Memory As A Predictor Of Social Distancing And Face Mask Compliance During Covid-19 Pandemic, Cassandra Jean Kemmel
Working Memory As A Predictor Of Social Distancing And Face Mask Compliance During Covid-19 Pandemic, Cassandra Jean Kemmel
MSU Graduate Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many changes in daily lives around the world. In the United States, face masks and social distancing rules have been suggested and even enforced in areas throughout the country. Compliance with these regulations will in turn, hopefully, reduce transmission and therefore the threat of the COVID-19 virus. Working memory (WM) has been found to be an integral part of the decision-making process, by assessing costs and benefits, both individually and for others. In May 2019, Xie, Campbell, and Zhang (2020) found that WM capabilities were predictive of social distancing compliance. The purpose of this …
The Relationship Between Self-Reported Measures Of Anxiety And Sensory Processing, Elizabeth R. Troutwine
The Relationship Between Self-Reported Measures Of Anxiety And Sensory Processing, Elizabeth R. Troutwine
MSU Graduate Theses
Auditory sensory gating, a type of sensory processing, is a physiological mechanism that allows the brain to filter out and respond less to redundant sensory information. Poor sensory gating has been found in clinical groups such as Alzheimer’s dementia (Jessen et al., 2001), bipolar I disorder (Lijffijt et al., 2009), schizophrenia (Patterson et al., 2008), and other anxiety-related psychopathologies such as panic disorder (Ghisolfi et al., 2006), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Orr et al., 2002), and obsessive-compulsive-disorder (OCD) (Hashimoto, 2007). Research is limited regarding effects of chronic worry and anxiety on sensory gating ability. This study will explore the relationship …
The Good, The Bad, And The Unspoken: Complex Layers Of Motherhood, Casaundra R. Beard
The Good, The Bad, And The Unspoken: Complex Layers Of Motherhood, Casaundra R. Beard
MSU Graduate Theses
This body of work represents my frustrations about domestic life, by
communicating the raw, unfiltered side of how sometimes my anxiety and
motherhood coincide. By addressing the harsh stigmas society has towards both
anxiety and motherhood, I hope to normalize the reality rather than continue the
cycle of these idealized notions of what motherhood is supposed to be. Each piece
represents a small seemingly insignificant moment from my average day, but it is
when they start to accumulate together that results in an anxiety attack. The titles
of each piece are the positive mantras I repeat endlessly to convince myself …
Guided Imagery And Deep Breathing: Minimizing Anxiety Experienced By Pediatric Cancer Patients, Bethany Grace Aney
Guided Imagery And Deep Breathing: Minimizing Anxiety Experienced By Pediatric Cancer Patients, Bethany Grace Aney
MSU Graduate Theses
This particular research study examined the impact of guided imagery and deep breathing as coping tools to reduce the anxiety levels experienced by pediatric cancer patients ages 6-12 years of age at a children’s hospital in Central Pennsylvania. This quantitative study utilized a pretest-posttest design, in addition to utilizing the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC™) as the baseline and post-test assessment. The STAIC™ is a questionnaire tool that assesses individuals’ state and trait anxiety through a total of 40 questions. This particular study had a total of five patients, two male and three female that consented to undergoing three …

The Effectiveness Of Implementing A Collaborative Mental Health Approach On Quality Of Life For Individuals Of Low Socioeconomic Status, Tyler Z. Tooley
MSU Graduate Theses
The ultimate purpose of this study is to provide insight and education to mental health clinicians, politicians and the general public of the numerous effects poverty has on mental health, in addition to the most beneficial ways to combat those insidious effects. The specific barriers met by individuals of low socioeconomic status severely affect psychological and physical health, as well as social and environmental relationships, which therefore diminish overall quality of life. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of implementing a collaborative mental health approach for low income individuals on length of engagement in services and …
I Was A Teenage Misanthrope: Essays, Lane E. Pybas
I Was A Teenage Misanthrope: Essays, Lane E. Pybas
MSU Graduate Theses
The essays in this collection each explore to some extent my experience of mental illness, specifically clinical depression and generalized anxiety disorder. In writing these essays, I wanted to experiment with different methods of representing the self as it undergoes an experience of mental illness. In the essay “I Was a Teenage Misanthrope,” for example, I portray myself in a somewhat humorous way, highlighting my antisocial behaviors for comic effect, in order to depict a period of my life that might otherwise have been too difficult to write about. In “Quiet Midwestern Bitch,” an essay about anxiety, I represent multiple …
Guiding In And Away, Terry Belew
Guiding In And Away, Terry Belew
MSU Graduate Theses
“Guiding In and Away” is a collection of poems exploring shifts in contemporary American culture. Major themes include technology-induced anxiety, human connectivity, isolation, and the importance of nature in a man-made world. These themes are demonstrated throughout the collection through the use of speakers set into situations that reflect what is lost with the recent digitalization of human interaction, the isolation and loneliness caused by these losses, and how natural settings are encroached upon because of digitalization.
