Writing Trauma In Iraq: Literary Representations Of War And Oppression In The Fiction Of Sinan Antoon, Zahraa Qasim Habeeb

MSU Graduate Theses

The Iraqi war narrative reflects the traumatizing situation that omnipresence of war and three decades of oppression have caused to Iraqis' views of life. Writing about their traumatic experience is an essential way of giving voice to their wounds. The Iraqi American novelist Sinan Antoon is a "wounded storyteller" who is able to give words to the wounds of his homeland. His two novels, I'jaam: An Iraqi Rhapsody and The Corpse Washer, address the physical and psychological trauma of wars and prolonged years of oppression in Iraq. Academic research and literary production about the effect of trauma presented in the …

An Affect Theory Of Composition, Lindsey L. Novak Dec 2015

An Affect Theory Of Composition, Lindsey L. Novak

MSU Graduate Theses

This thesis explores the effect that being published in an online journal has on students' attitudes about writing and their willingness to revise. The impetus for the study was a combination of frustration at seeing the students in the Writing Center devaluing their own work, as well as my own experiences within the academy at large. The problem was that these students were neither seen as "good writers" within an academic setting, nor believed themselves to be such. The methods employed were the creation of a WordPress webpage, with a URL redirect ("boldjournal.org") which served as a forum in which …

Systemic Insulin Sensitivity And Skeletal Muscle Akt Signaling In Rats Artificially Selected For Low And High Aerobic Capacity, Kyle Levi Fulghum Dec 2015

Systemic Insulin Sensitivity And Skeletal Muscle Akt Signaling In Rats Artificially Selected For Low And High Aerobic Capacity, Kyle Levi Fulghum

MSU Graduate Theses

The mechanism(s) linking physical inactivity, obesity, and type-II diabetes are unclear. I hypothesized low intrinsic aerobic capacity is associated with reduced systemic insulin sensitivity via skeletal muscle insulin signaling. After 34 generations of selective breeding, high aerobic capacity (HCR) rats exhibited an 8-fold increase in running distance vs low aerobic capacity (LCR) rats (n=14 per group). LCR rats had higher rates of weight gain vs HCR (p<0.05) though food consumption was constant (p=0.86) over a 12-week study. Rats were divided into 4 groups: 1) LCR-Sham Surgery, 2) LCR-Catheterization, 3) HCR-Sham Surgery or 4) HCR-Catheterization (n=7 per group). Euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamps on catheterized rats tested insulin sensitivity while sham LCR and HCR were used for basal tissue analysis. Plasma insulin levels did not differ during the clamps, but LCR required lower glucose infusion rates than HCR (p<0.05). Upon insulin stimulation, both absolute and normalized phospho-Akt(Ser473) of soleus muscle were significantly increased in HCR above basal group (p<0.05), but not in LCR. No difference was observed between insulin-stimulated phospho-Akt(Ser473) of HCR and LCR groups . These data support that LCR is linked to a reduction in insulin sensitivity in vivo without impairments of insulin-stimulated skeletal muscle phospho-Akt(Ser473) vs HCR rats.

Terrorism And The Rise Of Isis In Egypt, Jantzen William Garnett Dec 2015

Terrorism And The Rise Of Isis In Egypt, Jantzen William Garnett

MSU Graduate Theses

Using mostly primary source materials this thesis seeks to understand the evolution of and linkages between different terrorist organization that have operated in Egypt and the Sinai, in particular. Of particular interest was the terrorist group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) which later became an Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham [Syria] (ISIS) affiliate known as Wilayat Sinai. The thesis then documents the group's operations and shows how it has evolved over the past five years into one of ISIS' most lethal affiliates. ISIS' expansion into Egypt by incorporating ABM into its global terrorist network has increased the threat posed by …

Construction Of An Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (Icvd) Reactor And Deposition Of Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Thin Films Using Perfluoro-1-Octanesulfonyl Fluoride As The Initiator, Edgar Kiprop Kosgey Dec 2015

Construction Of An Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (Icvd) Reactor And Deposition Of Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Thin Films Using Perfluoro-1-Octanesulfonyl Fluoride As The Initiator, Edgar Kiprop Kosgey

MSU Graduate Theses

Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition (iCVD) is a surface polymerization technique that is different from other traditional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques. iCVD is carried under a vacuum without the use of solvents, therefore eliminating contaminations. An initiator and a monomer are metered into a vacuum reactor chamber. Inside the reaction chamber is an array of resistively heated filaments and a cooled substrate stage. Monomer species adsorb on to the cooled substrate surface underneath the filament array. The thermal energy from the resistively heated filaments breaks the bonds in the initiator molecule, generating free radicals. These generated free radicals chemisorb to …

Nonproliferation: Rapid Retreat From The Gold Standard Negatively Impacts Future Nuclear Negotiations, Evan Tyler Beese Dec 2015

Nonproliferation: Rapid Retreat From The Gold Standard Negatively Impacts Future Nuclear Negotiations, Evan Tyler Beese

MSU Graduate Theses

In 2009, the United States and the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) concluded a nuclear cooperation agreement which contained a commitment on the part of the U.A.E. not to enrich uranium through its own domestic programs. Dubbed the "Gold Standard” of nuclear nonproliferation by the Obama administration, such an accomplishment has not been repeated in nuclear agreements between 2009 and 2015. This paper examines American nuclear cooperation negotiations following the establishment of the "Gold Standard,” and argues that the rapid reversal of American negotiating policy toward enrichment and reprocessing technologies will hinder U.S. nonproliferation goals going forward.

Sex-Associated Mitochondrial Genes: Tools For Understanding Unionid Reproduction And Development, Amy Louise Maynard Dec 2015

Sex-Associated Mitochondrial Genes: Tools For Understanding Unionid Reproduction And Development, Amy Louise Maynard

MSU Graduate Theses

Gonochoristic species of the bivalve order Unionida possess two types of mitochondria. The female-inherited mitochondria (F-mt) is found in the somatic cells of both sexes, while male-inherited mitochondria (M-mt) is found in the male gonad. These mitochondria possess different open reading frames (M-ORF or F-ORF respectively). Previous studies suggested that two types of sperm might exist, each carrying one or the other mitochondrial haplotype, and it was hypothesized that the presence of either F-mt or M-mt in sperm may be involved in determination of offspring sex. I investigated this hypothesis in Bleedingtooth (Venustaconcha pleasii). Sperm samples were obtained from field-collected …

The objective of this study was to examine the attitudes of agricultural producers in the Missouri Ozarks towards participation in a food hub. A survey of 218 farmers was conducted to assess how likely producers were to sell into a food hub and whether those producers would be willing to alter their supply to accommodate the needs of the proposed hub. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis and regression analysis were used to uncover which variables were most likely to contribute …

The Myth Of A Secular Economy: Capitalism's Unarticulated Theology, Daniel F. Sebastian Dec 2015

The Myth Of A Secular Economy: Capitalism's Unarticulated Theology, Daniel F. Sebastian

MSU Graduate Theses

The discipline of modern economics has been categorized as based in mathematics and thus dealing only with facts. Religion, on the other hand, is considered one of the primary institutions in society that engenders different values. The stark separation between these two fields is typical of the modern fact-value distinction. The goal of this project is to provide, relying heavily upon Peter L. Berger, a detailed analysis of the value-laden social functions of religion and consider whether economics, specifically capitalism, also carries out these functions. The thesis blurs the lines between economics and religion by showing that capitalism engages in …

The Orientalism Of Edgar Allan Poe: The Allure Of The Middle East In Al-Aaraaf, Sohaib Kamal Al-Kamal Jul 2015

The Orientalism Of Edgar Allan Poe: The Allure Of The Middle East In Al-Aaraaf, Sohaib Kamal Al-Kamal

MSU Graduate Theses

This thesis explores the Orientalist discourse in four of Edgar Allan Poe's poems and two of his prose essays. The major aspects of Orientalism examined in Poe's works rely on the theoretical ideas of Edward Said's Orientalism and other ideas developed by important Arab writers. Said and other Arab writers agree that Islam is the locus of any study of Orientalism. This thesis focuses on the major role of Oriental imagery that it plays in Poe's early poems. It also examines two of his prose essays to help understand central aspects of Poe's orientalia which are also reflected in his …

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht Jul 2015

The Elite Of The Elites: The U.S. Marine Raider Battalions, 1942-1944: A Case Study In Elite Military Organizations, Stephen Mark Houseknecht

MSU Graduate Theses

In 1942, the U.S. Marine Corps activated the Marine Raider battalions, the first American special forces units of World War II. However, the introduction of an elite subculture within the ranks of the Marine Corps, which already prided itself on being the nation's elite fighting force, resulted in conflicting cultures and competing identities. Many Marines felt that the creation of an elite within the ranks of the elite was superfluous and undesirable. The preferential treatment and widespread publicity accorded to the Raiders, combined with the Raiders' sense of exceptionalism and claims to superiority, garnered resentment among other Marines. Ultimately, the …

Examining The Incremental Validity Of Personality-Based Implicit Association Tests Designed To Predict Behavior Related To Integrity, Maryann Elaine Stassen Jul 2015

Examining The Incremental Validity Of Personality-Based Implicit Association Tests Designed To Predict Behavior Related To Integrity, Maryann Elaine Stassen

MSU Graduate Theses

The present study examined the incremental predictive validity of four personality-based Implicit Association Tests (IATs) for behavior related to integrity and character. Unlike overt-based IATs, the personality-based IATs assess attributes related to dark-side personality syndromes. A temptation manipulation provided opportunities for subjects to follow or break rules and blow the whistle or remain silent when queried about the rule compliance of a confederate and the theft of a wallet. In addition to the four personality-based IATs, subjects also completed five explicit (self-report) overt and personality-based integrity measures and two overt-based IAT measures. Findings generally supported the incremental validity of the …

Synthesis And Functionalization Of Fluorescent Quantum Dot Bioconjugates For Cellular Imaging Of Directed Gene Therapy, Jason Matthew Davis

MSU Graduate Theses

Herein, I optimize a method for synthesis and bioconjugation of water-soluble, fluorescent CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for targeted cellular delivery of DNA. Core CdSe QDs were synthesized in high temperature organic solvents and passivated with a ZnS shell to increase quantum yield. The fluorescent QD nanoparticles were made water-soluble by enveloping them with an amphiphilic polymer. These aqueous nanoparticles were functionalized with tertiary amines to impart a positive charge, allowing electrostatic binding to negatively-charged DNA. The conjugated QDs were characterized using zeta potential and electrophoresis to gauge their ability to electrostatically bind DNA. The QDs were further modified by conjugation …

Investigation Of Nocifensive And Cellular Effects Of Dihydroergotamine In A Model Of Chronic Migraine, Jennifer Elise Denson Jul 2015

Investigation Of Nocifensive And Cellular Effects Of Dihydroergotamine In A Model Of Chronic Migraine, Jennifer Elise Denson

MSU Graduate Theses

The goal of my study was to investigate the nocifensive behavioral and cellular effects of dihydroergotamine (DHE) and sumatriptan in a model of sustained trigeminal activation. Trigeminal nerves provide sensory innervation to the head and face and their activation has been implicated in migraine pathology. The most commonly prescribed medications for migraine treatment are the triptan class of drugs. However, triptans are not an effective therapy for all migraine patients and some develop triptan resistance. Ergot-derivatives, including DHE, could be a potential alternative for this subpopulation of patients. To cause activation of the trigeminal system, adult male Sprague Dawley rats …

Assessment Of Three Grape Varieties' Resistance To Five Viruses And Assembly Of A Novel Grapevine Vein Clearing Virus Genome, Michael Ryan Kovens Jul 2015

Assessment Of Three Grape Varieties' Resistance To Five Viruses And Assembly Of A Novel Grapevine Vein Clearing Virus Genome, Michael Ryan Kovens

MSU Graduate Theses

Over 65 viruses are known to infect grapevines, more than any other agricultural crop. Growth, yield, and quality of virus-infected vines suffer, reducing the profitability to grape growers. Therefore, it is critical to identify grape cultivars resistant to these viruses which can be utilized to protect more susceptible varieties from infection. Wine grape cultivar Norton (Vitis aestivalis) and Chambourcin (V. vinifera hybrid), and rootstock St. George (V. rupestris) have been known to be disease tolerant. In the first study, Norton and Chambourcin were infected with Grapevine fleck virus (GFkV), Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3), Grapevine virus A (GVA), and Grapevine …

Evaluation Of Anti-Migraine Drugs In An In Vivo Rat Model Of Chronic Migraine, Shannon Nicole Stiles

MSU Graduate Theses

Approximately 2% of the US population is affected by chronic migraine (CM). CM is a recurring, neurological disorder characterized by painful headache, along with autonomic, gastrointestinal, and other somatic symptoms. Prolonged sensitization of the trigeminal system, which is implicated in CM, is comprised of peripheral primary trigeminal ganglion neurons that provide sensory innervation of the head and face and second order neurons in the spinal trigeminal nucleus (STN). The goal of my study was to evaluate anti-migraine drugs for their ability to inhibit ongoing peripheral and central sensitization of trigeminal nociceptors. An in vivo animal model was used to determine …

Examination Of The Cytotoxicity Of Carboxyl Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Escherichia Coli, Brittany Linn Twibell Jul 2015

Examination Of The Cytotoxicity Of Carboxyl Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Escherichia Coli, Brittany Linn Twibell

MSU Graduate Theses

The growing use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in industrial and consumer products raises important questions about their environmental fate and impact on prokaryotes. In the environment, CNTs are exposed to a variety of conditions (e.g. UV light) that could lead to decomposition and changes in their chemical properties. Therefore, the potential cytotoxic effect of both pristine and artificially aged carboxyl functionalized single-walled CNTs at neutral and acidic conditions on Escherichia coli K12 was analyzed using a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, which also allowed monitoring of non-lethal growth effects. However, there were no observable MIC or significant changes in growth …

MSU Graduate Theses

This work details the design, assembly, and testing of a high temperature electron beam evaporator for equilibrated vapor phase evaporation of rock oxides for the purpose of astrophysical characterization of extrasolar planetary atmospheres. Infrared spectroscopy of high temperature SiO2 atmosphere created through the electron beam evaporation technique and trapped by argon ice matrix isolation was performed to generate a reference spectrum against which absorption lines in stellar spectra taken during planetary transits can be compared. Studies demonstrate that water inclusions in milky quartz (SiO2) can be used to create H2O/SiO2 equilibrated atmospheres within a Knudsen cell. Modeling of exoplanet spectra …

Of Dogs And Disciples: Gentiles And The Discourse Of Identity In The Gospel Of Matthew, Angela D. Ingram May 2015

Of Dogs And Disciples: Gentiles And The Discourse Of Identity In The Gospel Of Matthew, Angela D. Ingram

MSU Graduate Theses

This thesis examines some of the ways that the narrative of the Gospel of Matthew functions rhetorically, within the context of a broader first-century Jewish-Christian discourse of identity, to construct insider identity—i.e., to construct disciples—in relation to non-Jews. The focus, in particular, is on two key tensions regarding non-Jews in the narrative context of the gospel: 1) the tension between the negative stereotypical "Gentiles" of Jesus discourse and the very positive portrayal of some Gentile characters in the narrative; and 2) the tension between the two commissions of Jesus to his disciples, between his first command to "go nowhere among …

Dark Side Personality Iats: Development Of Non-Bipolar Valence-Balanced Implicit Measures, Benjamin J. Thomas May 2015

Dark Side Personality Iats: Development Of Non-Bipolar Valence-Balanced Implicit Measures, Benjamin J. Thomas

MSU Graduate Theses

Predicting character failure is a challenging risk management problem in many organizations and, while self-report measures of attitudes, beliefs, and personality traits have proven useful, room for improvement remains. Measures using Implicit Association Test (IAT) procedures appear to have some promise in this regard because, unlike self-report measures, they are resistant to impression management artifacts and independent of introspective ability or self-knowledge. Adjectives related to maladaptive personality attributes were used to develop IATs that are balanced with respect to an evaluative dimension (good—bad) in order to not confound self-esteem with semantically distinct descriptors of behavioral tendencies. Although correlations with an …

Linguistic Changes In Foreign Policy Discourse, Kayla Nicole Jordan May 2015

Linguistic Changes In Foreign Policy Discourse, Kayla Nicole Jordan

MSU Graduate Theses

In an ever-changing world of foreign relations, understanding how world leaders process and interpret events will be useful in predicting potential official reactions. The focus of the current study is on the U.S. Congress, who, despite the power they can exert on world politics, is an understudied population. Language, more specifically word frequency in congressional speeches, is one way to measure how people approach situations. Therefore, I examined speeches on foreign policy issues (Iraq, Iran, and North Korea) to elucidate Congressional thinking. Using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) developed by (Pennebaker, Booth, & Francis, 2007), the linguistic constructs …

Hindsight Bias And Guilt, Jessica Frances Johnson May 2015

Hindsight Bias And Guilt, Jessica Frances Johnson

MSU Graduate Theses

This study is an examination of the relationship between hindsight bias and posttraumatic guilt. There is some evidence that guilt following a trauma is caused, at least in part, by the hindsight bias. However, the researchers behind this theory have not tested this theory utilizing the hypothetical experimental design for hindsight bias or tested their conception of hindsight bias in terms of foreseeability and inevitability. This study attempted to do just that. Participants were presented with a scenario about a friend in a car accident. Participants in the foresight group received no outcome. Participants in the hindsight groups were told …

Climbing The Taxonomy Ladder With Help From The Keyword Method, My Quoc Vu May 2015

Climbing The Taxonomy Ladder With Help From The Keyword Method, My Quoc Vu

MSU Graduate Theses

The keyword method is a mnemonic device used to improve memory. The purpose of this study is to examine whether the keyword method can facilitate higher-order learning and whether the interactive image component of the keyword method is necessary. Participants were asked to study 18 psychologists and their concepts. Undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: an own best method control group, and three variations of the keyword method. The variations in the keyword method were related to the "interactive image” aspect of that strategy. The dependent measures measured whether the keyword method can facilitate higher order-learning levels …
