Prevalence And Expression Of Bulimic Symptoms Among Aboriginal And Nonaboriginal Women., Gabrielle. Geller Jan 1996

Prevalence And Expression Of Bulimic Symptoms Among Aboriginal And Nonaboriginal Women., Gabrielle. Geller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous cross-cultural research in the area of eating disorders has, for the most part, neglected Native American women. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and expression of eating disordered attitudes and behaviours among Canadian Native women. It was expected that a higher percentage of Native women would be classified as potential bulimics than nonNative women. It was also expected that Native women, on average, would score higher on measures of eating disordered attitudes and behaviours (i.e., body dissatisfaction, bingeing and purging behaviour) than their nonNative counterparts. A secondary goal was to determine the correlation between the …

Ameliorating Effects Of Sense Of Humor On Trait Depression., Mohsan. Beg Jan 1996

Ameliorating Effects Of Sense Of Humor On Trait Depression., Mohsan. Beg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to examine the previously reported moderating effects of humor on the relationship between stress and depression. Second, to examine in more detail than had been done previously the relationship between specific humor variables and overall depression as well as the relationship between specific depression variables and overall sense of humor. Participants were 244 university students who filled out the Multiscore Depression Inventory as a measure of depression, the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale as a measure of humor, and the Life Experiences Survey as a measure of negative life stress. A hierarchical …

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Attachment Experiences: Mothers' Representations Of Self In Relation To Others., Nicole Sonya. Vellet Jan 1996

The Intergenerational Transmission Of Attachment Experiences: Mothers' Representations Of Self In Relation To Others., Nicole Sonya. Vellet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible association among a mother' s perception of her attachment to caregivers when growing up and her current self-system, view of relationships with others, and the social competence of her preschooler. The following variables (and measures) were used: (a) perception of attachment to caregivers when growing up (current revision of the Parental Caregiving Style Questionnaire; Hazan & Shaver, 1986); (b) self-esteem (the Multidimensional Self-esteem Inventory; O'Brien & Epstein, 1988); (c) social support (the Social Support Questionnaire; Sarason, 1986); (d) perception of security of adult romantic relationships (revised version of the Adult …

Attitudes Toward Eating Disorders Among University Undergraduates., Alicia Margaret. Hendley Jan 1996

Attitudes Toward Eating Disorders Among University Undergraduates., Alicia Margaret. Hendley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous literature indicates that individuals may differ in their attitudes about anorexic and bulimic behaviour. However, no standard measures exist to assess attitudes toward eating disorders. Thus, a 56-item Likert scale was developed and administered to 182 undergraduate students (109 women, 73 men; mean age 21 years). A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed four subscales relating to: desirability of anorexic and bulimic behaviours; health concerns; weight control; and level of interpersonal discomfort. Based upon the PCA and an item analysis, a 42-item scale was developed. Participants were also asked to complete the following measures: (1) a 31-item questionnaire, designed to …

Cross-Cultural Differences In Abnormal Eating Attitudes And Body Image: A Comparison Of Arab Immigrants And Women Born In Canada., Iris. Sharir Jan 1996

Cross-Cultural Differences In Abnormal Eating Attitudes And Body Image: A Comparison Of Arab Immigrants And Women Born In Canada., Iris. Sharir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research indicates that women who immigrate from non-Western countries to Western ones may be at a high risk of developing eating disorders, possibly because they overidentify with Western values (Banks, 1992; Thompson, 1994). Furthermore, the risk of developing an eating disorder tends to increase as the immigrant becomes increasingly acculturated (Pumariega, 1986). The present study examined differences in pathological eating attitudes, body dissatisfaction, and ideal body image, among three groups of women: a group of White Canadian women and two groups of Middle Eastern Arab women who had lived in Canada for varying lengths of time. A total of …

The Relationship Between Perceived Severity Of Parental Physical Punishment And The Development Of Moral Reasoning Of Young Adults., Shelley E. Wilkin Jan 1996

The Relationship Between Perceived Severity Of Parental Physical Punishment And The Development Of Moral Reasoning Of Young Adults., Shelley E. Wilkin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between parental physical punishment severity as recalled by young adults and level of moral reasoning. Specifically, the relationships between 3 levels of maternal and paternal physical punishment severity (non-physical punishment, moderate physical punishment, and severe physical punishment) and level of postconventional (higher order) moral reasoning were investigated. One hundred and twenty four undergraduate psychology students completed a modified version of the Assessing Environments III (physical punishment severity measure used to classify participants into three punishment groups) and the Defining Issues Test (moral reasoning measure). Attrition due to inconsistency in completing the questionnaires resulted in a …

Interparental And Child-Parent Agreement On Childhood Psychopathology As Assessed By The Personality Inventory For Children, Second Edition (Pic/2) And The Personality Inventory For Youth (Piy)., Cory D. Saunders Jan 1996

Interparental And Child-Parent Agreement On Childhood Psychopathology As Assessed By The Personality Inventory For Children, Second Edition (Pic/2) And The Personality Inventory For Youth (Piy)., Cory D. Saunders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Examined interparental and child-parent agreement on externalizing and internalizing behaviors as assessed by the Personality Inventory for Children, Second Edition (PIC/2) and the Personality Inventory for Youth (PIY). Sixty families of non-clinical children between the ages of 9 and 16 years participated; each parent completing the PIC/2 while their child completed the PIY. Informant response patterns were compared for both the factor scales and a subset of comparable clinical scales (including validity, general screening, externalizing and internalizing indices). The levels of interparental and child-parent agreement for the various scales were examined. The existence of significant differences in the level of …

Test Re-Test Reliability Of The Boston Naming Test And The Visual Naming Test On Normal Subjects With A Comparison To Subjects With Complex Partial Seizure Disorder., Janet Lynn. Murray Jan 1996

Test Re-Test Reliability Of The Boston Naming Test And The Visual Naming Test On Normal Subjects With A Comparison To Subjects With Complex Partial Seizure Disorder., Janet Lynn. Murray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of neurological illnesses including temporal lobe epilepsy have been shown to result in deficits of confrontation naming or anomia. The Boston Naming Test (BNT) and the Visual Naming Test (VNT) are both standardized measures of naming ability. Serving as a neurologically intact group, thirty adult volunteers from the Windsor area were administered the BNT, VNT and the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT) on two occasions separated by a two month interval. Temporal stability of these measures was demonstrated by the high correlation between test re-test scores for the BNT, VNT and COWAT, respectively. Excellent intertest agreement of …

An Investigation Of Psychosis In Chamorro Culture: Relating Delusional Thought To Cultural Context., Lisa S. Keith Jan 1996

An Investigation Of Psychosis In Chamorro Culture: Relating Delusional Thought To Cultural Context., Lisa S. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study is an investigation of psychosis in Chamorro culture--the indigenous people of the Marianas Islands. There were five primary goals of the study: (1) to present an indepth description of the delusional thought structure and content in schizophrenic Chamorros; (2) to explore the potential connection between the Chamorro cultural and historical context, and the content of Chamorro delusional thought; (3) to discover the Chamorro schizophrenics' explanatory models of their mental health problems; (4) to investigate whether Chamorro schizophrenics reported the presence of factors associated with less industrialized cultures; and (5) to evaluate the usefulness of employing a qualitative …

Children Of Chronic Pain Sufferers: Assessing Their Social Competence., Sophie. Beugnot Jan 1996

Children Of Chronic Pain Sufferers: Assessing Their Social Competence., Sophie. Beugnot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Literature on chronic pain has identified alexithymia, depression and marital difficulties as characteristics of chronic pain populations. Previous research has also linked these parental characteristics with social competence deficits in children, suggesting a need to assess the social skills of chronic pain sufferers' children. In the current study, samples of chronic pain sufferers and pain-free participants were compared in terms of levels of alexithymia, depression and marital difficulties as well as in their children's social competence. The predictive value of these parental characteristics and others for children's social competence was also investigated. Gender differences in social competence and correlates of …

The Psychotherapy Experiences, Concerns And Preferences Of Lesbians And Gay Men., Stuart Grant. Gibson Jan 1996

The Psychotherapy Experiences, Concerns And Preferences Of Lesbians And Gay Men., Stuart Grant. Gibson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the mental health profession and the lesbian and gay community. One-hundred and twenty-three gay men and 65 lesbians completed surveys concerning their attitudes toward the mental health profession and their experiences with it. An experiment was conducted in order to examine the influence of a therapist's gender and expressed attitude toward coming-out on the therapy experience of participants when the therapist's sexual orientation was unknown. Each participant read a description of a therapy situation in which the therapist's gender and attitudes toward coming-out (positive, neutral and negative) were …

Depression, Styles Of Private Inner Experience, And Coping: A Comparison Of Pathological Gamblers In Gamblers Anonymous With Nonpathologically Gambling Controls., Heather A. Getty Jan 1996

Depression, Styles Of Private Inner Experience, And Coping: A Comparison Of Pathological Gamblers In Gamblers Anonymous With Nonpathologically Gambling Controls., Heather A. Getty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study compared 29 pathological gamblers in Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and 29 matched non-pathologically gambling controls on the conceptually interrelated constructs of depression, styles of private inner experience, and coping styles. Depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979), styles of private inner experience were measured by the Short Imaginal Processes Inventory (SIPI; Huba, Singer, Aneshensel, & Antrobus, 1982), and coping styles were measured by the Problem-Focused Styles of Coping Inventory (PF-SOC; Heppner, Cook, Wright, & Johnson, 1995). Pathological gamblers reported significantly more depression than controls, but did not demonstrate different styles …

Design Fluency Test: Normative Data, Cognitive Skills Related To Performance, And Performance By Individuals With Temporal Lobe Pathology., Sherri Leigh. Carter Jan 1996

Design Fluency Test: Normative Data, Cognitive Skills Related To Performance, And Performance By Individuals With Temporal Lobe Pathology., Sherri Leigh. Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Design Fluency Test (DFT) requires the invention of abstract designs within a limited amount of time. There are two conditions of the test: a free condition without restrictions and a fixed condition where designs must consist of exactly four lines. DFT performance was investigated for healthy controls (n = 66), left temporal lobectomy patients (n = 44), right temporal lobectomy patients (n = 40), right frontal resection patients (n = 8) and left frontal resection patients (n = 1). Groups of individuals with frontal resections were too small to include in data analyses. Each participant in the control group …
