Development Of A Teacher Checklist For Childhood Dissociative Disorders., Audrey Jean. Don Jan 1994

Development Of A Teacher Checklist For Childhood Dissociative Disorders., Audrey Jean. Don

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dissociative disorders (DDs) in adults have received increasing attention over the past 20 years, while childhood DDs have remained little known and rarely diagnosed. Since DDs are treatable and presumed to arise in childhood, early identification is critical. The Teacher Checklist for Childhood Dissociative Disorders (TCCD) was developed as a screening instrument to identify children with possible DDs. At a treatment center for children with learning disabilities (LD) and socioemotional problems, 26 children were rated on the TCCD by social workers, teachers, and additional staff. Children with DDs were independently diagnosed by a psychologist working in the school. The children …

Detection Of Simulated Memory Impairment: Use Of A Test Battery To Detect Informed And Uninformed Malingerers., Colleen Patricia. Millikin Jan 1994

Detection Of Simulated Memory Impairment: Use Of A Test Battery To Detect Informed And Uninformed Malingerers., Colleen Patricia. Millikin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the use of a test battery to detect simulated memory impairment. Undergraduate students were asked to perform as well as they could on a battery of malingering tests and other clinical memory tests. The same subjects were tested a week later. In the second session, 11 subjects were instructed to perform as well as they could (control group C2). The other 44 subjects were randomly assigned to one of four malingering conditions made up of factorial combinations of two independent variables, Incentive and Information. Subjects who received Monetary Incentive instructions played the role of a character who …

Clinical Psychologists' Endorsements Of Mental Disorder Ideology As A Function Of Personal Sociopolitical Values., Iain Kerr Bowden. Twaddle Jan 1994

Clinical Psychologists' Endorsements Of Mental Disorder Ideology As A Function Of Personal Sociopolitical Values., Iain Kerr Bowden. Twaddle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The sociopolitical underpinnings of psychiatric theory are examined both theoretically and empirically. In the theoretical analysis, the view of mental disorder as a value-free conception is shown to be rooted in logical-positivism, an epistemology which has been strongly criticized for positing a realm of science beyond values. It is argued that psychiatric theory, live all knowledge, contains values which promote particular sociopolitical interests. Traditional mental disorder conceptions are outlined as supporting the interests of dominant sectors of society by focusing on the intra-individual concomitants of psychiatric distress and minimizing the importance of the social context in which human suffering arises. …

Behavioural Problems And Coping Skills Of Adolescent Siblings Of Cancer Patients., Darcy Lyn. Cantin Jan 1994

Behavioural Problems And Coping Skills Of Adolescent Siblings Of Cancer Patients., Darcy Lyn. Cantin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the behavioural problems and coping skills of adolescent siblings of cancer patients were examined. In addition, the amount of information received by subjects regarding the ill sibling's condition, and the amount of change and negative affect experienced by subjects since their siblings' diagnosis of cancer were examined. Six male and nine female subjects from 12 to 18 years of age were included. Six self-report measures were used. Mothers completed the following three measures: the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach, 1991), the Parent/Well Sibling Communication Measure (Cohen, Friedrich, Copeland, & Pendergrass, 1989), and a Family History Form. Adolescent subjects …

Social Support, Attributional Style, And Self-Blame In Child Surviviors Of Sexual Abuse., Linda R. Reinstein Jan 1994

Social Support, Attributional Style, And Self-Blame In Child Surviviors Of Sexual Abuse., Linda R. Reinstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory study was designed to gain some preliminary insight into the dynamic relationships among children's perceptions of the quality of their social support network, current attributional styles, and perceptions of self-blame related to their experiences of sexual abuse. Based on Hindman's (1989) model, it is proposed that children who have been sexually abused evaluate their victim status and assign self-blame according to perceptions of their relationships with both the offender and significant others. In this study, ten 8-17 year old female survivors of intrafamilial sexual abuse completed the Social Support Scale for Children and Adolescents (SSSC) (Harter, 1985), the …

Testing A Five Factor Model Of Visual-Spatial, Motor, And Psychomotor Functioning And A Three Factor Model Of Verbal Functioning In Learning-Disabled Children., Joanna Margaret. Hamilton Jan 1994

Testing A Five Factor Model Of Visual-Spatial, Motor, And Psychomotor Functioning And A Three Factor Model Of Verbal Functioning In Learning-Disabled Children., Joanna Margaret. Hamilton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A series of three studies was conducted in order to continue investigations into the construct validity of a modified Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery (HRNB) in children. Factors of motor, psychomotor, visual-spatial, and language ability were investigated in two groups of learning-disabled children in order to determine: (1) their predictive validity; (2) the existence of a potential hierarchical arrangement of abilities within the motor and visual-spatial factors; and (3) the exact nature of the language factors. Results obtained from investigations of the predictive validity of the factors revealed that a combination of factors representing primary neuropsychological assets and deficits (as outlined in …
