Correlates Of The Joint Attention Disturbance In Autism, Linda Sue Bourdon Jan 1999

Correlates Of The Joint Attention Disturbance In Autism, Linda Sue Bourdon

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Deficits in joint attention, imitation, and pretense are believed to contribute to subsequent difficulty in the development of a theory of mind in children with autism (Baron-Cohen, 1991; Mundy, 1995). Joint attention and other early social skills of children with autism (34 male, 4 female; ages 4 to 18 years) were correlated with measures of nonverbal cognitive ability (Leiter International Performance Scale), receptive and expressive language skills (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised and Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised), and the severity of autism (Childhood Autism Rating Scale) to gain a better understanding of these developmental relationships. Joint attention and other early …

Fine-Scale Strata Formation In Biologically And Physically Dominated Estuarine Systems Within The Lower Chesapeake And York River Subestuary, Timothy M. Dellapenna Jan 1999

Fine-Scale Strata Formation In Biologically And Physically Dominated Estuarine Systems Within The Lower Chesapeake And York River Subestuary, Timothy M. Dellapenna

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

To investigate the relationship between biological and physical mixing in forming strata, the lower mainstem of Chesapeake Bay has been contrasted with the York River Subestuary. By using radioisotope profiles from sediment cores, comparisons are made in terms of depth and rate of sediment mixing, deposition and accretion. Within the lower Chesapeake Bay two sites were selected as biologically dominated, both are located within the bay stem plains and are characterized by muddy sand and an abundance of large, deep-dwelling organisms. X-radiographs indicate complete biological reworking of sediments. 210Pb profiles reveal low sediment accretion rates within the mainstem sites ( …

Bacterial Dynamics And Community Structure In The York River Estuary, Gary Edward Schultz Jr Jan 1999

Bacterial Dynamics And Community Structure In The York River Estuary, Gary Edward Schultz Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Bacterial community dynamics were investigated over seasonal and basin scales within the York River, VA, estuary. Various parameters characterizing bacterioplankton dynamics were measured weekly at a single station (March 1996 through May 1997) and monthly at six stations (June 1996 through May 1997) spanning the entire salinity gradient (0 - ca. 20 psu over 60 km). Bacterial abundance and production were found to be high throughout the estuary. Bacterial abundance ranged from 4.4 x 108 to 1.3 x 1010 cells-liter-1Incorporation of 3H-thymidine ranged from 10 to 863 pmol-liter-1-hr-1 while 3H-leucine incorporation rates ranged from 25 to 1963 pmol-liter -1-hr-1. Clear …

Aspects Of The Biology Of Sea Turtles In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, William C. Coles Jan 1999

Aspects Of The Biology Of Sea Turtles In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, William C. Coles

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

I present here an investigation of several aspects of the biology of sea turtles in the mid-Atlantic Bight. During 19 years of data collection, included in this study, strandings have increased for all species of sea turtles in Virginia. Most sea turtle strandings occurred during the spring when juvenile turtles migrate into the Bay (Kemp's ridleys had a second significant stranding peak, during fall migration) along the Southern Bay and Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Sea turtles utilize the Chesapeake Bay as a feeding area when the water temperature approaches 20??C, and they leave after the water temperature drops below 20??C. Although …

Nitrate Reduction At The Groundwater - Salt Marsh Interface, Craig -1967 Tobias Jan 1999

Nitrate Reduction At The Groundwater - Salt Marsh Interface, Craig -1967 Tobias

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The influence of groundwater discharge on the hydrology and biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in a fringing intertidal wetland was studied by characterizing groundwater discharge, determining N-cycling rates in cores, and examining nitrate reduction in situ using 15N enrichment and natural gradient tracer techniques. Groundwater discharge was estimated by three independent methods: Darcy's Law, a water/salt mass balance, and a subsurface tracer test. Seasonal patterns of discharge predicted by Darcy's Law and the mass balance were similar. Discharge maxima and minima occurred in April and September, respectively. The water/salt mass balance provided the more reasonable estimate of groundwater flux at high …

A Transpersonal Approach In A Case Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Deborah Hall Berkley-Carter Jan 1999

A Transpersonal Approach In A Case Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Deborah Hall Berkley-Carter

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and the humanistic movement have, in the latter years of the twentieth century, been joined by a fourth psychological force, Transpersonal psychology. This study utilized a Qualitative methodology, Social-Constructivist orientation, Case Study design, and Dual Narrative format to explore the feasibility of utilizing a transpersonal approach in a case of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Sub-units of the investigation were (a) the treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder by traditional, psychoanalytic/medical model psychotherapy, (b) the functions of the altered states of consciousness within the client's personality system, (c) the functions of the Internal Self Helper in the integration of the client's …
