Integrating Art History Into K-5 Social Studies Classrooms, Kate L. Schlegel Jan 2022

Integrating Art History Into K-5 Social Studies Classrooms, Kate L. Schlegel

Senior Independent Study Theses

This independent study investigates the possibility for interaction between art and history in elementary school curriculum. An analysis of current education initiatives at the federal level establishes the need to create a more effective history—or, its counterpart at the elementary level, social studies--curriculum. Since other subjects–such as English, math, and science–are assessed at the national level, while history is not, this subject is often under-emphasized in order to meet learning targets in these other subjects. A study of educational theorists, such as Piaget and William Blake, establishes the potential for the study of history with students at lower stages of …

Inventing Christine De Pizan: Art And Authorship In Late Medieval France, Adria Leigh Woodruff Jan 2020

Inventing Christine De Pizan: Art And Authorship In Late Medieval France, Adria Leigh Woodruff

Senior Independent Study Theses

The Book of the Queen (Harley 4431) is one of the most exquisite and fascinating manuscripts of late medieval France. Compiled for Queen Isabeau of Bavaria between 1411 and 1415 by Christine de Pizan and her small workshop, the codex is one of the largest and most illuminated of Christine’s works. While the literature on the poems of the book is vast, the miniatures have received significantly less attention. I endeavor to contribute to the literature on Christine de Pizan’s illuminations, as they serve as important amplifications of her allegories. Therefore, it is necessary to examine her miniatures in order …

The Queen’S Serpent: An Examination Of The Serpent Vessel From Burial 61 From El Perú-Waka’, Sarah Van Oss Jan 2016

The Queen’S Serpent: An Examination Of The Serpent Vessel From Burial 61 From El Perú-Waka’, Sarah Van Oss

Senior Independent Study Theses

In 2012, Dr. Olivia Navarro-Farr and her team uncovered the tomb of a Maya ruler in a large ceremonial structure at the site of El Perú-Waka’ in the Petén region of Guatemala. Specialists, subsequently, identified these remains as those of Lady K’abel, a queen already well known from texts associated with the ancient city. This study will explore one of the artifacts found in the tomb, called the War Serpent Vessel, found at the Kaloompte’s feet. I will propose that the iconographic depcitions on this artifact represent a supernatural Serpent that emerges from this vessel. I suggest that this …

Terrain, Rebecca Newhouse Jan 2012

Terrain, Rebecca Newhouse

Senior Independent Study Theses

This thesis explores the complexity of human involvement with the gigantism of nature. I studied this experience by creating my own natural panoramas, to intensify the human interaction by enabling the viewer to see a vast space in a small, concentrated form. Reversing the scale from massive to miniscule is the center of my thesis; what is it about the all-encompassing scenery of towering mountains, or long green fields that makes them so visually and conceptually powerful? Using plaster and plywood, I explored this reaction by recreating familiar geological features, such as cave dwellings, cliffs, mountains and fields. Soon the …

The Eloquence Of Stone: Propagandistic Function Of Monumental And Funerary Art In Nineteenth Century Paris, Lauren Close

Senior Independent Study Theses

This I.S. concentrates on the role that various socio-economic groups played in the development of a new monumental and funerary art aesthetic in the aftermath of the French Revolution. In particular, this work focuses on the cultural influence of the French military elites, Grands Hommes and the bourgeoisie within the public spaces of nineteenth century Paris.

Come To The Table, A. Greer Morgan Jan 2012

Come To The Table, A. Greer Morgan

Senior Independent Study Theses

Why can our favorite practical objects not also be individually created, and for that matter, even designed as works of art? I believe there is value in creating items for daily life, paying them as much attention as any artwork. This begs several questions: Where is the intersection between art and life? When does life become art, and when is art life? I have addressed these questions with my Senior I.S. project, using interdependent sculptures made from ceramics and bread to urge contemplation about the mediums themselves, as well as by offering hospitality and encouraging community through the physical act …
