Developing A Virtual Modular Synthesizer For Sound Waves And Midi, Margaret Jagger
Developing A Virtual Modular Synthesizer For Sound Waves And Midi, Margaret Jagger
Senior Independent Study Theses
Modular synthesis involves the alteration and modification of digital sound signals. Thus, this modular synthesizer allows a user the option of supplying their own MIDI-compatible controller to serve as an input source, or to use the built-in pure sound waves instead. Either input will be fed into the domain-specific language SuperCollider and altered, with specific sound modifications dependent on the input source used. Using theoretical knowledge of the physics behind the motion of sound waves, various modules and functionalities are created. Then, with SuperCollider, these modules are implemented into a synthesizer which accepts either pure sound waves or MIDI as …
Violent Means For Secure Ends: How An Absence Of State Social Safety Nets Impacts The Prevalence Of Violent Political Activity, Tabitha Skornik-Hayes
Violent Means For Secure Ends: How An Absence Of State Social Safety Nets Impacts The Prevalence Of Violent Political Activity, Tabitha Skornik-Hayes
Senior Independent Study Theses
This thesis seeks to understand the influence of the provision of Social Safety Nets (SSNs) on the ability of Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) to perpetuate violence. It argues that when NSAGs provide SSNs in the absence of state provision, individuals will be more likely to engage in and justify violent activity, resulting in the growth of the NSAG and the proliferation of violence overall. The absence of state provided SSNs is proposed to deteriorate the social contract between the state and its civilians and reinforce negative sentiments and promote distrust. The absence of the state-civilian contract culminates in the creation …
You Can’T Build A Canoe Online: Activism And Identity In Indigenous Taiwan, Adam King Hinden
You Can’T Build A Canoe Online: Activism And Identity In Indigenous Taiwan, Adam King Hinden
Senior Independent Study Theses
The Republic of China is the current government occupying the island of Taiwan –– a multiethnic land that has been populated by diverse groups for thousands of years. Today, these groups continue to face a range of adversities on behalf of the colonial government. Further, the island’s internet is dominated by Western social media platforms that exclude native modes of communication. Through ethnographic surveys and interviews, this study explores how indigenous Taiwanese activists understand their own identities, strategies of activism, and relationships to social media platforms to interrogate dominant postcolonial frameworks. It comes to two separate yet linked conclusions regarding …
Still Awaiting Justice: An Analysis On The Impact Of Anti-Immigrant Sentiment On The Reproductive Autonomy Of Migrant Women, Annays Esperanza Yacaman
Still Awaiting Justice: An Analysis On The Impact Of Anti-Immigrant Sentiment On The Reproductive Autonomy Of Migrant Women, Annays Esperanza Yacaman
Senior Independent Study Theses
My research aims to explain the impact of anti-immigrant sentiment on the reproductive autonomy of migrant women. Legislators typically act as their constituents feel on a certain issue, so I aimed to explore how legislators responded with legislation when their constituents held higher levels of anti-immigrant sentiment, hypothesizing that this would lead to more legislation limiting the reproductive autonomy of migrant women. I explore topics of eugenics and how anti-immigrant sentiment has led to modern day eugenics.
My hypothesis did not manifest itself in the expected way, but the results do provide evidence for a causal link between legislation meant …

Being Asian During Covid-19: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Domestic And International Identities, Liang-Liang Jiang
Senior Independent Study Theses
The past 3 years of the COVID-19 global pandemic has seen a rise in anti-Asian racism and hate. However, in Ohio, where Asians make up only 2.2% of the population, there is little visibility for Asians and Asian Americans. This study aims to document the diverse experiences of students and staff of East Asian descent, at The College of Wooster, during the past three years of the pandemic. My study focuses on a specific demographic of both international and domestic “Asian” identities. I recorded and transcribed interviews and uploaded them to a digital archive that can be found at: lianglij.weebly.com. …

Analysis Of The Antimicrobial Activity Of The Novel Chemotherapeutic Drug, Tpp1, Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And The Hydrogel Delivery Of Water-Soluble Antimicrobial Compounds, Alex Gasper
Senior Independent Study Theses
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and it is commonly linked with bacterial infections that often complicate treatments. Recently, chemotherapeutics have been developed that are able to act as anti-cancer agents using delocalized lipophilic cations (DLCs) that are able to specifically target mitochondrial membranes of cancer cells. TPP1 is a newly developed chemotherapeutic drug that has activity against bladder cancer and melanoma cell lines in vitro. In order to determine if TPP1 has antimicrobial activity, TPP1 was tested against a common bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, to determine if antimicrobial activity was present. This testing was …
Hands That Grab And Tongues That Say: Understanding Animal Narrators And Protagonists, Sophie Ryan
Hands That Grab And Tongues That Say: Understanding Animal Narrators And Protagonists, Sophie Ryan
Senior Independent Study Theses
Whether through owning a pet or merely seeing a squirrel outside the window, we cannot avoid encountering the non-human animal inhabitants of the world around us. This project considers how animals are represented as narrators and protagonists in predominantly 21st-century literature. Although extensive research in the fields of animal studies and human-animal studies has explored literary non-human animal characters, few have asked questions about the narratological construction of animal narrators and protagonists. This project uses the lenses of narratology and ecocriticism to discuss six texts: Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, …
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Counting The Moduli Space Of Pentagons On Finite Projective Planes, Maxwell Hosler
Senior Independent Study Theses
Finite projective planes are finite incidence structures which generalize the concept of the real projective plane. In this paper, we consider structures of points embedded in these planes. In particular, we investigate pentagons in general position, meaning no three vertices are colinear. We are interested in properties of these pentagons that are preserved by collineation of the plane, and so can be conceived as properties of the equivalence class of polygons up to collineation as a whole. Amongst these are the symmetries of a pentagon and the periodicity of the pentagon under the pentagram map, and a generalization of …
Setting The Stage For Representation: Women Candidates And Moderators' Impact On The Prevalence Of Women's Issues In Presidential Primary Debates, Hannah Groetsch
Setting The Stage For Representation: Women Candidates And Moderators' Impact On The Prevalence Of Women's Issues In Presidential Primary Debates, Hannah Groetsch
Senior Independent Study Theses
This Independent Study explores how women’s increased presence in presidential primary debates impacts the extent to which women’s issues are discussed in the debates. Prior research on political representation and critical mass theory indicates that women politicians can turn their identity as women (descriptive representation) into action that benefits their women constituents (substantive representation) by adding women’s voices and lived experiences into the political conversation. I capitalize on the 2020 election being the first where multiple women presidential candidates ran against each other, allowing me to see whether the increase in the number of women participating in the Democratic primary …
The Effects Of Venlafaxine And Voluntary Exercise On Chronic Unpredictable Stress Induced Anxiety, Marly Mcgowan
The Effects Of Venlafaxine And Voluntary Exercise On Chronic Unpredictable Stress Induced Anxiety, Marly Mcgowan
Senior Independent Study Theses
Anxiety disorders can impair cognition and emotional control, particularly in the face of novel situations, which is concerning due to the high prevalence of such diagnoses. Exposure to unpredictable chronic stress can provide a way to induce anxiety-like behaviors in rodents by disrupting the stress response systems, including the HPA axis and autonomic nervous system. Pharmacological treatments, including SNRIs like venlafaxine, and voluntary exercise are both anxiolytic treatments that can alleviate the impacts of chronic stress. Using unpredictable chronic stress to mimic the human condition, and exposure to venlafaxine and exercise to mitigate the stress, the open field and elevated …

Puffins, The Charismatic Clowns Of The Sea: Examining The Relationship Between Community Identity And The Social Construction Of Animals, Megan Henry Tuennerman
Senior Independent Study Theses
This study analyzes the factors, internal and external, that affect the relationship between community identity and the social construction of animals, and the ways in which that social construction impacts the environment. Studied through the lens of the relationship between Atlantic Puffins and the human communities they live near, these questions situate our understanding of human societies as within, as opposed to above, the environment. Without this perspective, enacting environmental protections across the globe is ineffective. The study was conducted using ethnographic methods, including 11 formal interviews with community members and experts, along with observations in Iceland and Canada. Results …

Sheltered: An Investigation Of Homelessness In The United States, Maya Renee Vasta
Senior Independent Study Theses
The purpose of this project is to investigate the connection between the social and statistical findings regarding the issue of homelessness in the United States. Because of the inconsistencies with how homelessness is tracked, two government-provided sources were used. The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness provides general data of homelessness, while the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development data shows the reported usage of homeless by the programs themselves. In addition, I also investigate the social impact and experiences of this issue to provide a more dynamic view of the problem of homelessness in the states. It was …
Visual Looming Cues Increases The Auditory Looming Bias, Maggie K. Mccracken
Visual Looming Cues Increases The Auditory Looming Bias, Maggie K. Mccracken
Senior Independent Study Theses
Looming objects have been environmentally relevant cues throughout human evolution due to potential danger. Observers integrate both auditory and visual signals emitted by moving objects. While visual arrival time estimates are relatively more accurate, auditory estimates are anticipatory as observers perceive a moving sound source as arriving before it actually does. In the present study, participants made loudness change judgments of sounds presented unimodally or with visual motion. The sounds consisted of two intensity ranges and conditions included both looming and receding motion. The results showed that listeners perceived looming sounds as changing more in loudness than equivalent receding sounds. …
Model Of A Biotic Hard Substrate Community: Paleoecology Of Large Trepostome Bryozoans From The Upper Ordovician (Katian) Of The Cincinnati Region, Usa, Kate Runciman
Senior Independent Study Theses
The calcite skeletons of trepostome bryozoan colonies from the Upper Ordovician (Katian) of the Cincinnati region record the diverse interactions and growth responses these colonies experienced. Trepostome specimens from three Cincinnatian strata; the Bellevue Member, the Bull Fork Formation, and the Whitewater Formation, were studied within this project. These three strata were deposited in a shallow epicontinental sea environment that was located in the southern subtropics, approximately 20-23°S at the time of deposition. The focus of this project was the paleoecology of large trepostome bryozoans, which was studied by examining bryozoan growth patterns, trace fossils, and sedimentation. Microscopic examination of …
The Effects Of Diversity And Inclusion Policies On Business Performance, Eraj Sikandar
The Effects Of Diversity And Inclusion Policies On Business Performance, Eraj Sikandar
Senior Independent Study Theses
In the United States, social justice and equality have become a centralized concern over the past couple of years resulting from widespread incidents of racialized violence, and the passing of multiple anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Consequently, people have started demanding greater accountability and initiatives to protect minority communities. Many businesses, to stay competitive and support the needs of their employees and customers, have strengthened their commitments to foster a culture of diversity and inclusion at work. With increasing attention being given to such policies, it is important to ask how diversity and inclusion efforts can impact organizations through employee wellbeing and firm …
Wildfire Simulation Using Agent Based Modeling: Expanding Controlled Burn Season, Morgan C. Kromer
Wildfire Simulation Using Agent Based Modeling: Expanding Controlled Burn Season, Morgan C. Kromer
Senior Independent Study Theses
The United States is home to many different and unique forests. Prior to the 21st century, the United States Forests Service assumed that the best way to protect these forests was to put all efforts to keeping them alive. An enemy to these efforts were wildfires, thus the US adopted a complete fire suppression approach. At the turn of the century, the US realized that wildfires are a necessary part of a forest ecosystem, as they help return nutrients to the soil and reduce ground fuels. However, after suppressing all fires for over 100 years, the forests evolved into a …

Highlights Generation For Tennis Matches Using Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing And Audio Analysis, Alon Liberman
Senior Independent Study Theses
This project uses computer vision, natural language processing and audio analysis to automatize the highlights generation task for tennis matches. Computer vision techniques such as camera shot detection, hough transform and neural networks are used to extract the time intervals of the points. To detect the best points, three approaches are used. Point length suggests which points correspond to rallies and aces. The audio waves are analyzed to search for the highest audio peaks, which indicate the moments where the crowd cheers the most. Sentiment analysis, a natural language processing technique, is used to look for points where the commentators …

The Infinity Conundrum: Understanding Topics In Set Theory And The Continuum Hypothesis, Sabrina Grace Helck
Senior Independent Study Theses
This project is concerned with articulating the necessary background in order to understand the famous result of the undecidability of the continuum hypothesis. The first chapter of this independent study discusses the foundations of set theory, stating fundamental definitions and theorems that will be used throughout the remainder of the project. The second chapter focuses on ordinal and cardinal numbers which will directly relate to the final chapter. First, there is a clear explanation of the notion of order and what it means for a set to be well-ordered. Then ordinal numbers are defined and some properties are listed and …

Add Women And Stir: The Effect Of Female Mentorship On Women's Law School Experiences, Riley E. Smith
Add Women And Stir: The Effect Of Female Mentorship On Women's Law School Experiences, Riley E. Smith
Senior Independent Study Theses
This Independent Study examines the effect that female mentorship has on women’s experiences in law school. Previous literature indicates seven areas in which women’s experiences differ from men’s: their attitudinal changes over time in law school, their relationships with professors, their participation in class, their perception of their academic achievement, their feelings of alienation, and their confidence. In every way, women’s experiences are worse than men’s. Some mentorship literature suggests that these experiences could be improved by female mentorship, though other literature demonstrates that female mentorship has no effect. Therefore, I ask, what is the effect of female mentorship on …

Gaming The System: A Game Theoretic Approach To Risk Management And Cybersecurity, Abigail Breitenbucher
Senior Independent Study Theses
In this independent study, we detail two fields of game theory, traditional and evolutionary. After establishing foundational concepts in both, we explore risk management and cybersecurity through a game theoretic lens, focusing on some current applications in both fields. The research culminates in an application case of a game theoretic model for the 2017 Equifax data breach. To conclude, we discuss the implications of this model and future work involving evolutionary game theory in cybersecurity/risk management.
