Content-Based Image Retrieval And Its Benefits For The Stock Photography Market, Romano Padeste Dec 1995

Content-Based Image Retrieval And Its Benefits For The Stock Photography Market, Romano Padeste

Theses

The development of powerful low-cost desktop computer systems has changed the pre-press business where tight deadlines must be met per sistently. An increasing number of newspapers and magazines are acquiring, handling, and storing images digitally while the use of hardcopies and slides decreases. Today's computers and high capacity storage-media enable stock pho tography agencies to build digital image databases, giving users fast access to large numbers of images. However, the transition from analog to digital image archives imposes new problems: with thousands of images at hand, the search for a particular image may turn into the search for the needle …

An Investigation Of Alternative Communication Methods To Face To Face Interaction Between Design And Client, Tanya Friedman Dec 1995

An Investigation Of Alternative Communication Methods To Face To Face Interaction Between Design And Client, Tanya Friedman

Theses

As technology becomes increasingly more sophisticated, means and demand for digital communication are increasing. The geographical expansion of the business world has made communication alternatives critical to working together more effectively. Face to face meetings may not be possible or the most cost and time efficient approach. Also, there is a move towards working at home, telecommuting, by using electronic communication for interaction (Fitzgerald 1993). Thus, electronic correspondence is becoming essential and we are witnessing a move towards higher performance and potential for communication alternatives. Knowing the options and their appropriateness is a competitive advantage. "In a information society dominated …

Laser Driven Variable Dot Size Thermal Wax Transfer Printing, Steven Van Korol Dec 1995

Laser Driven Variable Dot Size Thermal Wax Transfer Printing, Steven Van Korol

Theses

A digital image hardcopy device has been designed using a laser exposure mechanism, a pigmented wax /resin donor ink sheet, and an opaque receiver sheet. The writing system relies on image-wise thermal mass transfer of molten ink to the receiver in order to produce high resolution output. With the receiver media and a specially designed donor ribbon being held to a platen through vacuum pressure, a pulsed solid-state diode pumped near IR NdrYAG laser provides the energy necessary to complete the thermal transfer process. By varying pulse width, dot size variation is possible. A mathematical model was developed to explain …

Transient Performance Of Parallel-Flow And Cross-Flow Direct Transfer Type Heat Exchangers With A Step Temperature Change On The Minimum Capacity Rate Fluid Stream, Brian D. Cole

Theses

Parallel and cross-flow with both fluids unmixed, direct transfer type heat exchangers are modeled utilizing a thermal network consisting of nodes and resistors. A commercially available software package, Thermonet, calculates the transient outlet temperatures for a steadystate model introduced to a sudden change (step input) in inlet temperature of the Cmin fluid stream. Both models are validated against analytical solutions provided in literature. Solutions are verified to within a maximum percent mean difference of 4 % of analytical solutions for parallel-flow, and 8 % of analytical solutions for cross-flow heat exchangers. Tables are generated which provide new dimensionless transient outlet …

Iterative Morphological Filters And Application In Document Restoration, Yeqing Zhang Dec 1995

Iterative Morphological Filters And Application In Document Restoration, Yeqing Zhang

Theses

The binary nature of document degradation decides the suitability of morphological methods for restoration. Although the computational burden in morphological filter design can be mitigated by imposing constraints on the filter and employing the morphological filter MAE theorem in an efficient search strategy, the design constraints on the filter limit the performance of single-pass filter. It has been shown that iterative morphological filters can outperform single-pass filters. The investigation of iterative morphological filter design for image restoration is the main contribution of the present thesis. The study of iterative morphological filter design provides the understanding in depth of how filters …

A Field Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Establishing Remote Data Transmission Of Advertising For A Local Newspaper, John Mckeever Jr Nov 1995

A Field Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Establishing Remote Data Transmission Of Advertising For A Local Newspaper, John Mckeever Jr

Theses

In recent years, local newspaper's advertising revenues have been seriously eroded by the presence of competing electronic media. Technological innovation in cable television (CATV), interactive multimedia, broadcast television and Compact Disc-Read-Only Memory (CD-ROM) have proven to be a double-edge sword for local newspaper advertising revenues. On one hand, these technologies provide lower cost, high quality advertisement which target larger, more diverse audiences. On the other hand, the same technological innovations (high speed digital transmission, high quality input and output devices, and the widespread use of portable computing) have created a means for local newspapers to protect their advertising base and …

An Investigation Into World Wide Web Publishing With The Hypertext Markup Language, Eric Joseph Cohen

Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to test and to demonstrate the World Wide Web as a publishing vehicle by creating a Web presence for the School of Printing Management and Sciences. In order to reach this goal, a full understanding of the Hypertext Markup Language must first be realized. Once this is accomplished, issues regarding integration of mixed-media elements within an HTML document were investigated. Once a prototype of the HTML document was accomplished, the mixed-media elements were tested and evaluated for proper integration and contextual cohesiveness. Many issues regarding implementation of mixed-media elements, such as file size …

Signal Detection Using Pseudocolor Scales, Hong Li Nov 1995

Signal Detection Using Pseudocolor Scales, Hong Li

Theses

Historically, gray scale has been the standard method of displaying univariate medical images. A few color scales have been proposed and evaluated, but have had little acceptance by radiologists. It is possible that carefully desired scales might give lesion detection performance that equals gray scale and improves performance of other tasks. We investigated 13 display scales including the physically linear gray scale, the popular rainbow scale and the other 1 1 perceptually linearized scales. One was the hot body (heated object) scale and the other 10 were spiral trajectories in the CIELAB uniform color space. The experiments were performed using …

An Artist's Guide To Four-Color Printing: A Prototype Of A Guide To Educate Artists About Four-Color Offset Printing, Whitney Miller

Theses

Occasionally artists need to have their artwork reproduced. The problem is that most artists do not understand what is involved in the four-color prepress and printing processes and, because of this, do not know how to communicate with printers. Artists often do not realize it is very difficult to make an exact copy of their artwork when it is reproduced by four-color offset lithography and are disappointed with the final printed product. The objective of this thesis project is to educate artists about four-color printing so they can communicate more effectively with printers. A prototype for a booklet entitled An …

Moving Toward Reconciliation, Paula Boronell Nov 1995

Moving Toward Reconciliation, Paula Boronell

Theses

My thesis concept had originally been concerned with gender role playing and the effect this role playing has on the individual. As the work progressed, however, my original concept slowly evolved into something more personal. "Moving Towards Reconciliation" was really about resolving my own questions, and being reconciled with the answers I found. This thesis report describes the route which took me from abstract concept to a personal reconciliation.

Tantalum Oxide Thin Films For Microelectronic Applications, Fang-Xing Jiang Oct 1995

Tantalum Oxide Thin Films For Microelectronic Applications, Fang-Xing Jiang

Theses

There is a critical demand for new dielectric films having higher dielectric constants, higher dielectric strengths and lower leakage currents for applications such as charge storage capacitors for DRAMs in ULSI and low-inductance decoupling capacitors for the control of simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in high-speed switching ULSI chips. Among these candidates for insulators, tantalum pentoxide has received considerable attention. As earlier as in the 1960's, tantalum oxide has been used as the dielectric in discrete capacitors. Recently, several papers have been reported on the electrical properties of Ta205 films grown by various techniques. It has been reported that the electrical …

Theses

This study investigated the printing and wear characteristics of a popular laser exposed plate, the DuPont Howson Silverlith plate, by imaging one half of the plate in an imagesetter and the other half in a contact frame with a halftone film. The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether the method of imaging had an effect on plate durability when run on a press. The comparison between the digital and the film halftones was done at 150 Ipi. The dot areas on the plate were measured twice; once before and once after a press run of 100,000 impressions. Measurements …

Simulation Of A Neural Network-Driven Fuzzy Controller, Karl Ver Schneider Oct 1995

Simulation Of A Neural Network-Driven Fuzzy Controller, Karl Ver Schneider

Theses

A software simulation package was developed to facilitate the analysis of a fuzzy logic tracking system constructed by first training a neural network. The adaptive vector quantization neural network used a competitive learning algorithm to classify control data from a controller in a noisy environment. The neural network memory generated rules for a fuzzy controller by mapping the state of the network into a predetermined fuzzy database. The software is intended to be expanded to allow further analysis of neural dynamics and to compare the performance of the resulting fuzzy controller to conventional controllers.

Characterization Of Digital Film Scanner Systems For Use With Digital Scene Algorithms, Mark Vernacotola Oct 1995

Characterization Of Digital Film Scanner Systems For Use With Digital Scene Algorithms, Mark Vernacotola

Theses

Digital film scanners have been used in the photographic industry for more than a decade. The existence of digital image data has made possible the use of computer-based scene enhancement algorithms to improve image quality. These algorithms are usually device-dependent, functioning properly only for data generated by one scanner system. The complexity of most enhancement algorithms make them costly to develop, thus device-independent scene enhancement algorithms would be valuable. The computation of mathematical transformations to convert scanner data to a device-independent space is possible. The data created using these transformations should serve as the input for device-independent enhancement algorithms. A …

Ad Infinitum, L. Lloyd Jacobs Oct 1995

Theses

This dissertation is presented as an introduction to the theme contained in my present works: The infinite order of chaos. This written work represents my momentary conceptual realization of the theme. I am certain that this realization would continue to evolve into the future., however this paper mutually can only present my current belief and conclusions. There were many times of uncertainty in trying to produce work which would relate to the correspondence between chaos, nature, and mankind. Directly or indirectly. In the journey through the painting process there was both discovery and rediscovery in the forms of technique and …
