Pollinator Habitat On The University Of Richmond Campus: Assessing The Success Of Pollinator Meadows In The Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor, Mary Berner

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

Globally, many insect pollinator populations are declining in response to anthropogenic harms including habitat loss due to land-use change and urbanization, climate change, increasing pesticide use, invasive species introductions, and increased pathogen transmission. In order to protect these insects, and the benefits they provide through pollination, habitat must be protected. Much of the effort to protect insect pollinator habitat is occurring in urban areas, where pollinators may struggle to find the resources they need to survive. The purpose of this study was to assess the success of three pollinator meadows created within the Gambles Mill Eco-Corridor (Eco-Corridor) on the University …

Building Capacity To Effectively Share And Use Data, Robert Blagg

Other QIC-WD Products

In child welfare, the need to utilize meaningful data to ensure that the services provided are effective in supporting children and families represents a continuing challenge. There is a large volume of data from sources that are internal and external to child welfare agencies; and it increases almost exponentially on a regular basis. It is difficult for leaders and practitioners to quickly and meaningfully synthesize, make use of, and share new information with colleagues who need it to make sound decisions. Even when data is transformed into knowledge, challenges remain around the preferred method of ensuring information reaches the individuals …

My mind keeps coming back to the three degrees he earned: bachelor’s in physics and religion, master’s in theological studies, and doctoral in marketing. That certainly doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about John Mittelstaedt, but it underscores the most wondrous part of knowing him and the saddest part of losing him: he was a unique treasure.

Behcet's disease is a chronic, idiopathic vasculitis with multisystem involvement commonly characterized by the classic triad of oral lesions, genital ulcerations, and uveitis. We discuss the case of a 22-year-old woman with a long-standing history of oral ulcers and vulvovaginal burning who presented with acute painless uveitis. With this presentation, there was an initial concern for infectious retinitis for which she was started on systemic antiviral therapy. Subsequent infectious disease workup was ultimately negative. Given her medical history and current presentation, she was diagnosed and treated for an acute inflammatory episode of ocular Behcet's disease. The patient's vision returned to …

Elevated core temperature constitutes an important biomarker for COVID-19 infection; however, no standards currently exist to monitor fever using wearable peripheral temperature sensors. Evidence that sensors could be used to develop fever monitoring capabilities would enable large-scale health-monitoring research and provide high-temporal resolution data on fever responses across heterogeneous populations. We launched the TemPredict study in March of 2020 to capture continuous physiological data, including peripheral temperature, from a commercially available wearable device during the novel coronavirus pandemic. We coupled these data with symptom reports and COVID-19 diagnosis data. Here we report findings from the first 50 subjects who reported …

Background: Regional changes to cortical thickness in individuals with neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) can be estimated using specialized neuroimaging software. However, the presence of cerebral small vessel disease, focal atrophy, and cortico-subcortical stroke lesions, pose significant challenges that increase the likelihood of misclassification errors and segmentation failures. Purpose: The main goal of this study was to examine a correction procedure developed for enhancing FreeSurfer’s (FS’s) cortical thickness estimation tool, particularly when applied to the most challenging MRI obtained from participants with chronic stroke and CVD, with varying degrees of neurovascular lesions and brain atrophy. Methods: In 155 CVD participants …

Financial Reporting And Moral Sentiments, Radhika Lunawat, Timothy W. Shields, Gregory B. Waymire

ESI Working Papers

Dating back at least to Adam Smith (1790), philosophers and researchers expect that people will behave differently when they know their actions are observable to others. We hypothesize that financial reporting reveals managers’ actions and leads them to take different actions that are better aligned with investor interests. We posit that the reason why is the activation of our internal mental self-evaluation that Smith refers to as an “Impartial Spectator.” We test this hypothesis with an experiment in which we manipulate the availability of a financial report that makes managerial actions transparent. Our evidence shows that financial reporting leads a …

MicroRNAs are important regulators in plant developmental processes and stress responses. In this study, we generated a series of maize STTM166 transgenic plants. Knock-down of miR166 resulted in various morphological changes, including rolled leaves, enhanced abiotic stress resistance, inferior yield-related traits, vascular pattern and epidermis structures, tassel architecture, as well as abscisic acid (ABA) level elevation and indole acetic acid (IAA) level reduction in maize. To profile miR166 regulated genes, we performed RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analysis. A total of 178 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 118 up-regulated and 60 down-regulated genes. These DEGs were strongly enriched in cell …

A majority of New Hampshire residents say they will get a COVID-19 vaccine when one is available, however, some groups remain unwilling to get a vaccine. Respondents most frequently cite their PCP, Dr. Fauci, New Hampshire epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan, or their friends and family as people whose endorsement would make them more likely to get vaccinated. Those who are currently unwilling to get vaccinated say they are not likely to be convinced to do so by anyone. Republicans and Democrats disagree about the pandemic as a majority of Republicans believe the danger posed by COVID-19 is exaggerated and has …
