State Ownership And Banks Information Rents: Evidence From China, Fengyan Ru, Qi Liang, Wei Wang
State Ownership And Banks Information Rents: Evidence From China, Fengyan Ru, Qi Liang, Wei Wang
Business Faculty Publications
In a lending relationship, a bank with an information advantage regarding its client tends to hold up the borrower and charge higher interest rates. We conjecture that state-owned enterprises (SOEs), with worse information asymmetry, are subject to greater information
rents. State-owned banks place less emphasis on information production and hence extract lower rents compared to profit maximizing private banks. We use the decline of loan interest rates around the borrowers’ equity initial public offerings (IPOs) as the proxy of banks’ information rents. We find SOEs in China experience
larger declines in loan interest rates around their IPOs; the central government-controlled …

Simultaneous Economic Dispatch And Frequency Regulation Of Power Systems, Lingling Fan, Zhixin Miao
USF Patents
Various examples are provided for feedback control of power systems. The feedback control can provide simultaneous frequency regulation and economic operation of a power system. In one example, a method includes obtaining a frequency difference associated with a generator of a power system; determining an output power adjustment based at least in part upon the frequency difference and a cost function associated with the generator; and providing a power command to a secondary frequency control of the generator, the power command based upon the output power adjustment. In another example, a generator control system includes a primary frequency controller configured …

Fusion Proteins Of Collagen-Binding Domain And Parathyroid Hormone, Robert C. Gensure, Joshua Sakon, Osamu Matsushita, Tulasi Ponnapakkam
Patents Granted
Fusion proteins containing active agonist or antagonist fragments of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid hormone related peptide (PTHrP) coupled to a collagen-binding domain are presented. The fusion proteins can be used to promote bone growth, to promote hair growth, to prevent cancer metastasis to bone, to promote immune reconstitution with a bone marrow stem cell transplant, to promote mobilization of bone marrow stem cells for collection for autologous stem cell transplant, and to treat renal osteodystrophy. Pharmaceutical agents comprising a collagen-binding polypeptide segment linked to a non-peptidyl PTH/PTHrP receptor agonist or antagonist are also presented.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disease in children in western countries. Adverse early-life exposures are associated with higher liver fat percentages in children. Differential DNA methylation may underlie these associations. We aimed to identify differential DNA methylation in newborns and children associated with liver fat accumulation in childhood. We also examined whether DNA methylation at 22 cytosine-phosphate-guanine sites (CpGs) associated with adult non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with liver fat in children. Within a population-based prospective cohort study, we analyzed epigenome-wide DNA methylation data of 785 newborns and 344 10-year-old children in relation …

Urban horticulture describes economically viable horticultural production activities conducted in a city or suburb. It is a growing segment of horticulture in the United States as well as in developing countries, where the enormous growth of megalopolis is not backed by a simultaneous increase of farmland or agricultural productivity. Today, urban horticulture includes food sovereignty in underprivileged neighborhoods, increased availability of vegetables and fruits in big cities, healthy and diverse diets, improved food safety, low transportation costs, efficient resource use, and the mitigation of environmental impacts of horticultural production such as the emission of greenhouse gases. The workshop “Urban horticulture: …
