NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
This article details the latest UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Guatamala and its compliance with 2008 recommendations. While the official government delegation indicated that progress has been made in addressing peace, justice, security, and hunger, members of civil society organizations stated that the report was "superficial" and that it failed to address the abuses committed by oil and mining corporations.

A Critique Of The Representation Of Violence In American Literature:, Tatiana E. Knight
A Critique Of The Representation Of Violence In American Literature:, Tatiana E. Knight
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to draw new insights on Thomas Berger’s classic American novel, Little Big Man, and his representation of fictional violence that is a substantial aspect of any text on the Indian Wars and “Custer’s Last Stand”. History’s major world wars led to shifts in the political climate and a noted change in the way that violence was represented in the arts. Historical, fictional, and cinematic treatments of “Custer’s Last Stand” and violence were each considered in relation to the text. Berger's version of the famed story is a revision of history that shows the …

Recent mass shootings have again brought out the "violence is a disease" crowd. Their thinking is that if we reduce the availability of firearms, we will decrease violence.

Research Brief: "Protective Factors And Risk Modification Of Violence In Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research studies non-combat related aggressive behavior in service members and the influence of protective factors. Veterans with protective factors, such as having positive social support, are less likely to engage in violence, and therefore expanding social support programs are beneficial. Future research should consider exploring various components of work life in relation to potential aggression.

Preventing Violence Among Employees Of The Same Work Organization: Evaluation Of A Participatory Intervention, Julie Dussault, Nathalie Jauvin, Michel Vézina, Renée Bourbonnais
Remembering As A Source Of Creation In The Poetry Of Ezra Pound And H.D. And The Musical Representations Of The Holocaust By Arnold Schoenberg And Steve Reich, Ruth J. Jacobs
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This project explores the complex relationship between language and violence. Many theorists, such as Elaine Scarry, argue that language is silenced by violence and that extreme trauma inherently defies representation. Despite the impossibility of representing trauma, its preservation is a cultural and historical necessity. I am going to examine the different ways extreme violence is depicted in both poetry and music and the complex moral issues that are raised by these representations. Ezra Pound wrote The Pisan Cantos while imprisoned in a cage at the DTC in Pisa. I plan on exploring the role of personal and cultural memory in …

Hidden Violence Is Silent Rape: Sexual And Gender-Based Violence In Refugees, Asylum Seekers And Undocumented Migrants In Belgium And The Netherlands, Ines Keygnaert, Nicole Vettenbu, Marleen Temmerman
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Although women, young people and refugees are vulnerable to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) worldwide, little evidence exists concerning SGBV against refugees in Europe. Using community-based participatory research, 223 in-depth interviews were conducted with refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands. Responses were analysed using framework analysis. The majority of the respondents were either personally victimised or knew of a close peer being victimised since their arrival in the European Union. A total of 332 experiences of SGBV were reported, mostly afflicted on them by (ex-)partners or asylum professionals. More than half of the reported violent …

Violence And Political Incivility, David B. Lyons

The charge to our panel refers to "the deterioration of the political conversation," to "deep ... divisions in society," and to recent violence- especially the tragic events in Tuscon. It asks us to identify "the virtues required.for our common life as citizens in a democracy and for civil democratic conversation." I shall offer observations and conjectures on each issue, stressing the historical background.
Let me suggest, first,. that the nonconstructive and increasingly abusive character of our political discourse may be relatively mild manifestations of an even more troubling malaise of our society- commonplace unlawful violence. I wish to draw your …
Practicing Paradise: Contemplative Awareness And Ecological Renewal, Douglas E. Christie
Practicing Paradise: Contemplative Awareness And Ecological Renewal, Douglas E. Christie
Theological Studies Faculty Works
What would it mean for Christians to take seriously the idea that we are called to practice paradise, to inhabit the world as if “everything is in fact paradise”? In the Christian contemplative tradition, one finds recurring attention to the notion that paradise is somehow knowable, graspable, and inhabitable in this present reality, and that this experience of paradise can be incorporated into a meaningful spiritual practice. This essay asks whether, in a moment of deepening ecological degradation, the contemplative practice of paradise might help us learn again how to imagine the world as whole, inhabit it with tenderness and …

Intimate Terrorism And Technology: There's An App For That, Justine A. Dunlap

Technology enhances the ability of the domestic violence perpetrator. It also holds the promise of assisting domestic violence survivors in their quest for safety. This is true in practical, daily ways and is becoming increasingly true in the legal treatment of these cases. Perpetrators can use technology to stalk and find their victims; survivors can use it to access necessary information to get away from their batterers. Laws are being amended to take into account cyber-enhanced domestic violence techniques. Domestic or intimate terrorists are among the class of criminals targeted for use of GPS monitoring. This article discusses the way …

‘Collaboration and Coercion’ addresses the systemic and individual concerns that arise when family members that have experienced abuse enter into the collaborative law process. A form of alternative dispute resolution, collaborative law is a method of resolving disputes without engagement of the legal system. The author addresses the structural and cultural difficulties that survivors of abuse encounter throughout the process as well as the ethical concerns that are raised when collaborative practitioners accept cases where the parties have a history of coercion within the intimate relationship.

'Deep Cleavages That Divide': The Origins And Development Of Ethnic Violence In Rwanda, Deborah Mayersen
Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)
While Hutu and Tutsi subgroups have existed since pre-colonial times in Rwanda, major interethnic violence is a much more recent phenomenon. During the 1950s, issues of race, power and privilege became highly politicised. As decolonisation loomed, the intersections between race and power became bitterly contested, leading to the 1959 Hutu Uprising. The Hutu Uprising was the first major outbreak of interethnic violence in Rwanda, however following this, such violence recurred repeatedly. This article explores key issues that contributed to and emerged from the Hutu Uprising, including the conflation of political and ethnic issues, perceptions of the Tutsi minority as a …

Atrocity, Entitlement, And Personhood In Property, Daniel J. Sharfstein
Atrocity, Entitlement, And Personhood In Property, Daniel J. Sharfstein
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
For a generation since Margaret Jane Radin’s classic article Property and Personhood, scholars have viewed personhood as a conception of property that affirms autonomy, dignity, and basic civil rights, a progressive alternative to traditional, more economically focused property theories. This article presents a fundamental challenge to personhood as a progressive approach to property. It shows that personhood claims often derive from violent and other harmful acts committed in the course of acquiring and owning property. This persistent and pervasive connection between personhood and violence — the “atrocity value†in property — upends core assumptions about the American property tradition and …

Show And Tell: Using Restorative Practices And Asset Based Community Development To Address Issues Of Safety And Violence, Tera Lynn Mcintosh
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore how restorative practices could help increase the social fabric within communities in order to help solve complex community problems. Although literature on restorative practices is bountiful for the purposes of restorative justice and restorative practices in schools, there is little literature on how to use restorative practices to create more restorative communities or neighborhoods. For the purpose of this study I looked at the issue of violence and safety within a particular community and implemented a framework of restorative practices that focused on asset based community development and building healthier relationships. I …
