This article details the latest UN Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Guatamala and its compliance with 2008 recommendations. While the official government delegation indicated that progress has been made in addressing peace, justice, security, and hunger, members of civil society organizations stated that the report was "superficial" and that it failed to address the abuses committed by oil and mining corporations.

Reconciliation In A Community-Based Restorative Justice Intervention, David K. Androff Dec 2012

Reconciliation In A Community-Based Restorative Justice Intervention, David K. Androff

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRCs) are among the primary means for promoting reconciliation in communities recovering from violent conflict. However, there is a lack of consensus about what reconciliation means or how it is best achieved. In a qualitative study of the first TRC in the U.S., this research interviewed victims of racial violence who participated in the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission (GTRC), a community-based restorative justice intervention. Findings reveal that participants conceptualized reconciliation as a multileveled process, that different concepts of reconciliation influenced assessments of the success and limitations of the GTRC, and indicate how community-based restorative interventions …

When It Rains, It Pours: The Violence Against Women Act's Failure To Provide Shelter From The Storm Of Domestic Violence., Alyse Faye Haugen

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The threat of abuse affects women of all socioeconomic levels, educations, and zip codes. For centuries, women were second-class citizens in the eyes of society and the government. Women could not access resources to prevent violence and subsequently were denied essential victim services. The passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994 expressed the government’s commitment to ending domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and other gender-based violent crimes. Although VAWA exists, violence against women continues to be pervasive, devastating women’s lives daily. Victims of domestic violence face several issues. These include protecting children from abuse, finding and securing …

Safety First -In Search Of Justice -School & Law Enforcement Agency Partnerships, Michael Anthony Pickett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

ABSTRACT

Educational problems are many and varied. At-risk students, achievement gaps and poor student outcomes are hot topics that beg for improvement in equity across the board and stand in the way of achieving excellence. These educative, albeit, social justice issues are not new, but rather, are old problems revisited (Kaestle, 1983; Morrison, 2003). Additionally, the issue of violence in schools is also recognized as not only a social justice problem but also a public health problem (Mercy & O'Carroll, 1988) and is perhaps the most pressing societal issue related to children and youth today. "Safe schools are the concern …

“The People! Demand! Social Justice!:” About Social Change In Israel And Palestine, Assaf Harel

Journal of Contemporary Anthropology

Written in the midst of an 18 months ethnographic fieldwork conducted among religiously motivated Jewish settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, this field notes article engages with the question of social change. I anchor the article around cases of settlement expansion and settlers' violence as a means to discuss the Jewish settlement movement in the occupied territories vis-à-vis the recent Israeli mass-protest movement for social change. Pondering upon the problematics of social change as a constant, the juxtaposition of the two social movements enables me to frame the question of social change as inextricably tied to violence and …

A Critique Of The Representation Of Violence In American Literature:, Tatiana E. Knight

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to draw new insights on Thomas Berger’s classic American novel, Little Big Man, and his representation of fictional violence that is a substantial aspect of any text on the Indian Wars and “Custer’s Last Stand”. History’s major world wars led to shifts in the political climate and a noted change in the way that violence was represented in the arts. Historical, fictional, and cinematic treatments of “Custer’s Last Stand” and violence were each considered in relation to the text. Berger's version of the famed story is a revision of history that shows the …

The Price They Pay: Protecting The Mother-Child Relationship Through The Use Of Prison Nurseries And Residential Parenting Programs, Anne E. Jbara Oct 2012

The Price They Pay: Protecting The Mother-Child Relationship Through The Use Of Prison Nurseries And Residential Parenting Programs, Anne E. Jbara

Indiana Law Journal

Over the past century, while advocates of prison nurseries have applauded their individual and societal benefits, opponents have criticized their touchy-feely undertones, arguing that children do not belong behind bars. New York instituted the first modern prison nursery program in 1901 at its Bedford Hills facility, and the nursery has existed ever since. The federal government and a number of other states have followed suit in developing programs that, to varying degrees, give mothers and infants an opportunity to remain together until the infant reaches a particular age. The requirements for such programs vary by state but generally only permit …

Going Nowhere Fast (Or Furious): The Nonexistent U.S. Firearms Trafficking Statute And The Rise Of Mexican Drug Cartel Violence, Stewart M. Young

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Drug trafficking violence in Mexico, now reaching epidemic proportions, greatly impacts both the Mexican and United States governments. Despite the escalation of the "War on Drugs, " drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States continues largely unabated, stifling tourism revenue and lawful economic opportunities, and causing violence previously unknown in Mexico. Thus far, the United States' efforts to deal with this drug trafficking and violence include the recent debacle of Operation Fast and Furious. News regarding this Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives'(ATF) operation shocked citizens and lawmakers alike, as Fast and Furious allowed firearms to "walk" down …

Using three case studies as examples, Mighdoll illustrates the emotional problems encountered by victims after their abusers are removed from the situation. Often the victim has become so dependent on the abuser that independent living is no longer possible and relocation is necessary. The team efforts of the task force in Palm Beach County to work with these problems are described in detail.

Assessing The Impact Of The Department Of Health (Dhs) Division Of Aging Services’ At-Risk Adult Crime Tactics (Act) Certification On Professionals, Tanya L. Parker Aug 2012

Assessing The Impact Of The Department Of Health (Dhs) Division Of Aging Services’ At-Risk Adult Crime Tactics (Act) Certification On Professionals, Tanya L. Parker

Public Health Theses

Background: Adults over 60 years of age in the United States are increasing in total percentage of the population and will continue to do so as each wave of the post-war, baby-boom generation enters older adulthood. Though elder mistreatment (EM) has undoubtedly been a public health problem for years, only recently has it been recognized as such. Violence prevention programs that focus on EM are needed to curb this rising epidemic. One such program, the At-Risk Adult Crime Tactics (ACT) Certification Training, is an at-risk, adult (elderly or disabled adults) prevention program designed to increase professional awareness of this population …

"It Was Awful, But It Was Politics": Crittenden County And The Demise Of African American Political Participation, Krista Michelle Jones

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite the vast scholarship that exists discussing why Democrats sought restrictive suffrage laws, little attention has been given by historians to examine how concern over local government drove disfranchisement measures. This study examines how the authors of disfranchisement laws were influenced by what was happening in Crittenden County where African Americans, because of their numerical majority, wielded enough political power to determine election outcomes. In the years following the Civil War, African Americans established strong communities, educated themselves, secured independent institutions, and most importantly became active in politics. Because of their numerical majority, Crittenden's African Americans were elected to county …

Fanon: Violence And The Search For Human Dignity, Winston Langley Jul 2012

Fanon: Violence And The Search For Human Dignity, Winston Langley

Winston E. Langley

Fanon informs us that interdependence in economics, politics, ethics, or aesthetics (and/or the social institutions with which they are associated) encompasses the interdependence of psyches in the form of confrontations, threats, forbearances, negotiations, accommodations, control, and domination, as persons and groups of persons seek to influence the conduct and shape the social being of others. Today, global and sub-global interdependence is often neither based on reciprocity nor equality. Rather, what one generally finds in the multiplicities of continuing and new (sometimes, instantaneous) connections, is a system of non-reciprocal, imposed interdependence, where one's peace is another's subjugation, one's wealth another's poverty, …

Research Brief: "Protective Factors And Risk Modification Of Violence In Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research studies non-combat related aggressive behavior in service members and the influence of protective factors. Veterans with protective factors, such as having positive social support, are less likely to engage in violence, and therefore expanding social support programs are beneficial. Future research should consider exploring various components of work life in relation to potential aggression.

Motion Pictures As An Agent Of Socialization: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Demography Of Population On Indian Silver Screen And Reported Crime News In Pakistan (1976 To 2006), Erum Hafeez Aslam

Business Review

This study aims to examine and analyze role of motion pictures as an agent of socialization. It focuses the contribution of Indian movies to the increase of violent crimes and criminals in Pakistani society across the four decades (i.e. 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s) through favorable rather glamorized depiction of violence and perpetrators of violence. It is arbitrarily assumed that violence is often projected on silver screen as a quick and easy solution to social injustice and class discrimination in the blockbusters of Bollywood and Lollywood. Five top grossing Indian films selected through popularity charts and youth polls are thus …

Revenge And Its Implications: Literati Discourse Of Justice In Late Qing And Modern Chinese Fiction, Yoojin Soh Jun 2012

Revenge And Its Implications: Literati Discourse Of Justice In Late Qing And Modern Chinese Fiction, Yoojin Soh

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My dissertation explores literati criticism of injustice embedded in revenge narratives. Ranging from the late Qing to modern China, this research project elaborates on the existing scholarship regarding historical and cultural meanings of revenge to demonstrate the use of earlier textual sources by intellectual writers to embody their ideas and strategies. The literati community inherited a keen sense of injustice in society from previous writing practice and passed it down to later generations. Revenge narratives were able to reinforce this intellectual tradition because the authors of social criticism could use fiction to express their anger and frustration over injustices suffered …

The Effects Of Gang Violence On Inequality In Costa Rica, El Salvador And Nicaragua, Amanda Milena Alvarez

Open Access Theses

As gang violence has become a prominent issue in Central America, understanding its root causes becomes critical to its reduction. This analysis seeks to examine the effects of economic growth and inequality on increasing gang violence in the democratic countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Through the use of simple regressions the relationships between economic growth, inequality and gang violence were examined. The results found that inequality and economic growth were statistically correlated in all three countries. Although, there was positive correlation between inequality and economic growth in Costa Rica, and there was a negative relationship in El …
