School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
I LIKE RECREATIONAL SUMMER reading and quickly go through the newest books of my favorite contemporary authors and look for titles with similar themes. Readers' advisory librarians use a plethora of book resources to help readers like me find new authors and interesting titles. The books in the "Genreflecting Advisory Series" published by Libraries Unlimited are key resources, with over 20 volumes that provide a guide to reading in every genre--from historical fiction to Westerns to romances. Other well-established book-finding sites include NoveList and WhichBook.

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
Project RAISE is a federally funded Arts Education Model Program Development and Dissemination Grant (AEMPDD). The proposal was granted funding for three years from 2001-2002 until 2003-2004. The proposal had two strands, one investigating the impact of a visual art strategy and the second examining the impact of Readers Theatre on reading comprehension. Findings show that: Students whose teachers used the program with high fidelity outperformed low fidelity classrooms in writing performance, aesthetic response writing, and the California Standards Test (CST) in English Language Arts. Teachers who adapted the program to their own context maintained involvement and their students tended …

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
The Fall Progress Report offers an overview of student baseline achievement. Student achievement will be interpreted through two separate comparisons. In each section we start with a comparison of this year’s baseline and last year’s baseline; a between cohorts comparison. This comparison will show whether the starting point of Reading First schools is higher this year as we anticipated. A second comparison focuses on following student achievement from spring of 2004-2005 school year to fall of 2005-2006. This within cohort comparison shows the sustainability of last year’s gains and the effects of the Summer Reading Setback.

Thi report summarizes the results of the first year of the Reading First Initiative in Nebraska. Results show that teachers and schools have made a real effort to change. Student performance in the earlier grades has shown great promise for the following years, however, growth in fluency and comprehension in grades 2 and 3 were not as impressive and require additional attention. Overall, students make at least a year’s progress in most schools and most demographic groups. Schools can make much better use of the data they were collecting and need further direction in this area The assessment results were …
Vygotskyan Inner Speech And The Reading Process, John F. Ehrich
Vygotskyan Inner Speech And The Reading Process, John F. Ehrich
Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)
There is a paucity of Vygotskian influenced inner speech research in relation to the reading process. Those few studies which have examined Vygotskian inner speech from a reading perspective tend to support the notion that inner speech is an important covert function that is crucial to the reading process and to reading acquisition in general. However, Vygotskian notions on inner speech, in particular, syntactic and semantic aspects of inner speech (e.g., predication, word sense and agglutination), have not been investigated in relation to the study of the decoding aspects of silent reading. In this paper, an argument is presented that …

This article is a description of a teaching strategy that we have experimented with promising results as a motivational tool. The strategy uses Karaoke as a tool to build and enhance reading behaviors such as fluency and motivation as a twofold purpose for struggling readers. An audio and video sample of children engaged in reading and singing using Karaoke is enclosed. Some modified Karaoke instructional approaches are mentioned for a whole group/classroom use.
