We present near-infrared spectra of late-phase (>200 days) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) taken at the Subaru Telescope. The [Fe II] line of SN 2003hv shows a clear flat-topped feature, while that of SN 2005W shows a less prominent flatness. In addition, a large shift in their line center, varying from -3000 to 1000 km s-1 with respect to the host galaxies, is seen. Such a shift suggests the occurrence of an off-center, nonspherical explosion in the central region and provides important, new constraints on the explosion models of SNe Ia.

We present results based on mid-infrared (3.6-30 μm) observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope of the nearby Type IIP supernova 2005af. We report the first ever detection of the SiO molecule in a Type IIP supernova. Together with the detection of the CO fundamental, this is an exciting finding as it may signal the onset of dust condensation in the ejecta. From a wealth of fine-structure lines we provide abundance estimates for stable Ni, Ar, and Ne that, via spectral synthesis, may be used to constrain nucleosynthesis models.

Merck sought protection under a statutory exemption from claims of patent infringement brought by Integra Lifesciences. The Court held unanimously that the safe harbor contained in 35 U.S.C. § 271(e)(1) protected the use of patented inventions used in preclinical research where the results were not submitted to the FDA. The Court's interpretation of the safe harbor provision broadened protection for those engaged in drug research at a substantial cost to patent-holders.

Let X be an H-space of the homotopy type of a connected, finite CW-complex, f : X→X any map and pk : X→X the kth power map. Duan proved that pkf : X → X has a fixed point if k ≥ 2. We give a new, short and elementary proof of this. This paper presents a pilot study of benefits derived from information and communications technology (ICT) adoption and use in medical practices in regional Australia. The study involved 122 regional medical practitioners. The results show that like the more general small businesssector, the perception of certain benefits is associated with the size of the practice (in terms of employee levels) and/ or the gender of the respondent practitioner.

Community-based healthcare organisations manage competing, and often conflicting, priorities. These conflicts can arise from the multiple roles these organisations take up, and from the diverse range of stakeholders to whom they must be responsive. Often such conflicts may be titled conflicts of interest; however, what precisely constitutes such conflicts and what should be done about them is not always clear. Clarity about the duties owed by organisations and the roles they assume can help identify and manage some of these conflicts.
