The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. This thesis was aimed at the development of a finite element based software package for the analysis and design of prestressed concrete slabs. Many of the existing packages used in this area carry out a simplified two dimensional analysis of the slab which does not account for the secondary stresses set up by the presence of openings and notches in the slab. Networks are growing in popularity, as wireless communication hardware, both fixed and mobile, becomes more common and affordable. The Monash Suburban Ad-Hoc Network (SAHN) project has devised a system that provides a highly secure and survivable ad-hoc network, capable of delivering broadband speeds to co-operating users within a fixed environment, such as a residential neighbourhood, or a campus. The SAHN can be used by residents within a community to exchange information, to share access to the Internet, providing last-mile access, or for local telephony and video conferencing. Managing the effects of changing requirements remains one of the greatest challenges of enterprise software development. The iterative and incremental model provides an expedient framework for addressing such concerns. This paper presents a set of metrics - Mutation Index, Component Set, Dependency Index - and a methodology to measure the effects of requirement changes in the analysis workflow from one iteration to another. Results from a sample case study are included to highlight a usage scenario. Future directions of our work based on this mechanism are also discussed.

This paper describes flexible tools for specifying design variations that are based on nonuniform profile tolerance definitions. These tools specify bounds of design performance that can be used for negotiation among engineers in a collaborative design process. These specification methods allow for the capture of many different design functions that are not easily described with current tool designs. In addition, these specification methods lend themselves to efficient verification methods. Profile tolerance definitions provide the most general variation controls for complex mechanical surfaces. The standards-based reform movement in education that began in the 1980s has evolved. In the 1990s, the focus was on producing subject-area content standards and modifying instruction. Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) provides powerful techniques for modeling and implementing enterprise software systems. To leverage its full potential, AOP needs to be perceived in the context of existing methodologies such as Object Oriented Programming (OOP). This paper addresses an important question for AOP practitioners - how to decide whether a component is best modeled as a class or an aspect? Towards that end, we present an indicator metric, the Crosscutting Score and a method for its calculation and interpretation. We will illustrate our approach through a sample calculation.

The role of the learning designer has expanded from the commonly known activities of an instructional designer to incorporate a range of new roles, largely prompted by new technologies. In this paper, we articulate an approach that further extends the role of the learning designer to encompass evaluation and design-based research, in collaboration with the subject matter expert. Such collaboration is professionally enhancing for both parties, and adds to the sum of knowledge on the effective design of learning environments, by documenting and disseminating the learning design process.

Despite the importance of selection for quality characteristics in plant improvement programmes, literature on experimental design and statistical analysis for these traits is scarce. Most quality traits are obtained from multi-phase experiments in which plant varieties are first grown in a field trial then further processed in the laboratory. Lower-limb prostheses are used to restore amputee's walking. Monolimb is one of the designs referring to socket and the shank being molded into one piece of thermoplastic material. This article considers the design of early generation variety trials with a prespecified spatial correlation structure and introduces a new class of partially replicated designs called p-rep designs in which the plots of standard varieties are replaced by additional plots of test lines. We show how efficient p-rep designs can be readily generated using the modified Reactive TABU search algorithm. The expected and realized genetic gain of p-rep and grid plot designs is compared in a simulation study.

This paper describes a software tool developed for estimation of the field moisture content of subgrade materials. Subgrade behavior is directly related to its moisture content. Unfortunately, some approaches of estimating field moisture content are too complex to be used in routine design. In this paper, the authors attempt to provide an approach that is easy to use. The purpose of this chapter is to provide fundamental background for the design of thermomechanical microactuators. Actuation has been a particularly challenging aspect of microsystem development. Many actuation approaches used at the macro level, such as hydraulics, pneumatics, electric motors, internal combustion engines and turbines, are either too difficult to fabricate at the micro level or do not work well at that scale. Electrostatic attraction is one approach that has been widely used for actuation of microsystems; however, electrostatic actuators tend to have high voltage requirements and low output force capabilities.
