Small Grains And Field Peas: 2007 Variety Recommendations (2006 Crop Performance Results), Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Circulars

Variety selection is a fundamental element in a sound crop production program. This report contains variety recommendations, descriptions, and yield data for the spring-seeded small grains – hard red spring wheat, oat, and barley, along with the fall-seeded small grain –hard red winter wheat. Key factors in variety selection include yield, yield stability, maturity, straw strength, height, test weight, quality, and disease resistance. Yield is an important factor; however, a variety with good disease resistance, straw strength, and high grain quality may be more profitable in some cases than the highest yielding variety. Disease resistance information is based on reactions …

Microarray Analysis Of Late-Season Velvetleaf (Abutilon Theophrasti) Effect On Corn, David P. Horvath, Robert Gulden, Sharon A. Clay Dec 2006

Microarray Analysis Of Late-Season Velvetleaf (Abutilon Theophrasti) Effect On Corn, David P. Horvath, Robert Gulden, Sharon A. Clay

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Microarray analysis was used to identify changes in gene expression in corn leaves collected from plants at the V11–14 growth stage that resulted from competition with velvetleaf. The plants were grown in field plots under adequate N (addition of 220 kg N ha1) and irrigation to minimize N and water stress. Consequently, only differences resulting from competition for micronutrients, light, and perhaps allelopathic stress were anticipated. Genes involved in carbon and nitrogen utilization, photosynthesis, growth and development, oxidative stress, signal transduction, responses to auxin and ethylene, and zinc transport were repressed in corn growing in competition with velvetleaf. …

Fat Mass Gain Is Lower In Calcium-Supplemented Than In Unsupplemented Preschool Children With Low Dietary Calcium Intakes, Elizabeth D. Dejongh, Teresa L. Binkley, Bonny Specker Nov 2006

Fat Mass Gain Is Lower In Calcium-Supplemented Than In Unsupplemented Preschool Children With Low Dietary Calcium Intakes, Elizabeth D. Dejongh, Teresa L. Binkley, Bonny Specker

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

BACKGROUND: Dietary calcium may play a role in the stimulation of lipolysis and the inhibition of lipogenesis, thereby reducing body fat.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether an association existed between change in percentage body fat (%BF) or fat mass and calcium intake in children aged 3-5 y.
DESIGN: A secondary analysis of a 1-y randomized calcium and activity trial in 178 children was conducted. Three-day diet records and 48-h accelerometer readings were obtained at 0, 6, and 12 mo. Body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at 0 and 12 mo.
RESULTS: The decrease in %BF was …

Using The Balanced Scorecard For Ranch Planning And Management:Setting Strategy And Measuring Performance, Barry H. Dunn, Roger N. Gates, Jack Davis, Agustin Arzeno

SDSU Extension Circulars

The key to business success—whether operating a ranch or a Fortune 500 company—lies in management and planning. It’s the ability to have foresight, to carefully evaluate and choose appropriate new concepts and technologies, and to implement a well thought- out plan that complements all aspects of the business. The highly-respected former CEO and chairman of General Electric Jack Welch put it this way: Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion. How does that description apply to you? Are you a visionary business leader for your ranch enterprise? Or …

Working Lands Agri-Environmental Policy Options And Issues For The Next U.S. Farm Bill, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

U.S. farm legislation is due to be updated in 2007, to become effective with the 2008 crop year. Major questions surround the role of environmental or conservation provisions in the new Federal farm bill. In this paper, I first present some background on the evolution of U.S. 'agri-environmental policies'-policies encompassing conservation of agriculture's natural resources and agriculture's impact on the environment. I follow that with a brief discussion of the concept of' multifunctionality' in agriculture, a concept that increasingly is driving discussions of agri-environmental policy options in Europe and the U.S. The subsequent section of the paper contains discussion of …

The Effect Of Early Vs Normal Calf Weaning On Feedlot Performance And Herd Management: A Northern Plains Case Study, Scott Fausti, Douglas Landblom, Patricia Johnson, Martin Beutler, Roger N. Gates, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, Staeve I. Paisley Sep 2006

The Effect Of Early Vs Normal Calf Weaning On Feedlot Performance And Herd Management: A Northern Plains Case Study, Scott Fausti, Douglas Landblom, Patricia Johnson, Martin Beutler, Roger N. Gates, Robin R. Salverson, Hubert H. Patterson, Staeve I. Paisley

Economics Staff Paper Series

A two-year study of early vs. normal weaning of steer calves was conducted in the western Dakotas in 2003-04. Economic and statistical analysis of calf feedlot performance and carcass quality was conducted. The analysis concludes that early weaning improves feedlot production efficiency, and reduces per day and per pound feedlot production costs. However, early weaned steers are lighter at slaughter; therefore, early weaning lowers carcass revenue relative to normal weaning. The early weaning effect on the profitability of retaining calves through the feedlot stage was not statistically significant. However, statistical analysis indicates that early weaning does have a positive effect …

Dealing With Drought Stress In Home Lawns, Leo C. Schleicher, Shane M. Andersen Aug 2006

Dealing With Drought Stress In Home Lawns, Leo C. Schleicher, Shane M. Andersen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Although cool-season turfgrasses in South Dakota typically suffer from summer stress during July and August, many lawns in the state experience stress earlier than normal during drought. You can make cultural modifications in lawn management to reduce injury or loss of turf and to conserve water resources. The majority of South Dakota lawns are a composite of one or more cool-season turfgrasses plus a number of assorted plant species considered weeds. Although Kentucky bluegrass is generally the major component in turfgrass seed mixtures purchased by homeowners, perennial ryegrass and fineleaf fescues are often included. Fineleaf fescues, such as hard fescue, …

2006 Winter Wheat Variety Yield Results And Planting Tips, John Rickertsen, Thandiwe Nleya, Amir Ibrahim

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

It was a tough year for winter wheat in South Dakota in 2006. The major winter wheat growing areas in the central and western part of the state suffered serious drought from planting until harvest. Most areas were very dry at planting, which delayed germination until rain came later in the fall. This led to plants with small crowns and little fall growth. Conditions did not improve in the spring with several locations having the driest January to June on record. Yields from the Crop Performance Testing Program averaged 47 bu/A statewide, but many locations were not harvested due to …

Yes, we can expect our lives to be “touched” by an avian influenza pandemic. Our diets and daily routines will be altered, and the concern of all of us will be to protect ourselves and our families. Since we don’t know how serious the pandemic may be in our communities, it only pays to prepare. Advance planning can make our homes safe and comfortable. It’s not an overwhelming task, and there are many guidelines to help. Look at it this way: The better we are prepared, the better we will respond and rebound, and when it’s all over, the better …
