Quashnet River Survey Dec 2006

Quashnet River Survey

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Students from Mashpee High School have been studying water quality of local rivers for a number of years. In the past, the primary focus was on two rivers that flow through the town: the Quashnet River, and Quaker Run. This school year (2006-07) the Mashpee River was added as the third watershed of interest. Each of three Earth Science classes adopted and studied one of the rivers. Students sampled each stream at headwaters and lower reaches for: macroinvertebrates, water chemistry (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, and turbidity) and stream flow (velocity and volume). Data were analyzed, and PowerPoint presentations were …

Following Fall Brook Dec 2006

Following Fall Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

This was a study of two sites along Fall Brook, located in Middleborough, MA. Fall Brook has been monitored by MHS students over the past 10 years and is a major tributary of the Taunton River Watershed. The purpose of the study completed this year was to determine how land use affects the nitrate and phosphate levels of Fall Brook. The Wareham Street Site is located next to a horse farm and downstream from several cranberry bogs in a heavily wooded area. The Wood Street Site is located in conservation land, downstream from the Wareham Street Site and has a …

The Comparison Of Leonard Washburn Brook And Poquoy Brook May 2006

The Comparison Of Leonard Washburn Brook And Poquoy Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Students compared the water quality of two brooks in Lakeville, MA. Leonard-Washburn is located west of Cross Street and was accessed through private property. The brook is spring fed and drains a woodland and a forested wetland. There are few land uses that impact this brook. Land surrounding the brook has been donated to the Wetlands Trust to prevent future development. The Poquoy Brook site is located on the upstream side of the Taunton Street culvert. Land uses include cranberry farming, low density residential, an active railroad track (ConRail) and Poquoy Brook Golf Course.

Dissolved Oxygen concentrations followed a diurnal pattern …

Characterization Survey Of Rattlesnake Brook May 2006

Characterization Survey Of Rattlesnake Brook

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Students investigated whether the construction of the Stop and Shop DePot in Assonet, MA had any adverse influence on the water quality of Rattlesnake Brook. The brook drains a wetlands east of the Assonet River, passes beneath South Main Street in Assonet then passes to the west of the S & S Depot. It then enters a marsh along with Terrry Brook before reaching its confluence with the Assonet River. Water quality was found to be within normal ranges at all three sites. Nutrients were often below detection limit. Calculation for load indicated a sudden drop in nitrates between the …

Abbott Run River Study May 2006

Abbott Run River Study

Watershed Access Lab Projects

During the past year, we have studied, in detail, Abbot Run. The purpose of our study was to ensure that the river met the Massachusetts water quality standards of a Class A river. The Abbott Run is a Class A river because it is the source of the drinking water for Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Abbott Run is a part of the Blackstone River Watershed, which is located in Massachusetts and continues into parts of Rhode Island. The river runs through North Attleboro and passes through Chemawa Golf Course, an 18-hole course.

The river was studied at two different sites about …

Knee Valgus In Self-Initiated Vertical Jump Landings: Developmental And Gender Comparisons, Pamela J. Russell, Erik E. Swartz, Laura C. Decoster, Ron V. Croce Jan 2006

Knee Valgus In Self-Initiated Vertical Jump Landings: Developmental And Gender Comparisons, Pamela J. Russell, Erik E. Swartz, Laura C. Decoster, Ron V. Croce

Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies Faculty Publications

The study examined gender and developmental differences in knee valgus angle and external knee valgus moment at the time of maximal vertical ground reaction force (MGRFz) in self-initiated vertical jump (VJ) landings. Fifty-six subjects grouped by age (pre-pubescent (8-11 yrs); post-pubescent (19-29 yrs)) and gender jumped for a ball set at 50% of their maximum VJ height then landed on two feet with only their dominant foot on the force plate. Statistical analyses of motion analysis (3-D) and GRF data showed that children had greater valgus angles (p = .003) and moments (p = .026) at MGRFz compared to adults. …
