Asian soybean rust, which arrived in the United States in 2004, has the potential to be the single most important impediment to economical organic soybean production in the United States. The economic impact of ASR in organic systems could range from $30 to $120 million in yield loss, upon its arrival in organic soybean areas. The fungus (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) survives year-round in warm areas, such as the southern United States. During a growing season, the pathogen is disseminated by northward seasonal wind.

Stark Brothers Nursery, Louisiana, Missouri, has released for sale a new walnut cultivar named Stark Northern Prize™. This tree is a cold-resistant Persian (Carpathian) walnut, Juglans regia. It was selected from a population of open-pollinated seedlings planted at the Iowa State University Horticulture Station, Ames, Iowa, in 1971 and was evaluated as ISU71-E18. In 2002, the U.S. plant patent was received for the walnut tree named Domoto. Regular mower maintenance is essential to achieve the best possible quality of cut. Dull mowers tear leaf tissue, severely wounding the plant and resulting in formation of frayed and necrotic leaf tips. Severe wounding may limit growth and development of grasses and increase susceptibility to stresses such as drought, pathogens, insects, and traffic. The objective of this study was to quantify mower sharpness and mowing injury over time. This information will be used to develop general mower maintenance guidelines and to determine how frequently reel-type mowers should be sharpened to achieve the best possible quality of cut.

The objective of the garden was to grow diverse plants in order to display and compare a wide variety of vegetables and flowers. The 2005 garden included a continental garden, summer squash, marigolds, basil, and black-eyed Susans. The continental garden included domesticated plants from four continental areas: Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Weed control in sweet corn is very important since the competition they create reduces yield and quality factors such as ear size and tip fill. Weeds filling row centers can also interfere with pest control sprays and make harvesting more difficult. Herbicides are an important tool in weed management programs and in April 2005, the EPA registered the use of Callisto in sweet corn. To help growers utilize this new product effectively, we looked at different combinations and application timings of Callisto with the herbicides Dual II Magnum and AAtrex 4L for crop safety and weed control effectiveness.

The profitability of strawberry production is dependent in large part on the condition, or quality, of the soil being used. Soils with poor physical structure, chemical properties, or biological activity require more cultivation, fertilizers, and other inputs to maintain economic viability. In general, cultivation of the soil for crop production degrades the soil. At some point, the cost of inputs will outweigh the value of the strawberry crop being produced. It is therefore essential for growers to monitor the productive capacity of their soil.

Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is a stoloniferous, cool-season perennial grass used predominately on golf course putting greens in temperate regions of the United States. Its use on golf course fairways is increasing steadily as new cultivars possess improved shoot density and disease tolerance. However, due to the aggressive growth habit of bentgrass, it often spreads into surrounding areas of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) forming unsightly, scattered patches.

Flax (Linum usitatissimum [Linaceae] – linen family) is an ancient crop that had been grown in Iowa for many years, but it has been displaced by the emphasis on commodity corn and soybeans. Flax has many uses, including industrial oils from oilseed flax; food-quality flaxseed oil; and linen products, fiberboard and paper products from the straw. Flaxseed oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with lowered risk of heart disease and lowered blood cholesterol levels. Demand for genetically modified crops has seen an increase in popularity. Along with the benefits modified crops provide, there are some concerns of their ecological impact. The objectives of the Roundup Ready® bluegrass study were to establish conventional cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass, tissue culture–regenerated genotypes from conventional cultivars and transformed lines (glyphosate resistant) of Kentucky bluegrass in order to evaluate their vegetative and reproductive traits. A genetically transformed creeping bentgrass cultivar that is resistant to the nonselective herbicide glyphosate has been developed. To date, glyphosate-resistant creeping bentgrass is not commercially available, but its use could ease weed control and improve overall quality of the putting surface. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) creates a dense, high-quality playing surface on golf courses, but often encroaches adjacent areas of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Callisto, a herbicide produced and marketed by Syngenta containing the active ingredient mesotrione, provides preemergence and postemergence control of broadleaf and annual grassy weeds. Preliminary field trials show that mesotrione kills creeping bentgrass, but more information is needed regarding the application protocol. Research was conducted to determine: 1) what rates of mesotrione are best for removing creeping bentgrass from Kentucky bluegrass, and 2) what mesotrione rates are safe for Kentucky bluegrass.
