Building Effective Ontology For Semantic Web: A Discussion Based On Practical Examples, Tianmu Zhang
Building Effective Ontology For Semantic Web: A Discussion Based On Practical Examples, Tianmu Zhang
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
The study aims to investigate semantic web and create useful ontology as a teaching and educational tool for others interested in learning more about Semantic web. This paper discussed several emerging issues about the semantic web and ontology building. This paper combines ontology implementation examples with research topics to identify current issues and potential solution in both application and theoretical level. It concludes that although semantic web and ontology technology are not mature enough currently, there is a clear tendency for them to be integrated into various applications to exert synergies.

Surveys of scientists for the NSF DataONE project and the USGS Southeast Information Node of the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), as well as follow-up interviews, show that environmental scientists are interested in sharing their data with certain conditions, such as citations or acknowledgment. Government scientists are more likely to be satisfied with the processes for data management than are academic scientists, but less likely to be satisfied with the process of describing data or tools for documentation. Both groups value trusted and complete sources. There are many ways that scientists can be assisted with data management throughout the data …

The Changing Communication Patterns Of Engineers, Kenneth Levine, Suzie Allard, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
In the 21st-century workplace, communicating information effectively is essential for organizational success. It is only with a proper understanding of the power of communication-and the multiple channels through which information is sent-that problem solving, creativity and innovation are fostered. As workers face increasing demands on their time, they are finding new and unique ways to use technology in order to communicate. Further, for the communication to be effective, workers must understand cultural differences and overcome cultural barriers, as for many in the high-tech industry, the workplace is now global. In the global environment, meetings are common, but due to distance, …

Background: Scientific research in the 21st century is more data intensive and collaborative than in the past. It is important to study the data practices of researchers – data accessibility, discovery, re-use, preservation and, particularly, data sharing. Data sharing is a valuable part of the scientific method allowing for verification of results and extending research from prior results. Methodology/Principal Findings: A total of 1329 scientists participated in this survey exploring current data sharing practices and perceptions of the barriers and enablers of data sharing. Scientists do not make their data electronically available to others for various reasons, including insufficient time …

In Brief: Scholarly Reading And The Value Of Library Resources: A Status Report On A Research Project, Rachel Volentine, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Center of Information and Communication Studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, is currently working on a one-year project entitled "Scholarly Reading and the Value of Library Resources" with funding by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and collaboration with six universities in the United Kingdom. JISC partners with U.K colleges and universities to encourage the use of digital technologies in higher learning to support easy and widespread access to information, and its partnership with the University of Tennessee will help establish a better understanding of the reading patterns of academic faculty.

: A working group of ASERL librarians designed a survey to assess resource sharing issues and identify best practices. The results will assist ASERL in identifying programming and project areas to support resource sharing. The survey will also produce ILL and resource sharing benchmarks useful for future planning and assessment. The survey inquires into fundamental resource sharing outputs, networks, and technologies. To measure current best practices, the survey also incorporates Rethinking Resource Sharing "STARS" A Checklist Interlibrary Loan Assessment, devised by ALA/RUSA/STARS.

Young Adult Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender And Questioning (Lgbtq) Non-Fiction Collections And Countywide Anti-Discrimination Policies, Kynita Stringer-Stanback
UT Libraries Faculty: Peer-Reviewed Publications
This study examines news articles and anti-discrimination ordinances that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) communities in the four most populous counties from five Southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The possible impact of such policies on the collection of non-fiction young adult materials in the public libraries in those counties is explored. The holdings of each county are compared to a list of 23 titles compiled from literary award winners selected from the time period 1996-2003 using the Lambda Literary Foundation Awards, the American Library Association Stonewall Awards, and an American Library Association …

The Usability and Assessment Working Group (U&A WG) conducted an internal evaluation of the DataONE public website (www.dataone.org). The purpose of the evaluation was to assess the usability of the website regarding the interface design, information content, and information organization. The website was reviewed by 1) a group of 4 experts in Elsevier User Centered Design Group, 2) one U&A WG member from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and 3) three U&A WG members from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Each person did an independent analysis and the results were then synthesized into a single report.

Folksonomy-Based User-Centric Information Organization Systems, Devendra Potnis
Folksonomy-Based User-Centric Information Organization Systems, Devendra Potnis
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
After the rise of Web 2.0 technologies, Folksonomy emerged as one of the most popular user-centric information organization techniques in the newly reforming digital world. ln the context of the rising popularity of folksonomies, this paper conceptually investigates -- how can folksonomies be integrated with other ways of organizing information for building systems that could serve information users better in the future? A set of experimentation ideas of integrating folksonomy with controlled vocabularies, bibliometric maps, thesaurus-based systems, ontologies, and semantic web could inform and catalyze the design and development of folksonomy-based user-centric information organization systems in the future.
