Occurrence Of The Invasion Associated Marker (Iam) In Campylobacter Jejuni Isolated From Cattle, Yasser M. Sanad, Issmat I. Kassem, Zhe Liu, Jun Lin, Jeffrey T. Lejeune, Gireesh Rajashekara
Animal Science Publications and Other Works
Background
The invasion associated marker (iam) has been detected in the majority of invasive Campylobacter jejuni retrieved from humans. Furthermore, the detection of iam in C. jejuni isolated from two important hosts, humans and chickens, suggested a role for this marker in C. jejuni's colonization of multiple hosts. However, no data exist regarding the occurrence of this marker in C. jejuni isolated from non-poultry food-animals such as cattle, an increasingly important source for human infections. Since little is known about the genetics associated with C. jejuni's capability for colonizing physiologically disparate hosts, we investigated the occurrence …

Effects Of Dairy Consumption On Sirt1 And Mitochondrial Biogenesis In Adipocytes And Muscle Cells, Antje Bruckbauer, Michael B. Zemel
Nutrition Publications and Other Works
Background
Recent data from this laboratory suggest that components of dairy foods may serve as activators of SIRT1 (Silent Information Regulator Transcript 1), and thereby participate in regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. In this study, an ex-vivo/in-vitro approach was used to examine the integrated effects of dairy diets on SIRT1 activation in two key target tissues (adipose and muscle tissue).
Methods
Serum from overweight and obese subjects fed low or high dairy diets for 28 days was added to culture medium (similar to conditioned media) to treat cultured adipocytes and muscle cells for 48 hours.
Results
Treatment with high …

Building Effective Ontology For Semantic Web: A Discussion Based On Practical Examples, Tianmu Zhang
Building Effective Ontology For Semantic Web: A Discussion Based On Practical Examples, Tianmu Zhang
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
The study aims to investigate semantic web and create useful ontology as a teaching and educational tool for others interested in learning more about Semantic web. This paper discussed several emerging issues about the semantic web and ontology building. This paper combines ontology implementation examples with research topics to identify current issues and potential solution in both application and theoretical level. It concludes that although semantic web and ontology technology are not mature enough currently, there is a clear tendency for them to be integrated into various applications to exert synergies.

Underappreciated Consequences Of Phenotypic Plasticity For Ecological Speciation, Benjamin M. Ftizpatrick
Underappreciated Consequences Of Phenotypic Plasticity For Ecological Speciation, Benjamin M. Ftizpatrick
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Phenotypic plasticity was once seen primarily as a constraint on adaptive evolution or merely a nuisance by geneticists. However, some biologists promote plasticity as a source of novelty and a factor in evolution on par with mutation, drift, gene flow, and selection. These claims are controversial and largely untested, but progress has been made on more modest questions about effects of plasticity on local adaptation (the first component of ecological speciation). Adaptive phenotypic plasticity can be a buffer against divergent selection. It can also facilitate colonization of new niches and rapid divergent evolution. The influence of non-adaptive plasticity has been …

Rapid In Vivo Analysis Of Synthetic Promoters For Plant Pathogen Phytosensing, Wusheng Liu, Mira Mazarei, Mary R. Rudis, Neal C. Stewart
Rapid In Vivo Analysis Of Synthetic Promoters For Plant Pathogen Phytosensing, Wusheng Liu, Mira Mazarei, Mary R. Rudis, Neal C. Stewart
Plant Sciences Publications and Other Works
Background
We aimed to engineer transgenic plants for the purpose of early detection of plant pathogen infection, which was accomplished by employing synthetic pathogen inducible promoters fused to reporter genes for altered phenotypes in response to the pathogen infection. Toward this end, a number of synthetic promoters consisting of inducible regulatory elements fused to a red fluorescent protein (RFP) reporter were constructed for use in phytosensing.
Results
For rapid analysis, an Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression assay was evaluated, then utilized to assess the inducibility of each synthetic promoter construct in vivo. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) leaves were …

Research On The Historical And Philosophical Foundations Of Andragogy: Expanding Horizons And Deepening The Search In 2011, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
This paper on the History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited [with a few exceptions] to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, present aspects of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts in which they appeared in published form. This will not be an exact history of the events and philosophy as they appear in chronological order. But, this will be presented in the general sequence of the years that …
