Becoming A Competent 21st Century Legal Ethics Professor: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Technology (But Were Afraid To Ask), Catherine Lanctot
Catherine J. Lanctot
This Article provides a roadmap for rebooting the legal ethics curriculum. It describes how to revise a traditional legal ethics class to respond to twenty-first century law practice, and provides a detailed overview of the landscape of technological issues currently affecting the practice of law, including many cautionary tales of lawyers who ignored their ethical responsibilities.
We have finally hit the tipping point with respect to the use of technology within the legal profession, as bar regulators have begun to warn attorneys that they may no longer plead ignorance of technological advances if such ignorance harms the interests of their …

Scholars have frequently suggested that the Fourth Amendment ought to be applied with varying degrees of rigor depending on the seriousness of the crime investigated. Courts have largely rejected such an offense-specific approach to constitutional protections, but have demonstrated deference to the Executive Branch in matters of national security in other contexts. The particularly heightened concern raised by the threat of terrorism suggests that, at least in the context of these most serious of cases, courts ought to engage in some form of balance that recognizes the uniquely strong government interest. Such an approach, however, has to recognize that the …

Twitter Influence And Cumulative Perceptions Of Extremist Support: A Case Study Of Geert Wilders, Gabrielle Blanquart, David M. Cook
Twitter Influence And Cumulative Perceptions Of Extremist Support: A Case Study Of Geert Wilders, Gabrielle Blanquart, David M. Cook
Dr. David M Cook
The advent of Social media has changed the manner in which perceptions about power and information can be influenced. Twitter is used as a fast‐paced vehicle to deliver short, succinct pieces of information, creating the perception of acceptance, popularity and authority. In the case of extremist groups, Twitter is one of several avenues to create the perception of endorsement of values that would otherwise gain less prominence through mainstream media. This study examines the use of Twitter in augmenting the status and reputation of anti‐Islam and anti‐immigration policy through the controlled release of social media information bursts. The paper demonstrates …

Private information is no longer stored only in homes or other areas traditionally protected from warrantless intrusion. The private lives of many citizens are contained in a digital device no larger than the palm of their hand—and carried in public places. But that does not make the data within a cell phone any less private, just as the dialing of a phone number does not voluntarily waive an individual’s right to keep their call log or location private. Remember that we are not talking about individuals suspected of committing violent crimes. The Government is recording the calls and locations of …

Navigating The Universe Of Etds: Streamlining For An Efficient And Sustainable Workflow At The University Of North Florida Library, Courtenay Mcleland, Marielle Veve
Marielle Veve
Since its inception in 2011, the Digital Projects and Preservation Department at the University of North Florida (UNF) Library has been digitizing print theses and dissertations while also offering a mediated option for online submissions through its institutional repository (IR). It was not until Fall 2012 that the submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) became a requirement for the university graduates. As time passed and the number of ETDs deposited grew, so did the need to streamline processes to avoid duplication of efforts, improve efficiencies, and save time. After much experimentation and effort, the presenters were able to successfully …
Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Celia Emmelhainz
This article seeks to outline the use of controlled vocabulary standards for qualitative datasets in cultural anthropology, which are increasingly held in researcher-accessible government repositories and online digital libraries. As a humanistic science that can address almost any aspect of life with meaning to humans, cultural anthropology has proven difficult for librarians and archivists to effectively organize. Yet as anthropology moves onto the web, the challenge of organizing and curating information within the field only grows. In considering the subject classification of digital information in anthropology, I ask how we might best use controlled vocabularies for indexing digital anthropological data. …

A Novel Weighted-Graph-Based Grouping Algorithm For Metadata Prefetching, Peng Gu, Jun Wang, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang, Pengju Shang
Yifeng Zhu
Although data prefetching algorithms have been extensively studied for years, there is no counterpart research done for metadata access performance. Existing data prefetching algorithms, either lack of emphasis on group prefetching, or bearing a high level of computational complexity, do not work well with metadata prefetching cases. Therefore, an efficient, accurate, and distributed metadata-oriented prefetching scheme is critical to leverage the overall performance in large distributed storage systems. In this paper, we present a novel weighted-graph-based prefetching technique, built on both direct and indirect successor relationship, to reap performance benefit from prefetching specifically for clustered metadata servers, an arrangement envisioned …

Rankings, Reductionism, And Responsibility , Frank Pasquale

After discussing how search engines operate in Part I below, and setting forth a normative basis for regulation of their results in Part II, this piece proposes (in Part III) some minor, non-intrusive legal remedies for those who claim that they are harmed by search engine results. Such harms include unwanted high-ranking results relating to them, or exclusion from a page they claim it is their “due” to appear on. In the first case (deemed “inclusion harm”), I propose a right not to suppress the results, but merely to add an asterisk to the hyperlink directing web users to them, …

The Digital Commons platform for institutional repositories provides a three-tiered taxonomy of academic disciplines for each item submitted to the repository. Since faculty and departmental administrators across campuses are encouraged to submit materials to the institutional repository themselves, they must also assign disciplines or subject categories for their own work. The expandable drop-down menu of about 1,000 categories is easy to use, and facilitates the growth of the institutional repository and access to the materials through the Internet.

Online Image Tagging System, Malak Alshawabkeh, David Kaeli
David Kaeli
Online Image Tagging is a developed software that allows users of the CenSSIS Image Database to associate detailed metadata with specific regions of images, a process we refer to as "Image Tagging." The process of image tagging involves using the Image Tagging interface to draw an outline around a region of interest in an image. Once the area has been selected, a label can be placed on it and additional metadata can be associated with it. The metadata can contain custom XML tags in addition to the standard XML elements that the general tag data is stored in. Eventually, users …

This is a static version of the visuals of a presentation I gave to the ALA Subject on linked open subject authority data. I described how linked data from the Library of Congress (http://id.loc.gov/) can be used to improve subject cataloging and browsing. I describe how the data is structured (including a brief overview of RDF and SKOS), and explain how I have used it to improve The Online Books Page (http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/) and the Penn Libraries' catalog. I also show how I augmented and enhanced the authority data from LC, and discuss how widespread use of linked bibliographic and authority …

The Metadata Challenge: Promoting Discovery, Access, And Usability For Online Books, John Mark Ockerbloom

With millions of books, serials, and other documents now digitized, rich troves of information and culture can now be made available to anyone in the world with an Internet connection. But these riches are worthless if they cannot be found, accessed, and effectively used by the readers who need them. The key to unlock these treasures is metadata. Networked computing enables techniques for making metadata more effective than ever; yet in practice, online collections all too often either do not have or do not take full advantage of the best metadata they could use.
There is much ongoing work harnessing …

Mountain West Digital Library Dublin Core Application Profile, Cheryl D. Walters
Cheryl D. Walters
This Dublin Core application profile supersedes the Metadata Guidelines for the Mountain West Digital Library (2006). It is intended to guide the creation of new metadata (i.e., created after June 1, 2010) by members and contributing partners of the MWDL. The Mountain West Digital Library (MWDL) provides a portal (http://mwdl.org) to digital resources in universities, colleges, public libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, government agencies, and other entities in Utah, Nevada, and other parts of the U.S. West. Cheryl Walters served as Chair of the Metadata Task Force that wrote this profile.

This presentation offers a simple illustration of the ways html code, metadata tagging and other strategies enable content discovery. It contains examples that can be understood by anyone familiar with a bibliographic record. Librarians who grasp these concepts will be well-prepared to convince faculty that the library is both a safe and sustainable archive for their work, and that placing content with the library is more likely to lead to its discovery than any personal web space.

Anatomy Of An Institutional Repository: Dissecting The Metadata Process, Lisa A. Palmer

In 2006 the Lamar Soutter Library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School licensed ProQuest’s Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) software and launched eScholarship@UMMS. The goals were to provide a showcase for the medical school’s research, teaching, and scholarship; promote open access to research; and make available an easy way for faculty and researchers to promote and distribute their work. To date the Library has established five distinct collections. Each collection varies in scope and in the way the Library acquires the content. This variation poses many challenges for metadata creation and maintenance. Each collection entails the establishment of record …
