The Influence Of Racial Identity On White Students' Perceptions Of African American Faculty, Kathleen Neville, Tara L. Parker Dec 2018

The Influence Of Racial Identity On White Students' Perceptions Of African American Faculty, Kathleen Neville, Tara L. Parker

Kathleen Neville

Due to the under representation of African American teachers and college faculty, students have limited to no interaction with Blacks as authority figures in the classroom. When White students in particular face African American faculty in class, they often exhibit negative attitudes and inappropriate behavior. Using racial identity development and critical race theory, we seek to understand how White college students perceive African American professors and from where those perceptions stem. In considering the social and educational context in which students live, our study explores the ways White students perceive Black professors and how students' racial identity development influences their …

The Influence Of "Accessibility Cues" On Students' Engagement And Interactions With African American Faculty, Kathleen Neville, Tara L. Parker Dec 2018

The Influence Of "Accessibility Cues" On Students' Engagement And Interactions With African American Faculty, Kathleen Neville, Tara L. Parker

Kathleen Neville

This phenomenological study examined the perceptions and experiences of 22 traditional aged
students when their African American faculty used “accessibility cues” in the classroom. Examples
of “cues” include; encouraging students to actively participate in class, evaluate an assignment, or
share personal experiences related to the class topic. Students perceive this form of active pedagogy
as an indicator that the faculty member is willing to engage outside the formal classroom
environment (Wilson, Woods, & Gaff, 1974). Results of in depth interviews with the students in this
study, reveals that when faculty use these “cues” in the classroom, students felt respected, valued, …

Should Robots Prosecute And Defend?, Stephen E. Henderson

Stephen E Henderson

Even when we achieve the ‘holy grail’ of artificial intelligence—machine intelligence that is at least as smart as a human being in every area of thought—there may be classes of decisions for which it is intrinsically important to retain a human in the loop. On the common account of American criminal adjudication, the role of prosecutor seems to include such decisions given the largely unreviewable declination authority, whereas the role of defense counsel would seem fully susceptible of automation. And even for the prosecutor, the benefits of automation might outweigh the intrinsic decision-making loss, given that the ultimate decision—by judge …

Rights Disappear When Us Policy Engages Children As Weapons Of Deterrence, Craig B. Mousin Dec 2018

Rights Disappear When Us Policy Engages Children As Weapons Of Deterrence, Craig B. Mousin

Craig B. Mousin

Although the United States provided significant guidance in drafting the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) it has never ratified the convention. The failure to ratify has taken on critical significance in light of new federal policies that have detained over 15,000 children in 2018, separated families, accelerated removal of asylum seekers, and emphasized deterring families from seeking asylum.

This article raises ethical and health implications of these refugee policies in light of the United States’ failure to ratify the CRC. It first examines the development of the CRC and international refugee law. It next lists some of …

Common Law Tort Of Negligence As A Tool For Deconstructing Positive Obligations Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Vladislava Stoyanova Dec 2018

Common Law Tort Of Negligence As A Tool For Deconstructing Positive Obligations Under The European Convention On Human Rights, Vladislava Stoyanova

Vladislava Stoyanova

This article examines how the common law tort of negligence as developed in the United Kingdom can provide a helpful guidance for deconstructing and elucidating some of the disparate analytical issues that are subsumed under the umbrella of positive obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Both frameworks, the common law and ECHR, aim to delimit the circumstances where responsibility for omissions can be found and have similar conceptual basis of protection in that they protect fundamental interests. However, in the context of the common law certain analytical elements have been more thoroughly considered and more clearly articulated. …

Interstate Licensure Portability: Logistics And Barriers For Professional Counselors, Anna Elliott, Lynn Bohecker, Gregory Elliott, Bethany J. Townsend, Veronica Johnson, Anna Lopez, Elizabeth D. Horn, Ken Roach

Lynn Bohecker

Counseling licensure portability is in a state of crisis. The collaborative 20/20 initiative made headway in establishing the profession’s objectives toward consistent licensure standards across states; however, inconsistencies and significant barriers persist. The authors conducted a qualitative content analysis to understand the logistics associated with interstate portability of counseling licenses in the Rocky Mountain Region of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming). Results describe participants’ experiences in fulfilling licensure requirements and the barriers encountered because of discrepancies in practice standards. Recommendations for counselors, supervisors, and state licensing boards are described.

Pedagogical Perspectives On Counselor Education: An Autoethnographic Experience Of Doctoral Student Development, Anna Elliott, Beronica Salazar, Brittany L. Dennis, Lynn Bohecker, Tiffany Nielson, Kirsten Lamantia, David M. Kleist Dec 2018

Pedagogical Perspectives On Counselor Education: An Autoethnographic Experience Of Doctoral Student Development, Anna Elliott, Beronica Salazar, Brittany L. Dennis, Lynn Bohecker, Tiffany Nielson, Kirsten Lamantia, David M. Kleist

Lynn Bohecker

There is minimal literature related to understanding what training factors
contribute to the development of qualified counselor educators. Specifically,
we wondered if counselor education doctoral students are effectively prepared
for their roles as instructors. We chose an autoethnographic phenomenology
method as a means for exploring the experiences of doctoral students’
pedagogical development in a doctoral instructional theory course. We sought
to understand the essence of our experience through written reflection,
photography, and group reflective processes. Analysis revealed the value we
all obtained through the instructional theory course, experiential learning,
and self-reflection, which contributed to increased self-efficacy as emerging
counselor educators. …

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell Dec 2018

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to examine the character Severus Snape and his heroism. I will go about this task by analyzing Snape’s life and legacy, and judging him through several lenses of heroism science. Most importantly, the goal of this discussion is to determine whether or not Snape is truly a “hero.” Whether you love him or hate him, Severus Snape is one of the most recognizable literary characters of the twenty-first century, and his morality and merits are still talked about by fans of the Harry Potter franchise. I will use traditional archetypes and theories of heroism science to determine …

Ancient Egyptian Beautification Practices Paper.Docx, Taylor Maupin Dec 2018

Ancient Egyptian Beautification Practices Paper.Docx, Taylor Maupin

Taylor Maupin

Ancient Egypt is renowned for its extensive use of beauty products, but the image of Ancient Egypt modern media presents to consumers today barely expresses the importance of these products and practices. This paper details the production, application process, and function of these products and describes their importance in relation to modern society. The four functions of cosmetics (Religion, Aesthetics, Status, Health) are used to examine why beauty rituals are important to the Egyptian society, and modern beauty trends are contrasted with those of Ancient Egypt. Culture and industry movements and their catalysts explain the connection between past and present …

The Embodiment Of War: Growth, Development, And Armed Conflict, Patrick F. Clarkin Dec 2018

The Embodiment Of War: Growth, Development, And Armed Conflict, Patrick F. Clarkin

Patrick F. Clarkin

Armed conflict regularly presents extremely adverse circumstances not only for combatants, but also for civilians. In fact, estimates from various wars over the past 70 years suggest that noncombatants comprise the majority of casualties. For survivors, war's effects are often embodied, leaving long-term effects on health and biology. Some of these effects, such as injuries and psychological trauma, are well known. Yet other effects may be subtle and may be elucidated by a developmental biological perspective. In early life, when growth rates are highest, conditions of war may have their greatest impact. Depending on local circumstances, a developing embryo, infant, …

Objective: This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in the home setting with families of preschoolers.
Methods: Using mixed-methods pilot data from an MI-based obesity prevention intervention delivered via home visits by health educators (HEs) with 44 families (n = 17 four home visit group; n = 14 two home visit group), we examined: 1) fidelity of MI adherence by HEs; 2) parents’ perceptions of the intervention; and 3) HEs insights pertaining to the intervention’s delivery.
Results: Multiple measures of MI fidelity were deemed to exceed defined proficiency levels. Ninety-three percent of families reported being …

Predicting Educators’ Use Of Twitter For Professional Learning And Development. Education And Information Technologies, Fei Gao Dec 2018

Predicting Educators’ Use Of Twitter For Professional Learning And Development. Education And Information Technologies, Fei Gao

Fei Gao

This paper proposes and tests a conceptual model of educators’ Twitter adoption for professional learning and development based on technology adoption model and related literature. To understand the factors that may affect educators’ adoption of Twitter for professional learning and development, a questionnaire was designed and administered to 305 participants with the majority (88.5%) being 31 or older to measure the research constructs. A structural equation model was constructed to examine the relationships among factors that affect this adoption process. The results suggest that the research framework integrating multiple perspectives provides a comprehensive understanding of educators’ intention and actual use …

Background: In Canada, a majority of children and adults are insufficiently active for health gains, and about one in seven children and over 20% of adults are overweight or obese. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for many chronic diseases in both adults and children and can result in lower quality and quantity of life. Children whose parents are overweight or obese are more likely to become overweight themselves. Thus, parent/child interventions are important for reducing obesity and promoting long-term healthy weights among members of the family unit. Programs using Co-Active coaching have resulted in positive behaviour changes among adults …

Background: Early childhood educators greatly influence young children’s physical activity and screen-viewing behaviours in childcare. However, educators have requested additional training in physical activity programming, and one logical place to provide this education is during their pre-service schooling. This study explored the physical activity and screen-viewing-related knowledge, training, and self-efficacy of early childhood education (ECE) candidates across Canada, to determine their confidence and ability to facilitate physical activity opportunities and limit screen-viewing among young children in childcare.
Methods: Key program personnel at 61 (of 110) Canadian colleges/universities offering an ECE program agreed to participate in this cross-sectional study. An online …

Jennifer D. Irwin

Background: Recently, our team implemented a 13-week group-based intervention for parents of children with obesity (“C.H.A.M.P. Families”). The primary objective of this study was to explore, qualitatively, parents’ perspectives of their experiences in and influence of C.H.A.M.P. Families, as well as their recommendations for future paediatric obesity treatment interventions. Methods: Twelve parents (seven mothers, five fathers/step-fathers) representing seven children (four girls, three boys) with obesity participated in one of two focus groups following the intervention. Focus groups were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Findings showed that parents perceived their participation in …

The Resettlement Of Vietnamese Refugee Religious, Priests, And Seminarians In The United States, 1975–1977, Tuan Hoang Dec 2018

The Resettlement Of Vietnamese Refugee Religious, Priests, And Seminarians In The United States, 1975–1977, Tuan Hoang

Tuan Hoang

The fall of Saigon (1975) was a significant factor in the large numbers of Vietnamese American vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This event led some 125,000 refugees from South Vietnam to the U.S., including hundreds of priests, seminarians, and men and women religious. Their sudden presence prompted a host of responses from American Catholics under the leadership and coordination of the United States Catholic Conference. This leadership led to relatively quick resettlement of religious, priests, and seminarians. Combining exilic experience and identity with the Catholic faith, these refugees established communities in the U.S. and promoted vocations to the …
