Implementation Of Motivational Interviewing Training In An Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum: Identifying Adolescents At Risk For Substance Use, Denise Seigart, Max Veltman, Janet Willhaus, Colene Letterle

Janet Willhaus

Motivational interviewing (MI) has been increasingly utilized by health care practitioners for many years. MI has been practiced by social workers, nurses, physicians, psychologists, substance use counselors, and many other health care practitioners. Unfortunately, many health care practitioners do not have adequate training in motivational interviewing, and therefore feel ill equipped to utilize this approach when faced with clients who are in need of assessment and coaching. This paper discusses our experiences with a pilot project to implement MI training within an Adolescent SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) content addition to the undergraduate nursing curriculum. It includes discussion …

Rural Breast Cancer Patients And Survivors Perspectives Using Online Health Resources, Julie W. Merten, Kim Walsh-Childers, Lakeisha Rodman, Mary Ellen Young, Natalie Birchwood Nov 2018

Rural Breast Cancer Patients And Survivors Perspectives Using Online Health Resources, Julie W. Merten, Kim Walsh-Childers, Lakeisha Rodman, Mary Ellen Young, Natalie Birchwood

Julie Merten

Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, with over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. These patients, survivors and their loved ones use the Internet to find information about breast cancer, search for treatment options and connect with support groups. For women in medically underserved areas, especially rural areas, the Internet could be one of their only sources of information.
Objective: The study investigates rural breast cancer patients’ and survivors’ motivations to seek online information, ability to use the Internet as a health information source, barriers to finding the information they …

Pharmacist Recommendations For Adolescent Smoking Cessation: Results From A Delphi Study, Jessica L. King, Jamie L. Pomeranz, Mary Ellen Young, Julie W. Merten Nov 2018

Pharmacist Recommendations For Adolescent Smoking Cessation: Results From A Delphi Study, Jessica L. King, Jamie L. Pomeranz, Mary Ellen Young, Julie W. Merten

Julie Merten

While pharmacological and behavioral treatments exist for smoking cessation, there are currently no best practices for helping adolescents quit smoking. This study aimed to reach consensus regarding pharmacist recommendations for adolescent smoking cessation. Using a three-round Delphi technique, pharmacists across the USA with experience working with adolescent substance use provided quantitative and qualitative feedback on recommendations. Forty pharmacists completed Round 1, 37 completed Rounds 2 and 3. In Round 1, 36 (90%) responses included the nicotine patch, gum, or lozenge. Ten recommendations were identified in Round 1: nicotine patch, nicotine gum, nicotine lozenge, bupropion SR, varenicline, quitline, smoking cessation program, …

The Managed Body: Developing Girls & Menstrual Health In The Global South Oct 2018

The Managed Body: Developing Girls & Menstrual Health In The Global South

Chris Bobel

The Managed Body productively complicates ‘menstrual hygiene management’ (MHM)--a growing social movement to support menstruating girls in the Global South. Bobel offers an invested critique of the complicated discourses of MHM including its conceptual and practical links with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) development sector, human rights and ‘the girling of development.’ Drawing on analysis of in-depth interviews, participant observations and the digital materials of NGOs and social businesses, Bobel shows how MHM frames problems and solutions to capture attention and direct resources to this highly-tabooed topic. She asserts that MHM organizations often inadvertently rely upon weak evidence and …

Vitamin E Inhibits The Uvai Induction Of “Light” And “Dark” Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers, And Oxidatively Generated Dna Damage, In Keratinocytes, George J. Delinasios, Mahsa Karbaschi, Marcus Cooke, Antony R. Young Oct 2018

Vitamin E Inhibits The Uvai Induction Of “Light” And “Dark” Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers, And Oxidatively Generated Dna Damage, In Keratinocytes, George J. Delinasios, Mahsa Karbaschi, Marcus Cooke, Antony R. Young

Dr. Marcus S. Cooke PhD, FRCPath

Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced DNA damage has acute, and long-term adverse effects in the skin. This damage arises directly by absorption of UVR, and indirectly via photosensitization reactions. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of vitamin E on UVAI-induced DNA damage in keratinocytes in vitro. Incubation with vitamin E before UVAI exposure decreased the formation of oxidized purines (with a decrease in intracellular oxidizing species), and cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD). A possible sunscreening effect was excluded when similar results were obtained following vitamin E addition after UVAI exposure. Our data showed that DNA damage …

Endogenously Generated Dna Nucleobase Modifications Source, And Significance As Possible Biomarkers Of Malignant Transformation Risk, And Role In Anticancer Therapy, Ryszard Olinski, Daniel Gackowskia, Marcus Cooke Oct 2018

Endogenously Generated Dna Nucleobase Modifications Source, And Significance As Possible Biomarkers Of Malignant Transformation Risk, And Role In Anticancer Therapy, Ryszard Olinski, Daniel Gackowskia, Marcus Cooke

Dr. Marcus S. Cooke PhD, FRCPath

The DNA of all living cells undergoes continuous structural and chemical alteration, which may be derived from exogenous sources, or endogenous, metabolic pathways, such as cellular respiration, replication and DNA demethylation. It has been estimated that approximately 70,000 DNA lesions may be generated per day in a single cell, and this has been linked to a wide variety of diseases, including cancer. However, it is puzzling why potentially mutagenic DNA modifications, occurring at a similar level in different organs/tissue, may lead to organ/tissue specific cancers, or indeed non-malignant disease – what is the basis for this differential response? We suggest …

Background: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases ( NCDs ) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 ( GBD 2015 ), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015.

Methods: We estimated incidence and prevalence by age, sex, cause, …

Angela M. Hagaman

Background: Interpersonal communication is inherent in a majority of strategies seeking to engage prescriber and pharmacist health care professionals (HCPs) in the reduction and prevention of prescription drug abuse (PDA). However, research on HCP PDA communication behavioral engagement and factors that influence it is limited. Objectives This study quantitatively examined communication behaviors and trait-level communication metrics, and qualitatively described prescription drug abuse-related communication perceptions and behaviors among primary care prescribers and community pharmacists. Methods: Five focus groups (N = 35) were conducted within the Appalachian Research Network (AppNET), a rural primary care practice-based research network (PBRN) in South Central …

Retrospective Cohort Study Of The Efficacy Of Azithromycin Vs. Doxycycline As Part Of Combination Therapy In Non-Intensive Care Unit Veterans Hospitalized With Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Justin Spivey, Heather Sirek, Robert Wood, Kalpit Devani, Billy Brooks, Jonathan Moorman

Billy Brooks

The IDSA Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) Guideline recommends ceftriaxone in combination with doxycycline as an alternative to combination therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin for non-intensive care unit (ICU) patients hospitalized with CAP. This is an attractive alternative regimen due to recent concerns of increased cardiovascular risk associated with azithromycin. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of azithromycin and doxycycline each in combination with ceftriaxone for non-ICU Veterans hospitalized with CAP.

Medical education is undergoing significant transformation. Many medical schools are moving away from the concept of seat time to competency-based education and introducing flexibility in the curriculum that allows individualization. In response to rising student debt and the anticipated physician shortage, 35% of US medical schools are considering the development of accelerated pathways. The roadmap described in this paper is grounded in the experiences of the Consortium of Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs (CAMPP) members in the development, implementation, and evaluation of one type of accelerated pathway: the three-year MD program. Strategies include developing a mission that guides curricular development – …

Hdl Subfraction Changes With A Low-Fat, Plant-Based Complete Health Improvement Program (Chip), Lillian Kent, Ross Grant, Greg Watts, Darren Morton, Paul Rankin, Ewan Ward

Darren Morton

Background and Objectives: Low HDL concentrations are considered an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Interventions promoting a low-fat, plant-based eating pattern appear to reduce CVD risk while paradoxically also reducing HDL concentrations. Recent studies show HDL to comprise a range of subfractions, but the role these play in ameliorating the risk of CVD is unclear. The purpose of this study was to characterise changes in HDL subfractions in participants where HDL decreased following the CHIP intervention which promotes a low-fat, plant-based diet, with physical activity. Methods and Study Design: Individuals (n=22; mean age=55.4±16.3 years; 45.5% men, 54.5% women) participating …

Tobacco Smoke Exposure Is An Independent Predictor Of Vitamin D Deficiency In Us Children, Benjamin U. Nwosu, Philip Kum-Nji

Benjamin U. Nwosu

IMPORTANCE: The role of tobacco-smoke exposure on serum vitamin D concentration in US pediatric population is not known. We hypothesized that tobacco smoke exposure would increase the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in US children.

METHODS: Representative national data were accessed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 databank on 2,263 subjects of ages 3 to 17 years. Subjects were categorized into two groups based on their age: children, if <10 >years; and youth if 10 to 17 years. Descriptive and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the effect of serum cotinine-verified tobacco smoke exposure on …

Proteomic Profiling Of Serum Derived Exosomes From Prostate Cancer Patients, David Turay Oct 2018

Proteomic Profiling Of Serum Derived Exosomes From Prostate Cancer Patients, David Turay

David Turay, MD

Touted among the major achievements in the diagnosis and management of Prostate cancer (PCa) in the past few decades has been, the dramatic decline of men with advanced/metastatic PCa at diagnosis coupled with a significant improvement ( >90%) in the five and ten year survival rates of the disease. Non-palpable PCa (potentially clinically treatable disease) now accounts for 70-80% of all newly diagnosed cases of PCa. Preceding these changes by about a decade was the introduction of Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA) into clinical practice; first as biomarker for monitoring response to therapy and subsequently as a complementary screening tool. It …

The Brandeis Human Rights Advocacy Program: Advancing The Human Rights Of The Immigrant, Noncitizen And Refugee Community, Enid Trucios-Haynes

Enid F. Trucios-Haynes

The Human Rights Advocacy Program (HRAP or the Program) at the Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville, represents a unique collaboration of law faculty and students providing critical resources to the local immigrant, noncitizen and refugee community in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as local service providers to this community. The Program, established in Spring 2014, is distinctive because of its non-hierarchical internal model and the participatory action research and policy focus of its work. The Program is a distinguished from the typical law school clinical model in its focus on community engaged research, policy advocacy, and service, as well …

Exploring The Boundaries Of Command And Control Models Of Distributed Team Performance In Aviation And Aerospace Operations, Haydee M. Cuevas, Barrett S. Caldwell Oct 2018

Exploring The Boundaries Of Command And Control Models Of Distributed Team Performance In Aviation And Aerospace Operations, Haydee M. Cuevas, Barrett S. Caldwell

Haydee M. Cuevas

Traditional command and control (C2) models focus on a centralized command managing and directing one or more subordinate elements to perform required functions. However, in distributed C2 environments, a human commander has less ability to fully understand and control the behavior of "agents" (either human domain experts or autonomous automated systems) in real-time operations. In this paper, we explore the situational, information, and human performance issues that constrain the appropriateness of classical C2 system design, and highlight the need for distributed C2 information flow capabilities, in contemporary humanhuman and human-automation teams. We discuss these issues in the context of modern …

Investigating Uas Operator Characteristics Influencing Mission Success, Haydee M. Cuevas, Kristina M. Kendrick, Zane A. Zeigler, David J. Hamilton

Haydee M. Cuevas

The two objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate how specific operator characteristics (prior experience in manned and unmanned flight, teamwork, and gaming) influence mission success in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations; and 2) evaluate the potential utility of a performance assessment tool. Mission success was assessed using a modified version of the Situation Awareness Linked Indicators Adapted to Novel Tasks (SALIANT) methodology. Eighteen participants completed a UAS scenario (port security) as part of 9 two-person crews (pilot and sensor operator). Results showed that the SALIANT measure was able to discriminate differences in performance among the UAS crews. Results …
