Evaluating The Book “Triz: The Right Solutions At The Right Time”, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
The book has 10 chapters, all on different approaches and methods of solving problems. Each chapter tries to solve problems using different techniques of TRIZ. The book not only describes all 40 Inventive Principles, 76 Inventive Standards, 39 Contradiction Parameters and other Techniques of TRIZ, but also illustrates a series of 114 practical problems and their solutions. The book has been translated into many languages including Japanese. This is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and essential textbooks on TRIZ.
The Ideal Ifr Is No Ifr: Criticism To The Triz Concept Of Ideality, Umakant Mishra
The Ideal Ifr Is No Ifr: Criticism To The Triz Concept Of Ideality, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
The limitations of TRIZ concept of Ideality hail from its root philosophy of Idealism. As the “ideas” are there in human minds/brains they are subjective in nature. The concept of “Ideal” and IFR may vary from person to person as they are biased by individual judgments. Similarly the IFR may vary from system to system and at different phases of the development of a system.
However, the same limitations may be considered as the strengths of Idealism. As the IFRs can be different for different people and groups, the solution developer should not always take his own IFR for granted. …
Managing A Widespread E-Procurement Implementation In Public Healthcare, Tommaso Federici, Andrea Resca
Managing A Widespread E-Procurement Implementation In Public Healthcare, Tommaso Federici, Andrea Resca
Federici Tommaso
In large parts of Europe, the development of healthcare is subject to contrasting forces. On the one hand, there has been an explosion in spending and, at the same time, governments are faced with strict budget constraints. On the other hand, public healthcare is under pressure to be innovative, technologically advanced and to provide increasingly better quality of services. In this context, eprocurement can be seen as an instrument to offer a solution to the first issue of this dilemma. However, e-procurement initiatives in such domain have not been widely deployed, and most of them have not fully delivered the …
Start-Up Commercialisation Strategy And Innovative Dynamics, Joshua S. Gans
Start-Up Commercialisation Strategy And Innovative Dynamics, Joshua S. Gans
Joshua S Gans
This paper endogenises a start-up’s choice between competitive and cooperative commercialisation in a dynamic environment. It is demonstrated that, depending upon firms’ dynamic capabilities, there may or may not be gains to trade between incumbents and start-ups in a cumulative innovation environment; that is, start-ups may not be adequately compensated for losses in future innovative potential. Because of this, there is no clear relationship between observed inter-industry innovation and commercialisation choice unless dynamic capabilities of firms are taken into account. In addition, the analysis demonstrates subtle and novel insights into the relationship between dynamic capabilities and rates of innovation.
Introduction To The Concept Of Ideality In Triz, Umakant Mishra
Introduction To The Concept Of Ideality In Triz, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
Ideality is one of the most powerful concepts of TRIZ. According to ideality, the ideal state of the system is where all its functions are achieved without causing any problem. The system is better, faster, low cost, low error, low maintenance and so on. In other words, an ideal system consists of all positives and no negatives. An ideal product or system may not materially exist, or may not be possible to achieve, but the knowledge of the ideal system helps us to improve an existing system. Once we conceive the features of the ideal product (or system), we keep …
Inventions On Auto-Configurable Gui-A Triz Based Analysis, Umakant Mishra
Inventions On Auto-Configurable Gui-A Triz Based Analysis, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
A GUI is intended for the end user but designed by the developer. Even the experienced developer cannot realistically anticipate what options will be required by the users at a future point of time. Besides, even a well-designed GUI may not be felt convenient to all categories of users as the skill, expertise and requirement of the users vary from each other.
Although the user can best describe his requirement and therefore can best configure the GUI, it is not advisable for the user to spend time and effort to configure the GUI. The user interface needs to be customized …

Inventions On User Configurable Gui- A Triz Based Analysis, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
The graphic user interface is a revolutionary development over the prior art technique of the command line interface. Using GUI the user can do even complex operations through simple means like clicking buttons or dragging various graphic elements.
Ideally the GUI should contain all those buttons (or menu items or other GUI elements) and only those buttons (or menu items or other GUI elements) that the user needs. Besides the GUI elements should not obscure the display of data, should take no time for searching and should create no confusion in any level of user. Generally the GUI elements are …
Application Of Triz Principles In Software Concepts, Umakant Mishra
Application Of Triz Principles In Software Concepts, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
The Inventive Principles of TRIZ are not only applicable to mechanical or technical field; they are also applicable to Software solutions. Most of the 40 principles are easy to learn, but the question arises where to apply and how to apply. This article shows some simple examples of applying TRIZ principles.
Some people may ask, the solutions in this article are all known, what is the use of trying out TRIZ Principles on them. My answer is the art of problem solving is like learning a bicycle. If you are capable of riding the cycle on a known road, there …
The Concept Of Resources In Triz, Umakant Mishra
The Concept Of Resources In Triz, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
An ideal system should have all advantages and no harms. If the resources consumed are expensive than the output produced then the invented system becomes ridiculous. The objective should be to use least amount of resources, cheapest resources, easily available resources and resources available within the system.
Every system intends to achieve a main useful function. The use of resources should target to improve its main useful function. If certain parts of a system or certain resources lead to unwanted functions or harmful effects then that part of the system needs to be modified and those resources need to be …
An Introduction To Ariz, Umakant Mishra
An Introduction To Ariz, Umakant Mishra
Umakant Mishra
ARIZ- the Algorithm of Inventive Problem Solving, is a part of TRIZ. It is not as popularly used as other methods in TRIZ. The steps in ARIZ are difficult to follow and requires more intellectual effort. This method is used only to solve complex problem which are not solved by applying other methods of TRIZ. It is a tool for thinking in alternative directions to solve complex and non-standard problems.
From another point of view, ARIZ is a method of problem solving by redefining and restructuring the problem. Although problems can be solved by using other methods, it is better …

R&D Management In Iran, Opportunities And Threats, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Ali Ghazizadeh, Arash Golnam, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli
Nader Ale Ebrahim
Research and Development (R&D) management in Iran has faced many barriers and obstacles, in which R&D units are considered as the basic core of the product development and innovation. Due to structural shortcomings, a great number of organizations and industries have not yet been able to position themselves in the market. There are about 1141 R&D units throughout Iran, due to the geographical decentralization of these units this paper considers and analyzes the R&D case study in one of the provinces located in the north part of Iran, and the findings can be generalized to the other industrialized areas and …
The Impact Of Uncertainty Intellectual Property Rights On The Market For Ideas: Evidence From Patent Grant Delays, Joshua S. Gans, David H. Hsu, Scott Stern
The Impact Of Uncertainty Intellectual Property Rights On The Market For Ideas: Evidence From Patent Grant Delays, Joshua S. Gans, David H. Hsu, Scott Stern
Joshua S Gans
This paper considers the impact of the intellectual property (IP) system on the timing of cooperation/licensing by start-up technology entrepreneurs. If the market for technology licenses is efficient, the timing of licensing is independent of whether the patent has already been granted, and productive efficiency considerations will determine license timing (which likely will be as early as possible after invention). In contrast, the need for disclosure of unprotected knowledge on the part of the inventor, asymmetric information between the licensor and potential licensees, or search costs may retard efficient technology transfer. In these cases, reductions in uncertainty surrounding the scope …
The Geography Of Innovation Commercialization In The United States During The 1990s, Joshua L. Rosenbloom
The Geography Of Innovation Commercialization In The United States During The 1990s, Joshua L. Rosenbloom
Joshua L. Rosenbloom
This article analyzes the geographic distribution and interrelationship of three measures of innovation commercialization across the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the United States and estimates a model of the factors explaining variations in the location of innovation commercialization. Innovation commercialization tends to be highly concentrated geographically, suggesting the presence of substantial external economies in these functions. Beyond these scale effects, however, the author finds that university science and engineering capacity and local patenting activity both help to account for intercity differences in the level of innovation commercialization activity.
Pharmaceutical Lemons: Innovation And Regulation In The Drug Industry, Ariel Katz
Pharmaceutical Lemons: Innovation And Regulation In The Drug Industry, Ariel Katz
Ariel Katz
Before a new drug can be marketed the Food and Drug Administration must be satisfied that it is safe and effective. According to conventional wisdom, the cost and delay involved in this process diminish the incentives to invest in the development of new drugs. Accordingly, several reforms aimed at restoring such incentives have been implemented and others have been advocated. This paper challenges the central argument in the debate on the topic, namely that drug regulation and drug innovation are necessarily at odds with each other. Although intuitively appealing, the argument that drug regulation negatively affects the incentives to innovate …
Sleepers Exposed: New Innovations In Rail Design, Sakdirat Kaewunruen
Sleepers Exposed: New Innovations In Rail Design, Sakdirat Kaewunruen
Sakdirat Kaewunruen
No one would deny that our rail network makes life much easier, and trains are widely considered to be the world's safest mode of transport. Bearing this in mind, the idea of decreasing the weight of railway sleepers, or increasing the load they carry may make passengers and associates of the rail industry sceptical as regards their own safety or the integrity of their goods and assets.
New Practice Creation: An Institutional Approach To Innovation, Michael Lounsbury
New Practice Creation: An Institutional Approach To Innovation, Michael Lounsbury
michael lounsbury
Neoinstitutionalists have developed a rich array of theoretical and empirical insights about how new practices become established via legitimacy and diffusion, but have paid scant attention to their origins. This blind spot has been reinforced by recent work on institutional entrepreneurship which has too often celebrated the actions of a single or small number of actors, and deflected attention away from the emergent, multilevel nature of how new kinds of activities emerge and provide a foundation for the creation of a new practice. In this paper, we examine the case of the creation of active money management practice in the …
Development Through Positive Deviance And Its Implications For Economic Policy Making And Public Administration In Africa: The Case Of Kenyan Agricultural Development, 1930–2005, Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng
Development Through Positive Deviance And Its Implications For Economic Policy Making And Public Administration In Africa: The Case Of Kenyan Agricultural Development, 1930–2005, Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng
Cosmas Milton Obote Ochieng Ochieng
Positive internal innovation has long been a central element of African agricultural development, even if modern efforts to stimulate technical, institutional, and policy innovations in African agriculture have tended to look outwards. This paper examines the role of positive deviance in Kenyan agriculture over the last 75 years to cast doubt on the alleged authoritative sources of policy advice and mandates from the outside. Positive deviance and appreciative inquiry are suggested as organizing frameworks for identifying and amplifying the generation and uptake of internal African innovations.

Knowledge Search And Its Effects On The International Diffusion Of Knowledge, Wenyue Zhuang, Kwanghui Lim, Poh-Kam Wong

While research has shown that knowledge spillovers are geographically localized, the globalization of R&D is making international knowledge diffusion increasingly important. We propose that the propensity and speed with which technological knowledge diffuses across national borders is influenced by signals and cues during the search for new knowledge. In the context of the global information storage technology, we show that patented knowledge with high technological impact has higher propensity and speed of international diffusion than low impact knowledge. Moreover, an organization’s technological strength increases the likelihood and speed of international citation of its innovations, while internal appropriation efforts reduce diffusion.
Innovazione E Occupazione, Mario Pianta
Demand And Innovation In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi
Demand And Innovation In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi
Mario Pianta
After the decade-old debate between demand-pull and technology-push perspectives, demand seems to have fallen out of fashion. In this paper two models are proposed on the determinants of general innovative activities and on the market impact of product innovations. The models combine the supply and demand engines of innovation, and qualify the type of innovative efforts, distinguishing between those oriented towards cost reductions or towards technological competitiveness. The models are tested at the industry level for 22 manufacturing sectors and 17 services sectors in six European countries. The results show that efforts at technological competitiveness, product oriented strategies and the …
