Introducing New Engineering Students To Mechanical Concepts Through An “Energy Cube” Project, Micheal P. O'Flaherty, Shannon Chance, Fionnuala Farrell, Chris Montague
Shannon M. Chance
The objective of this paper is to describe a problem based learning module, called the “Energy Cube”, offered by Dublin Institute of Technology that is designed to teach mechanical, building services and manufacturing engineering concepts to first year engineering students. The Energy Cube project gives students hands-on experience in areas ranging from heat transfer, lighting and energy efficiency to industrial and product design. In the Energy Cube, students design and construct (using cardboard, clear plastic, and glue) a model of a building that admits as much daylight as possible while being energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. The students, working in …

Behind Education: How Can You "Be The Book" Behind Bars?, Dave Iasevoli
David Iasevoli
To teach reading to a transient population of incarcerated young men on Rikers Island, Dave lasevoli utilized the students' desire for knowledge and their talent for storytelling, humor, and acting to engage them. Students embodied the characters by reading aloud from the novel The Planet of Junior Brown, from which discussions about obesity, civil rights, and compassion emerged.
Improving Students’ Algebraic Thinking: The Case Of Talia, Kien H. Lim
Improving Students’ Algebraic Thinking: The Case Of Talia, Kien H. Lim
Kien H Lim
This paper presents the case of an 11th grader, Talia, who demonstrated improvement in her algebraic thinking after five one-hour sessions of solving problems involving inequalities and equations. She improved from association-based to coordination-based predictions, from impulsive to analytic anticipations, and from inequality-as-a-signal-for-a-procedure to inequality-as-a-comparison-of-functions conceptions. In the one-on-one teaching intervention, she progressed from the sub-context of manipulating symbols, to working with specific numbers, to reasoning with “general” numbers, and eventually to reasoning with symbols. Three features were identified to account for her improvement: (a) attention to meaning, (b) opportunity to repeat similar reasoning, and (c) opportunity to explore.

Faculty And Male Student Athletes In Higher Education: Racial Differences In The Environmental Predictors Of Academic Achievement, Keith Harrison
Faculty And Male Student Athletes In Higher Education: Racial Differences In The Environmental Predictors Of Academic Achievement, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
Studies have examined the impact of environmental variables on academic achievement among student athletes in the revenue-generating sports of men’s basketball and football. However, while evidence concerning the positive impact of male student athlete and faculty interaction is virtually unequivocal, we are not certain whether the benefits accruing from particular types of interaction vary across different racial/ethnic groups. This study explores the relationship between male Black and White student athletes and faculty as well as the impact of specific forms of student athlete– faculty interaction on academic achievement. Data are drawn from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program’s 2000 Freshman Survey …

A total of 14 theories and models are synthesized in this work, organized in five tables with the same structure: Theories of capital structure; capital budgeting and cost of equity; asset valuation, financial behavior and international finances. Each table contains theories organized alphabetically with an indication of its germinal or current character. The description of the theory is accompanied by current examples of empirical research that updates or contradicts …
Effects Of Item Positions On Their Difficulty And Discrimination : A Study In Pisa Science Data Across Test Language And Countries, Luc T. Le
Dr Luc Tu Le
This study was based on a four-cluster rotation design of 13 linked test booklets from PISA 2006 science data. It investigated effects of item positions on their difficulty and discrimination parameter estimates obtained from one and two parameter IRT Partial Credit models. The analyses were done separately for 57 test language groups from 53 countries with a total of about 340,000 students. The results revealed that for all of the test language groups the items tended to become more difficult when they were located later in the test. However, a high linear relationship between the item difficulty estimates by the …

Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang
Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang
Arthur Lang
I began my graduate studies in the spring, 2005 and finished in spring, 2007. Over those two and a half years, I have transformed my view of education. I have developed a vision and implemented changes in my own instruction. I learned what educators mean by change and have embraced its benefits. I realized that the school is not an isolated institution, but must seek outside support and enlist all members of the community. Most importantly, I learned that principals are not managers, but instructional leaders who lead by doing.

The 2+2 programs are designed to provide students enrolled at institutions without engineering programs the opportunity to take some of the fundamental engineering courses in addition to their general education …
Promoting Learner-Learner Interactions Through Ecological Assessments Of The Online Environment, Evelyn S. Johnson
Promoting Learner-Learner Interactions Through Ecological Assessments Of The Online Environment, Evelyn S. Johnson
Evelyn S. Johnson
As the number of learners engaging in online education increases, a growing body of literature is developing to recommend best practices for instructors. Typically, these recommendations are oriented to a particular aspect of interaction based on Moore’s (1989) extended framework, to include learner-instructor; learner-learner; learner-content; learner-interface interactions, with a recent emphasis on the importance of learner-learner interactions. However, online instructors and learners operate within a complex environment in which many aspects can have a direct impact on the instructor’s ability to facilitate learner-learner interactions. If online education providers and instructors hope to successfully adopt practices to promote learner-learner interaction, an …

Another Look At African Cultures Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen
Dorothy N. Bowen
I realized how difficult it is to describe what life is like for a child growing up in Africa when I was asked to make a presentation to two 6th grade classes. In the course of the presentation, I said, "Africa is not a country:' I had to smile to myself as I saw the shocked look on the face of a little girl sitting right in front of me. Her mouth dropped open and I knew that she thought I had made a very great error.

Plastic Presentation Of Control Data In Context-Awareness Environment, Anas Hariri, Johannes Petersen, Djilali Idoughi, Christophe Kolski
Professor Djilali IDOUGHI
The needs for re-adaptable presentations of supervision information are more necessary in the context-awareness environment whose environmental characteristics change frequently and the control data must be updated regularly into the Graphic User Interface (GUI), in order to provide efficiently to operators an accurate picture of the state of the system being supervised. The re-adaptation of GUI is necessary following each considerable changes in the context of use or in the measured data. We will suggest, in this paper, an approach that allows to generate GUI (in other word plastic GUI) capable to adapt dynamically at runtime to changeable context of …

Return On Effectiveness (Roe): A Working Model For Measuring Effectiveness Of Service Training, Raman Attri
Return On Effectiveness (Roe): A Working Model For Measuring Effectiveness Of Service Training, Raman Attri
Raman K. Attri
A service company selling and repairing complex hardware is always tightly pressed to reduce the labor hours of its service engineers in the filed to reduce cost of service and to keep the profit margins on contracts high. Such companies relies highly on intensive technical training for such engineers to enable them right field skills, improving their performance and addressing the areas of high cost of service. It is very important for such high capital companies to look into ROI of the training and to frame a metric by which business results can be related with investment on the training …

Education is shifting from the real world classroom to a virtual Internet world where learning can occur at any time and any place. The development web sites and virtual learning environments ultimately fall to programmers who create the code, unfortunately many programmers have not been educated about the necessary steps that need to be taken to ensure the web sites they create are accessible to all learners, even those with disabilities. This project includes a review of literature on web accessibility and a collaborative web based training tutorial designed to educate programmers at the University of California, Irvine about web …
