Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn Oct 1993

Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

While admissions at the undergraduate level are experiencing a surge of students over 30 years of age, the pool of traditionally aged students is declining. These phenomena indicate that older (over age 30) students will also be enrolling in graduate programs in increasing numbers. This paper addresses the issue of retention as it pertains to older female graduate students. Data are examined from a fall 1991 survey and its 1992 followup at a large Midwestern research university. The study evaluated such potential obstacles to female graduation as concern family issues, relationships with faculty and fellow students, difficulty of the coursework, …

Transverse Flutes By London Makers, 1750-1900, In The Collections Of The Shrine To Music Museum, Amy M. Shaw

Amy M. Shaw

In London during the early 19th century, the flute achieved a degree of popularity that some writers have called “flutomania.” The city was home to many instrument makers who created a dazzling array of flutes to meet the demands of the many professional and amateur players. This master's thesis, completed at the University of South Dakota, explores the history of English flutemaking from the mid-18th century to the end of the 19th-century. It includes a catalog of 73 flutes from the collections of the Shrine to Music Museum, which is now the National Music Museum.

Female Doctoral Students: How Age Differentiates Institutional Choice, Retention Enhancement, And Scholarly Accomplishments, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Susan K. Doyle

Linda Serra Hagedorn

This study, conducted at an urban research university, attempted to identify those conditions valuable in recruiting and subsequently retaining older (over 35 years of age) female doctoral students. The study used data from a Spring 1991 survey of all graduate students which solicited information about experiences, accomplishments, and growth attributable to the graduate experience. Seventy-nine percent of female doctoral students participated in the survey. Sample size for statistical tests varied from 257 to 309. The analysis compared the responses of women under 35 to those of women 35 and over in institutional choice, retention enhancement, and professional accomplishments. Findings indicated …

Duty And "Fast Living": The Diary Of Mary Johnson Sprow, Domestic Worker, Elizabeth Clark-Lewis Dec 1992

Duty And "Fast Living": The Diary Of Mary Johnson Sprow, Domestic Worker, Elizabeth Clark-Lewis

Elizabeth Clark-Lewis

In the fall of 1979 my great-aunt Mary Johnson Sprow found a diary she had written while working as a domestic servant more than 60 years before. For more than seven years I had conducted interviews with her, her three other siblings, and their spouses; finally, I would touch the paper on which she so tenderly placed her thoughts as a young live-in servant from rural Virginia. The diary and oral history interviews helped me flesh out the history of young women who migrated to Washington from the rural South before and during the "Great Migration." This research became the …

A New Voice In Roman Elegy: The Poeta Of Propertius 2.1, Randall Colaizzi Dec 1992

A New Voice In Roman Elegy: The Poeta Of Propertius 2.1, Randall Colaizzi

Randall Colaizzi

The introductory elegies of Propertius' first two books reveal quite different speakers: in 1.1 an abject amator whose emotional tortute develops throughout the Monobiblos; but in 2.1 a confident and proud poeta. Book 2 includes several pieces in which Propertius writes less about his involvement with Cynthia after the fashion of Book 1, and more about his involvement with the poetic process, a critical juncture in the history of Roman Elegy. For the speaker of the Monobiblos, poetry merely serves his love; beyond its implicit function as a vehicle for querelae, its utility in winning the …

The Uses Of Binary Thinking, Peter Elbow Dec 1992

The Uses Of Binary Thinking, Peter Elbow

Peter Elbow

When thinkers encounter a contradiction they have traditionally tended to take one of three courses: to try to figure out which side is right; to figure out which side should be seen as hierarchially dominant; or to figure out or how to use a dialectic process synthesize them into a higher concept. In this essay I argue for the value of trying to learn to affirm both sides in all their contrariness.
