Problem Drinking And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating In Female High School Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Edward S. Huydic Nov 1993

Problem Drinking And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating In Female High School Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Edward S. Huydic

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Research on the relationship between problem drinking and disordered eating in adolescent girls has produced conflicting results. This study examines this relationship using a state-of-the-art inventory for measuring eating disorder symptoms and a standardized inventory for detecting problem drinking among adolescents. Two hundred thirty-four female high school students (mean age = 15.5 years) completed the Adolescent Drinking Index and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. Girls diagnosed with a eating disorder were twice as likely to be problem drinkers than girls who were not diagnosed with an eating disorder. Regression analysis and comparisons of problem drinkers and non-problem drinkers point to …

An Exploratory Resource Allocation Model For Implementing Supported Employment Services, Philip S. Hall, John J. Wheeler Nov 1993

An Exploratory Resource Allocation Model For Implementing Supported Employment Services, Philip S. Hall, John J. Wheeler

John J. Wheeler

The purpose of this paper is to provide an exploratory resource allocation model for projecting the resource allocations necessary to implement community-based supported employment services to persons with mental retardation. The model relied on a survey of regional adult service and public school providers to obtain an estimate of the costs and time-lines required for job development. A multi-variate linear regression model was used to project the hours that would be required to develop a job site based on the size of the community, the rate of unemployment, and the percent of service jobs. The extant literature was used as …

Comparison Of Suppression Across Frequencies, Linda M. Thibodeau, Marc A. Fagelson Nov 1993

Comparison Of Suppression Across Frequencies, Linda M. Thibodeau, Marc A. Fagelson

Marc A. Fagelson

Although much research has focused on the temporal, spectral, and intensity relationships between a masker and a suppressor, there has been little attention directed towards relative amounts of suppression in different frequency regions. The purpose of this experiment was to compare the magnitude of suppression at 500 and 2000 Hz in two forward‐masking experiments with seven normal‐hearing persons. In the first experiment, the threshold for a 10‐ms probe was determined as the bandwidth of a 400‐ms masker increased from 0.05 to 1.6 times the probe frequency. Suppression was determined by observing a decrease in threshold when the masker bandwidth exceeded …

Session Duration And The Vi Response Function: With-In Session Prospective And Retrospective Efffects, James Dougan, Alfred Kuh, K. Vink Oct 1993

Session Duration And The Vi Response Function: With-In Session Prospective And Retrospective Efffects, James Dougan, Alfred Kuh, K. Vink

James Dougan

Two experiments examined the effects of session duration on responding during simple variable-interval schedules. In Experiment 1, rats were exposed to a series of simple variable-interval schedules differing in both session duration (10 min or 30 min) and scheduled reinforcement rate (7.5 s,15 s, 30 s, and 480 s). The functions relating response rate to reinforcement rate were predominantly monotonic for the short (10-min) sessions but were predominantly bitonic for the long (30-min) sessions, when data from the entire session were considered. Examination of responding within sessions suggested that differences in the whole-session data were produced by a combination of …

Two-Part Marginal Cost Pricing Equilibria With N Firms: Sufficient Conditions For Existence And Optimality, Aaron S. Edlin, Mario Epelbaum Oct 1993

Two-Part Marginal Cost Pricing Equilibria With N Firms: Sufficient Conditions For Existence And Optimality, Aaron S. Edlin, Mario Epelbaum

Aaron Edlin

We explore the interactions among firms with increasing returns regulated to break even by pricing with two-part tariffs. We provide conditions for existence and for efficiency of general equilibria with n-firms. This involves finding hookup fees that are voluntarily paid and cover the firms' losses from marginal cost pricing-a problem that because of both substitution and income effects is complicated by multiple firms using two-part tariffs, but that must be solved to ensure the continuity of demands necessary to prove break-even equilibria exist.

Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn Oct 1993

Graduate Retention: An Investigation Of Factors Relating To Older Female Graduate Students, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

While admissions at the undergraduate level are experiencing a surge of students over 30 years of age, the pool of traditionally aged students is declining. These phenomena indicate that older (over age 30) students will also be enrolling in graduate programs in increasing numbers. This paper addresses the issue of retention as it pertains to older female graduate students. Data are examined from a fall 1991 survey and its 1992 followup at a large Midwestern research university. The study evaluated such potential obstacles to female graduation as concern family issues, relationships with faculty and fellow students, difficulty of the coursework, …

Faculty Consistency Pay Program, John Fraas Oct 1993

Faculty Consistency Pay Program, John Fraas

John W. Fraas

This paper presents the procedures that were used to identify faculty salary compression, as well as, a discussion of the compensation program that was designed and implemented at a university to reduce the degree of salary compression. An example of the procedure used in the compensation program to determine the amount of money received by each faculty member is provided. The impact of the program on salary compression at the university is analyzed, and the results of a survey of faculty and Dean perceptions of the program are reviewed.

Emergence And Overwintering Brood Of Douglas-Fir Beetle Four Years After The Clover Mist Fire On The Clarks Fork Ranger District, Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, Willis Schaupp, Jr Sep 1993

Emergence And Overwintering Brood Of Douglas-Fir Beetle Four Years After The Clover Mist Fire On The Clarks Fork Ranger District, Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming, Willis Schaupp, Jr

Judith E Pasek

The emergence of adult Douglas-fir beetles (DFB), Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, from their brood trees in 1992 occurred throughout the summer months with a peak in early July, suggesting that there is one annual flight of new adults in this area. A similar density of DFB emerged from trees as overwintered within them, suggesting excellent winter survival. Females comprised 57% of the adults collected. Emergence patterns were similar for both sexes.

Overwintering brood densities of the '92-'93 Douglas-fir beetle generation averaged 29.6 per 36 sq. in. bark sample in November 1992. Brood densities were far higher than 1991 levels. Atypical for …

Multi-Purpose Orchard Shaker/Power Plant, Lloyd Snell Sep 1993

Multi-Purpose Orchard Shaker/Power Plant, Lloyd Snell

Lloyd D Snell

A harvesting machine for nuts and stone fruits including an articulated body with a front part and a back part. A tree shaker head is detachable and couples to the front part of the harvesting machine by a C-frame mount. The articulated body with a low clearance provides necessary maneuverability in an orchard environment, while permitting the harvesting machine with the shaker head detached, to function as a general purpose orchard machine for mowing, spraying, brush clearing and other associated tasks. Specialized machinery for these tasks is no longer necessary.

Myocardial Alpha-Thrombin Receptor Activation Induces Hypertrophy And Increases Atrial Natriuretic Factor Gene Expression, C C. Glembotski, C E. Irons, K A. Krown, S F. Murray, A B. Sprenkle, C A. Sei Sep 1993

Myocardial Alpha-Thrombin Receptor Activation Induces Hypertrophy And Increases Atrial Natriuretic Factor Gene Expression, C C. Glembotski, C E. Irons, K A. Krown, S F. Murray, A B. Sprenkle, C A. Sei

Amy Sprenkle

The protease, a-thrombin (aTh), affects myocardial cell contractility, a feature common among agents that induce hypertrophy. However, it is not known whether cardiac myocytes possess aTh receptors (aTh-R), or if long term treatment with aTh can enhance growth and gene expression. In the present study primary neonatal rat ventricular myocytes expressed a 3.6-kilobase mRNA species that hybridized with a rat aTh-R-specific probe. After 48 h, aTh induced hypertrophy, sarcomeric organization, and enhanced atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) expression, all of which were blocked by the aTh-selective protease inhibitor, D-Phe-Pro-Argchloromethyl ketone. The aTh-R agonist peptide, SFLLRNPND, was a potent activator of ANF …

How Oclc And Member Libraries Are Improving The Online Union Catalog, Karen S. Calhoun, Nancy Campbell, Donna Gehring

Karen S Calhoun

Describes programs for cooperatively managing and improving the quality of the OCLC database with respect to duplicate records, records containing insufficient information, incorrect or variant forms of headings, and coding errors. Includes a description of a large, innovative project using "intelligent software" to correct name and subject headings. OCLC expects at least 5 million heading corrections when the project completes late in 1993.

Federal Jury Instructions And The Consequences Of A Successful Insanity Defense, Joseph P. Liu May 1993

Federal Jury Instructions And The Consequences Of A Successful Insanity Defense, Joseph P. Liu

Joseph P. Liu

This Note argues that trial judges should instruct jurors about the consequences of an insanity verdict, but that judges must strive to minimize the potentially prejudicial impact of such an instruction by explicitly instructing the jury not to consider this information in arriving at a verdict.

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres May 1993

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres

Ian Ayres

Courts sometimes allow contracts to be voidable because of mistakes in their basic assumptions. The common wisdom is that rescission is more likely to be granted if the mistake is mutual rather than unilateral---an incorrect belief common to both parties, not just to one. Rescission for mistake can be justified as a way to avoid inefficient transactions and to reduce the costs of collecting information on whether a mistake has been made. These reasons do not justify a general rule distinguishing between mutual and unilateral mistake.

1. Young Children's Understanding Of Forgetting Over Time., Thomas D. Lyon, John H. Flavell

Thomas D. Lyon

2 studies investigated young children's understanding that as the retention interval increases, so do the chances that one will forget. In Study 1 (24 3-year-olds and 24 4-year-olds), 4-year-olds but not 3-year-olds understood that of 2 characters who simultaneously saw an object, the character who waited longer before attempting to find it would not remember where it was. In study 2 (24 3-year-olds and 24 4-year-olds), 4-year-olds but not 3-year-olds understood that of 2 objects seen by a character, the object that was seen a "long long time ago" would be forgotten and the object seen "a little while ago" …

Cardiorespiratory Responses To Exercise In Acute Spinal Cord Individuals, Sandee L. Melton, Sarah A. Morrison

Sarah Morrison, PT, MBA, MHA

Able-bodied individuals who participate in a routine exercise program show improved fitness levels which can decrease their risk for heart disease. Cardiorespiratory disease is a leading cause of death in the spinal cord injured (SCI) population. A limited number of studies have been performed evaluating the cardiorespiratory responses of exercise for the acute SCI population. The purpose of this study is to evaluate cardiorespiratory response of SCI individuals to an exercise program. Subjects were 35 acute hospitalized SCI individuals with the diagnosis of T10 to T12 paraplegia. All subjects performed a discontinuous, progressive arm ergometer test upon admission and discharge. …
